California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner announced today that insurance companies will be allowed to offer "pay-as-you-drive" car insurance as soon as Fall 2009. "Pay-as-you-drive" or "insurance by the mile" can save consumers money by linking their premiums more closely to the number of miles they actually drive.

Consumers will be able to pre-pay their insurance for a specific number of miles with the option to purchase more miles if they run out. Miles driven will be verified by odometer readings carried out by insurance agents, auto repair shops, smog check stations or through devices placed in the insured vehicle.

California will be one of only a handful of states to allow pay-as-you-drive insurance, and Fairway Insurance will be among the first agencies to make it available to our clients.
