    White Grubs

There are many species of beetles in this area that lay eggs and those babies are called white grubs.  I see May beetles, June bugs and Japanese beetles.  The adult beetles feed on the leaves of rose bushes, purple plumbs, birch trees and many fruit trees.  Grubs do a lot of damage to the lawn by feeding on the roots of the lawn, when the roots are gone the lawn starts to die.  Since grubs live in the soil where the food is at many homeowners don't see them unless they are digging or planting things in their landscape.  The grubs usually go unnoticed until the damage appears and then it is usually too late.  The damage starts off as irregular shapes of dead or tan areas in the lawn.  It is turning tan because with no roots the lawn can not take up water out of the soil.  Another problem is raccoons and skunks come out at night to look for grubs, they will dig up the lawn and pick the grubs out one by one.  Sometimes the animals do more damage than the grubs do.
One way to prevent the damage is to have a healthy lawn and root system so that if you get grubs they will have to eat a lot of the roots to damage the lawn.  Another way to prevent damage is to apply a once per year insect control.  It will stay in the soil for the rest of the year and protect the lawn from grub damage.  If you are looking for a non-chemical way of taking care of grubs I recommend using cedar oil as a preventer.  The beetles and many other insects dislike the smell of cedar oil and if it is sprayed around your home, on your patio, fence, trees, mulch or anywhere else on your property the beetles will go somewhere else where they don't smell the cedar oil.  If you keep the beetles away there will be less eggs laid on your property.  If the do get laid there and strart to damage your lawn you can use a chemical or drench the soil with cedar oil to kill the grubs.  For more info on grubs and their damage please look at www.helpugogreen.com
