What is an umbrella insurance policy?

An umbrella policy is a separate excess liability policy that covers losses that exceed the liability limits on your regular auto, home and/or business insurance policy. For instance, if the limits on your car insurance are $250,000/$500,000 an umbrella policy would extend those limits to $1 million or even as high as $10 million.

Umbrella policies are inexpensive and usually cost anywhere between $200 and $500 annually, depending on the driver, car, etc.
