Pre-Employment Physical Examinations

I would like to address management's interest, questions and concerns regarding post-offer (Pre-Employment Testing) evaluations. the physical Examination that we propose and have implemented in multiple states utilize American Medical Association (AMA) compliant computerized testing equipment, with our proprietary software. Our testing results are stellar has we have save companies millions of dollars, in reduced injuries and their associated costs. These examinations are performed on all prospective FINAL new applicants and can be implemented on selected employees when transferring to a job requiring substantially different physical demands.

This objective testing of prospective employees, after they have been offered a position but prior to commencing employment or transferring to a new position, will determine the employees' physical suitability for the position. This examination is crucial in reducing overall injuries by:

 • Finding a physically suited individual for the job,
 • Providing an understanding to the employer and new employee what the employee's physical status is prior to starting employment, and
 • Determining the pre-injury status of the new employee, and establishing a baseline for future comparison, if needed.

Additionally, this will reduce injuries significantly and slowly change your employee culture. The latest data indicates that 50% + injuries are psychosocial in nature. In essence the employee takes advantage of the system to relieve their pain. That pain is emotional, and most cases pre-existing. This data is consistent with information provided by Gallagher Basset as well. Utilizing this type of testing will reduce injures as it has done for scores of our clients.

There are two options that can be considered:

 1. Testing all applicants and comparing them to job descriptions that we submitted will result in a 27-32% failure rate. However, this will result in a 98% decrease in injuries associated with the group we evaluate. This will result in a culture change and healthier work force. This of course reduces workers compensation costs as well as private health care costs. This was the case for Lincoln Plating, Lester Electrical and Gabilan that have not had an injury related to persons that have participated in post-offer testing. In regards to Lincoln Plating, this was the cornerstone program that took them to Forbes Top Safest companies.
 2. Testing all applicants and comparing them to a standardized physical demand level with an inherent failure rate to 2-6% will result in a reduction of injuries of approximately 80-84%. You will still gain psychological capital as described above; however, your injury rate among new hires, which is the most vulnerable group, will be approximately 16%. This information is consistent with a program we instituted for Velocity express, Krieling Building Systems to name a couple.

Regardless of the testing option implemented, this testing would eliminate a significant amount of persons with underlying problems that sincerely cannot functionally perform the specific job tasks required. Additionally, this will provide an objective baseline, establishing pre-injury status on all employees, in case there is an injury. This will significantly reduce fraud and related costs.

Our Company, has already reduced fraud and costs associated with workers' compensation related injuries utilizing this as well as other testing tactics.

For some reason, I feel like this kind of testing could lead to more lawsuits than other types of tests. I understand that there are positions in companies that require a certain physical strength but it could lead to many lawsuits due to gender or age. I'm not even sure if a Professional Employer Organization does that kind of test. It's something to look into, but I don't know if I would rely on that test to choose an applicant. I'd look for previous experience on a resume to hire also.

This testing has been in existence for approximately 20 years and is ADA compliant. In the companies that we have implemented this testing, injuries and costs have been reduced upwards to 84% saving millions. In the states of Florida, Texas, CA and ID we have never lost a case and independent auditor for Liberty mutual concluded that we had a 77% increase in RTW and 100% compliance amount the combined defense and applicant’s physicians. So in conclusion we decrease if not eliminate lawsuits and reduce claims dramatically, along with disability awards and overall costs. We have performed cases in your state years ago, and were very successful. Our industrial Athlete program can be customized to any states laws and regulations increasing a company’ profits dramatically.
