FAUX STAINED GLASS ART PROJECT

Leading simulated with black puffy paint

COLORED GLASS SIMULATED WITH WHITE GLUE,

PAINT AND/OR FOOD COLORING

· Coloring book page (photocopied) simple pictures and designs work best.

· Puffy Paint for faux leading or faux leading—squeezable

· Wax Paper

· Masking tape (to tape down edges of coloring book page and wax paper overlay

· White Glue

· Acrylic Paints (various colors) or food coloring (see note*)

· Acrylic paint extender

· Acrylic paint blending medium

· Small Plastic or paper Dixie cups (large enough to hold 1 or 2 oz)

· Damp paper towel (just in case)

· Tooth-pics for spreading mixture

· Wooden popsicle sticks for mixing mixture

· 1/4 teaspoon measuring spoon

Instructions:

Prepare your work surface by selecting your picture of choice (printed out on 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper) tape down all four corners so that paper does not shift.

Take a piece of wax paper (slightly larger than the picture) and tape it down over top of the coloring book page so that it does not shift...carefully place tape so that it does not interfere with the tape holding down the picture. Also make sure the tape does not cover any part of your design as you need to see through the wax paper so that you will know where to place the black puffy paint over top of the black lines that make up the picture.

Now you are ready to trace out the design in black puffy paint ...

Begin at the top of the picture by squeezing out puffy paint or faux leading along the lines of the picture design. Let this paint dry thoroughly before moving onto next step. For best result take time to trace out design making sure your lines are smooth (without bubbles) and maintaining even thickness.

Now that your black faux leading outline is dry...you are ready to lay in the color that will make up your colored stain glass sections.

Begin by pouring out white glue into a Dixie cup 1 oz at a time is usually sufficient for each color. Add in your acrylic paint (color of choice) only enough acrylic paint to tint the glue (keeping in mind that the more paint you add the less transparent your end result will be)

A good ratio is about 1/4 teaspoon to 1 oz of white glue, for darker colors more acrylic paint may be needed to get proper coloring so the you can use a few drops of acrylic extender and blending medium to make the mixture more viscous and slightly more transparent. The more watered down the longer the drying time (I found that a few drops are sufficient) nothing more than an 1/4 to an 1/8 of a teaspoon. Use a wooden popsicle stick to mix the colors and the glue thoroughly. After mixing let paint sit for a moment so that all bubble come to the top (it also helps to tap the cup on the surface of the table) so that the bubbles rise to the top.

Dry time may vary depending upon the thickness and amount of glue. An hour or more is usually required for thorough drying...mixture will turn from opaque colored to clear colored.

Determine what color goes into what area on the picture, use a small spoon ...1/4 teaspoon size to drop a tiny amount into the center of the area you wish to color in then use a toothpick to gently distribute and spread out colored glue mixture all the way up to the inside edges of the black line(s). For added effect you can sprinkle on very fine glitter or shimmer glitter to select areas while paint/glue mixture is still wet...use glitter sparingly (a little goes a long way)

Now your project must dry completely. For extra stability you can use the white glue to cover all over the entire surface, let dry completely and then remove from the wax paper.

Can be mounted onto plexi-glass or clung to a window as a decoration. Enjoy!
