Why Pediatric MRI should not use sedation for everyone

Some facilities insist on using general anesthesia for sedation for their pediatric patients.  Our scanners have new technology called BLADE which creates good images even on moving patients.  So the need for sedation is largely replaced for the need to have this new sequence.  If your facility does not have BLADE then I suggest you go elsewhere.  Pediatric MRI requires a 1.5T or 3T scanner and the use of BLADE when needed.  I have done many MRIs on children without sedation successfully on my 3T Siemens Trio.  This is because the scanner is so fast we can get imaging times dow to 1 minute.  But on the 1.5T WIDE OPEN Espree we have BLADE and we can freeze patient motion.  This has the added benefit that the mother can hold the child while he or she is being scanned.  We want our patients to be comfortable.  Both scanners allow the children to also watch their favorite DVD for some studies.

Would this procedure be right for a 16 month old with a dermoid cyst between her eyelid and her eyebrow?

Well in that age group I like the eyelids to be closed. If the child is asleep the eyelids will be closed. But you do not have to have general anesthesia. In our office we have special screens which can project the childs favorite DVD. Your pediatrician writes a prescription for Chloral hydrate which is a syrup. You give the liquid to the child in the waiting room - you watch the movie and the child falls asleep. we are the only facility to have this for the patients and their children.
If you had a really good child you could just ask them to keep their eyes closed but I think at 16 months that is a hard thing to do. But you wanted to try - we would let you. We are always concerned about patient well being here.
