How to Measure and Calculate Flooring - Carpet, Ceramic, Vinyl

How to Measure and Calculate for Flooring (Carpet or Hard-Surface)

The Formulas for calculating flooring are simple, but if you don't use them often, they are easy to forget... Here are the formulas for Square Feet and Square Yards (hard-surface products are usually measured in sq/ft (square feet) and soft-surface are usually measured in sq/yds (square-yards))
So Carpet, Linoleum or Vinyl would probably need a sq/yd measurement.
First you need to calculate Sq/Ft (square-feet)- The formula is:
Length X Width = Sq/Ft
So, if you have a room that is 12 ft by 12 ft:
12X12=144 sq/ft
Now that you have calculated Sq/Ft all you have to remember is that there are 9 sq/ft in 1 sq/yd. So, to calculate your square-yardage you simply divide by 9
12X12=144 sq/ft --- 144 sq/ft divided by 9=16 sq/yds (square yards)
The formula looks like this
12X12/9=16 sq/yds
That is the easy part. When you calculate for flooring you must remember 2 things:
1. Always measure to the widest part of the room (including doorways, up to the middle of where the door shuts), and over any steps or rises.
2. Always add 6%(for one room) to 10% (for entire home) for waste factor. Most clients are surprised to learn that they must pay for a percentage of waste, but this is normal for the flooring industry. (I will explain why when I have more time)
Now that you have your room(s) measured. Your formula should be like this:
12x12/9+6%
 Here is the break-down:
12x12=144 sq/ft
144/9=16 sq/yds
16+6%=16.96 Sq/Yds Carpet needed for this room.
(you can round up to 17 Sq/Yds)
---It is always better to have a little Flooring left over, than to come up 6 inches short and not be able to finish the Installation---
Summary:
Sq/Ft = Length X Width
Sq/Yds=Length X Width divided by 9 (9 sq/ft in 1 sq/yd)

I just want to say that I have been looking for how to calculate carpets in sq. yards and the information I found on your web page was perfect, and I truly thank every one who's responsible.

this was somewhat help full except for the fact that most rooms are not 12 by 12, but instead it is the the width of standard carpet. now how do you figure it out if you have a room that is 18'x20' and there is a nook that is 5'x3'

Posted by Karysa on 03:35 PM June 24, 2008

Just take your 2 measurements and figure them seperately:
18x20=360sq/ft divided by9= 40 sq/yds
5x3=15sq/ft divided by 9= 1.66 sq/yds
add them together = 41.66 sq/yds
now add 8% for waste = 44.99 sq/yds total

hope this helps

hello.... nobody caught the fact that 144 sq ft is 16 sq yards, not 12.

so that example would send someone home short almost 4 yards of carpet.

Thank you Blaster for pointing out the error in my result...
Kind of embarassing for someone who's been doing this for over thirty years :(...
guess I was in a hurry... at least the formula is correct LOL

I calculated the amount of carpet to be 33.87 sq/yds the carpet cost $5.00 sq/yd. How do I calculate the cost?

Posted by nicte on 11:32 AM February 18, 2009

33.87 X 5 + sales tax --- Most carpet dealers will round to the nearest third of a sq/yd and calculate thusly:
34 X 5 = $170.00 + (current sales tax 7.75%)
Total = $ 183.17

Hope this helps you,

This still does not cover the Drop and Fill Method that so many insurance companies use to calculate carpet. Is there a reference manual somewhere covering the Drop and Fill Method?????????

I have 29 steps that are 10 1/8" deep and 7.5" tall. The widest couple steps are 42" and the rest taper down from 40.5 down to 30.5. The landings will be tiled. The steps start at 10 up than a landing and than another 4 steps. The other steps are 10 up and than a tiled landing and another 5 steps.
