The federal law we work under says it best
Taylor vs. Taintor, 83 U.S. 366 (1872)
When bail is given, the principal is regarded as delivered to the custody of his sureties. Their dominion is a continuance of the original imprisonment. Whenever they choose to do so, they may seize him and deliver him up in their discharge; and if that cannot be done at once, they may imprison him until it can be done. They may exercise their rights in person or by agent. They may pursue him into another State; may arrest him on the Sabbath; and if necessary, may break and enter his house for that purpose. The seizure is not made by virtue of new process. None is needed. It is likened to the rearrest by the sheriff of an escaping prisoner.

In a nutshell (trying not to be quite so technical so it's easy to understand)...if you are arrested & put in jail, and if a judge sets a bond on you, then you will be given the option of calling a "bondsman" to get you out.
I'm in South Carolina...the bonding laws vary from state to state, but for the most part it's the same concept.
You call the bondsman, give him your information and someone to contact. Here in S.C. most of us will ask for a "cosigner", so this person (if they agree to sign for your bond) will have to come to our office and fill out paperwork. Once their part of the paperwork is filled out, and once payment is made then the bondsman will go to the jail and post your bond.
In regards to payment...bondsmen here in South Carolina can take up to 15% of the total bond amount as a fee. Most of us take 10% (which means, if your bond is set at $5000 then our fee would be $500). That's how we are paid.
Might seem like a lot of money, but we are taking on the responsibility of making sure that you show up for court. If you do not show up for court, then it's called "jumping bail".
The court will then issue bench warrants and give the bondsman a certain amount of time to arrest you & surrender you back to the court (i.e.- put you back in jail). If we can't find you in the allotted amount of time, then the bondsman and the cosigner are responsible for paying the FULL amount of the bond to the court.
That's how bail bonds & bondsmen work. Hope this explanation helped.

We guarantee the appearance of the defendant in court. If the defendant does not go to court and we can't locate him we have to pay the full bond amount to the court. The 10% premium you pay is our fee to post the bond (different states and courts have different rates).

Once the person has been booked, there are a five possible options for their release..they eitehr get released by
1) Citation - a ticket and a court date
2)Own Recognizance (O.R) - a court date
3)Cash Bail - putting the entire amount of the bail up in cash, this is done usually when the bail amount is low like $500 or $1,000
4)Property Bond - this is done only is certain jurisdictions
or 5)Bail Bond sometimes called a Surety Bond - this is when a bail bondsman is used.
the bail bondsman puts up the bail amount for you and in return charges a premium of 10% or sometimes as low as 8% (certain conditions apply for 8%)
