Good question! So I'll try to provide a good answer.
1st, avoid the chain franchises.
2nd, (in line with above) don't shop by price, shop by talent. Call and see if you feel they know what they're doing.
3rd, avoid salons, try to find a true spa. One will have a much better atmosphere with a lot less drama.

Yelp.com is a great site with public reviews of spas and private massage therapists. Personally, I like the Nob Hill Spa in San Francisco. They offer package deals that include massage, facial. mani/pedi, and lunch.
