Cultured marble vanity tops are very common in new home construction and older homes throughout the country. Bathtubs or Shower wall coverings made of cultured marble can also be found. Older bathtubs such as the popular claw footed bathtub are know for high concentrations of lead
in the porcelain. The President of American Lead Consultants said, "We find lead in tubs 50% of the time, when inspecting older homes."

In an April 19, 1995 Good Morning America Broadcast, they stated that bathtubs were America's most unexpected source of lead exposure for children. This is also true to this day. They also reported, as of late 1995, manufactures were continuing to use poisonous substances in the manufacturing of bathtubs.

This is a concern for all of us, as lead exposure can cause serious illness especially in children. The bathtub
refinishing industry has come up with a solution for this health risk, complete encapsulation of the porcelain finish by reglazing the bathtub with a porcelain specific paint.

Lead leaches from the porcelain and is distributed into the water, or is transferred to your hands from cleaning or just touching the older porcelain surface. Exposure is 1000 times the recommended limit for children. Most children are exposed by drinking the water when bathing.

Lead, even in small amounts can effect childhood development. Professional refinishing companies can test your bathtub to determine if you or your children are being exposed to lead. If excessive lead content is found, the bathtub refinishing company can reglaze your bathtub to stop leaching lead.

Once encapsulated, lead exposure will be eliminated as lead cannot leach through the coatings applied by the refinisher.
