I hear all the time about women using Castor oil to induce there labour, but what is it normally for and why does it work at the end of the pregnancy?

It causes diarrhea, so it can be taken for constipation. It can also be used for other straining muscles as a compress on the skin. I've used it for gallbladder pain in the past.
As a labor induction technique, it would be affecting the uterus as well as the bowels, so you end up with contractions and diarrhea. It doesn't always work. As with most natural induction techniques, it only works at starting labor when the body is already getting ready for labor. I have also heard that it can cause distress in the baby and meconium staining, which is when the baby passes his/her first bowel movement while still in the womb. It's not typically a bad thing, but if the baby inhales it, a life-threatening pneumonia can follow. It usually happens when the baby is stressed by something.
