In the midst of the fashion issues around gown

selection and accessory plans, the choosing of the

color and kind of flowers, the fun of gift registry,

there are some serious and less exciting aspects to

your wedding that must be handled. Chief among

them is the procurement of the marriage license

itself. As personal and unique and special as your

wedding will be, it is after all, a legal institution recognized

by society and the civil government which

rules it. You can't get married without the "blessing"

of society delivered in the guise of your wedding

license.

We offer you these important reminders.

• Since states and even some counties can have

slightly different rules, call or visit your city hall

to be sure you know all the details of the legal

requirements in your area.

• And don't wait until the last minute to make

this call. Most states require that you have the

license at least 72 hours prior to the wedding.

Keep in mind that marriage licenses can also

have expiration dates. The usual range is from

30- 90 days.

• Know that the couple must apply together and

in person. In some areas all that you may need

is a valid photo ID like your driver's license or

passport. In other areas you may need to

show a birth certificate.

• If you have been married before, you may be

expected to bring proof that your previous

marriage was LEGALLY ended. This can be

done with either a divorce degree or death

certificate.

• Be prepared to pay for the license that day.

Depending on the area of the country, fees can

range from $20 - $100. 􀀀
