GOOD DOG!  recently accompanied PETCAREAVAN http://www.petcareavan.com on their maiden venture to the Miami area.  We were impressed by the turnout.  People in South Florida love their dogs!

As dog trainers; we were stunned by the number of people attending the clinics who had their dogs on retractable leashes.  The irony was, many were complaining that their dog is always out of control.  Well it's no wonder!  It's like walking your dog with a fishing reel. 

Retractable leashes are a dog's dream leash...because the owner has no control.  Even the dumbest dog quickly learns, the more they pull, the faster the owner "lets out more line."   Great!  Now the dog has ALL the control!

On a more serious note, retractable leashes are one of the leading causes of U.S. hospital treated injuries from "doggie" related accidents....over 16,000 in 2007 alone! 

Retractable leash injuries treated and reported include burns (from the cord), bites (trying to untangle dogs) cuts, eye injuries, and amputations.  That's right, amputations!  Talk to a dog owner that has fed a finger to a retractable leash.  Bet they are now using a quality made 6 foot leather leash these days. 

16,000 is just the human count.  Every day, vets treat countless dogs injured by leashes...most commonly retractable leashes.  Most injuries are the same as human injuries, they also include strangulation.

Before considering using a retractable leash, read the warning labels on the box, and on the handle of the leash.  You may reconsider your decision.
