I have decided to compose this article to hopefully give some bride-to-be’s a heads-up about what to expect when shopping for a wedding gown online and what are the most important things to remember.  Here are some major tips and precautions before you consider looking for a wedding gown online:

• Choose an online bridal store that's based in your own country.
  I’m certainly not discriminative about foreign-based online bridal stores.  Yes, they do sell very cheap gowns with “too-good-to-be-true” prices, but some brides would like to gamble and take risks.  If your personality falls into this category, nothing is stopping you, but you are not covered under the same laws in your own country if you transact with online bridal stores based outside of the .  If something goes wrong, you have nowhere else to file a complaint to.  After you send your payment, you’ll never know if you’ll get the dress on time, get the right dress you were hoping for, or even worse…if your financial information will be safe with them or not.  Choose a store where you can speak to a real person or even the owner/manager right away who can attend to your issues.

• Choose an online bridal gown store that is HONEST.
  ONLY trust online bridal gown stores that sell original designs and show the exact dress that you will get.  Buying a wedding dress online is already hard due to the fact that you can’t see nor feel the dress before committing to buy it, and it’s even worse when the online store will try to blind you with beautiful pictures, but you will get a different dress instead—an inferior imitation of the designer gown that you originally wanted.  If the online store says that they’re selling “copies” or “replicas”, choose the ones that actually create and show their own version of the gown you’re looking for, instead of telling you—“your dress will look similar to the one in the picture…”.  How sure are you that your dress will be similar?  You will never know their imitation version unless you see it yourself.

• Demand for a Certificate of Authenticity if the bridal gown online store claims to sell the original products.
  Unless if the store/s has/have a physical bridal store, beware of some online bridal gown stores who claim to sell the original designer dresses.  Here’s the best thing you can do to protect yourself from being scammed:  Request for a Certificate of Authenticity for one of the gowns that you are interested in.  Designers issue this Certificate to their entire authorized retailers.  If they do give you a certificate but you question the authenticity, here is a link to all the websites of the popular designers and how you can reach them.  (CLICK HERE for the list of designers).  Read through the “FAQ” section…that’s where you’ll know that that they do not suggest purchasing their gowns online.  You can search for the name of the online store on the designer’s database/store locator, or you can even report them to the designer.  So…why care for the Certificate of Authenticity?  It’s not only a fraudulent act to misrepresent their products to be authentic designer gowns, if they happen to even present a fake certificate, that’s against the law.  The last thing you want is to get involved in a potential law suit after you get married.  The next number is related to this item.
  
  
• Watch out for too-good-to-be-true deals—they’re rip offs!
  In relation to item #3, some of these stores would use the reason—“We sell our designer gowns at super discounted rates because we don’t have a physical store to maintain, we pass on the savings to our customers…”  Yes, it’s true that it’s easier and more cost-effective to maintain an online store than a physical store, but that does not explain how the price of the original gown has been slashed to only a fraction of its cost.  If you’re looking at the original picture of a $4,000 designer gown, then see how the price has dramatically been slashed to $1,200.00 or even less—IT’S A RIP OFF!  Even if you know you are getting a designer replica gown, it’s still a rip off.  Why?  Here’s an explanation:  Every designer has their own manufacturer to produce their gowns for them.  They control the quality of both the materials and workmanship of each gown.  This is just one of the many reasons why many designer gowns are just ridiculously expensive.  Once the “AUTHENTIC LABEL” is attached to the dress, it raises the price even more.  The more popular the designer is, the more expensive the gown is too.  You will get ripped off when that replica gown really costs ONLY $400 but was sold for $800 because the original designer gown costs $4,000.  It’s not fair to you, nor is it fair to the original designer who has put her heart and soul in designing that gown to be able to earn the reputation.  Then, here comes the scammers who just want to use the designers’ names and photos so they can get more money for what their gowns are really worth—SO BEWARE because you’re paying more money for what the gowns are really worth.
  
  
• Check for the online store’s Return Policy.
  It’s hard to find a store who offer returns for their bridal gowns (both physical stores and online).  Bridal gowns are usually made-to-order.  Even when you walk in a bridal shop, you will try on a sample dress, but you when you order that dress, it will be ordered directly from the designer/manufacturer of the dress.  So, the dress will be made from scratch.  That is why it is almost impossible to return the dress once it is finished…or even cancel it once the order has been made.  However, look for stores that actually offer something or have some type of Return Policy.  It is rare to find a store that offers one, but when they do offer, you have an advantage on your side.  Remember, once you return the gown, even if the store can sell the gown again, its value will not be the same, so the store will lose money.  Therefore, stores who are usually willing to offer a Return Policy for their bridal gowns are stores who truly value their customers to be able to make this sacrifice.
