Photography Book Highlights Hidden Cape Cod

Cape Cod, Massachusetts -- What do Edward Gorey, the Wellfleet drive-in, the Provincetown dune shacks, and a thunderstorm on Cape Cod Bay have in common? They’re all featured in the latest coffee table photography book by Chatham photographer Christopher Seufert. Seufert will release "Cape Cod & Islands Views: A Photo Journal” just in time for the Christmas season on November 29th with a book signing from 2:00 to 4:00PM at the gift shop of Chatham Bars Inn. The 80 page hard-cover book, published through Seufert's company, Mooncusser Films, gives equal treatment to both the hidden corners and well traveled landmarks of all the towns on the Cape, including Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. “I made a concerted effort to avoid what I see as the the Cape's overphotographed landmarks- lighthouses, tourist attractions, overturned boats, and lobster buoys, says Seufert. “That terrain is now extensively covered by the existing body of Cape Cod photo books from every angle.” Most of the shooting for Cape Cod Views took place over the last two years. "The success of the image depended on me being open to what the location offered at a particular place in time, rather than me planning to shoot during the best possible “magic hour” light. It required me to see the Cape in a more spontaneous way, as if for the first time." “I wasn’t sent out to locations by a publisher. I shot the book over the normal course of my work day, freelancing on the film, photo, and audio projects all over the Cape,” says Seufert. Cape photo books, he feels suffer from two weaknesses- the photographer comes from off-Cape to shoot all the most prominent landmarks over a two week period, making the book a one-dimensional snapshot, or the photographer covers only part of the Cape, focusing geographically wherever he or she happens to live. “I’m proud that this book is truly a Cape Cod book featuring just about every town on the Cape. I’ve already published two books of Chatham photos so I didn’t feel much need to include more Chatham images than any other town.” While the main project is a traditional hard-cover coffee table book, Seufert, a documentary filmmaker by trade, brought his film and video background to play with a full complement of multimedia components, including a DVD slide show (with 50 additional images) included with the book and available separately, a free cross-platform screensaver (available as a download at his www.CapeCodPhoto.net). "Though I love holding a real book in my hands, photos are no longer something that live only on the printed page. I'm hoping to evolve the Cape Cod photo book one step. The dvd actually has 130 photos, so it's a great option for those with an interest in artwork for their widescreen tv's in addition to their coffee tables." Mr. Seufert currently has most recently had his photos published by the Weather Channel, the Massachusetts Getaway Guide, Boston Magazine, National Public Radio, and he recently won the Kodak Photo Challenge for his image of a golf ball on Chatham’s Ridgevale Beach. His signing at the Chatham Bars Inn Gift shop on November 29 from 2:00 to 4:00pm will feature a free raffle of a framed print from the book. The book is now available online at http://www.ChathamPhoto.com. ### For more information please contact: Christopher Seufert Chris@CapeCodPhoto.net / http://www.CapeCodPhoto.net 508-430-2866
