Yes! This most recent style of hearing aid is referred to as an open-fit or open-canal hearing aid. One primary advantage is that it does not occlude or “plug up” your ear. This is important for many reasons. Many people still have normal hearing for certain sounds but do have some hearing loss for others. In this situation the goal is to amplify only those sounds where there is hearing loss but not to interfere in any way with the natural hearing of the patient. This can now be accomplished with the open fit instruments. In addition there are some people who will not tolerate or adapt well to the “stuffy” sensation of having a “plug” in the ear. These folks now have the option of an open-fit instrument. Most of my patients tell me that they don’t feel like they have anything in their ears when using this type of hearing aid. And that, of course, is the point. It is also helpful that this style of device is very small and inconspicuous. Not every person with a hearing loss is a candidate for this technology. Schedule an appointment to find out if this is appropriate for you.
