Origins

Welcome to Hina Adventures. We started our tour company in 2006, and so far the experience has been more than we could have hoped for. Ena and I worked together at another eco tour company, and when some major restructuring went on there, we decided to go off on our own.

Our focus has always been to give guests a true picture of Hawai'i, not some commercial fantasy image created by the tourism industry. We felt that we could do a much better job of that if we were running things.

We named the company Hina Adventures, after the goddess Hina. She is commonly known today as the goddess of the moon, but she also appears in many forms throughout nature - plants, fish, coral, etc. Since our focus is on all things natural, we felt honoring her was most appropriate.

With Hina Adventures, we've created something that we are extremely proud of. As yet, we've been able to stand our ground and not give in to what every other tour company feels are necessary tactics to survive. We didn't want to enter the rat race, and so far we've been able to manage quite fine out here on our own.

Aside from providing quality tour experiences for tourists, we also focus on locals. It occurred to us recently that most locals don't know the intimacies of this island, which is something that, as locals, they shoud know. So we pursue every opportunity that comes our way that will help us educate Hawai'i's own people as well as visitors.

Why, then, do we still focus on visitors? Well, on any given day there are more visitors on this island than there are Hawaiians. Isn't that sad? Visitors unknowingly contribute more to island pollution and degredation on a daily basis than locals do. Visitors are also the ones who are innocently contributing to the perpetuation of the "commercial Hawai'i" stereotype, a stereotype that we, as Hawaiians, want to abolish. We want our visitors to understand the rich history of Hawai'i, and how much their actions while here affects our island home. It is our hope that our guests leave Hawai'i knowing that this was once a sovereign nation full of highly skilled, extremely intelligent people. We want our guests to know that these people are still here, and that we still have a lot to be proud of.

So if we can help you plan your Hawai'i vacation, or we can help your local group plan an outdoor cultural experience, please call us! We'd love to share our island with you...

I've looked EVERYWHERE for the name of the fern in the top, right corner of your language page. I would LOVE to buy one, but I my searches have not come up with anything. Do you know the name of that plant and/or have a nursery I could buy some? Thanks for any help you may have. And -- I absolutely LOVE your website, especially the Hawaiian language page. Thanks for keeping the language alive!!! Mahalo!
