    EAR-PIERCING AFTER-CARE & ADVICE

AFTER-PIERCING CARE  &  ADVICE           EAR CARE PROCEDURES

***Scroll down to the end to ask a question - click the word comments, then scroll down to the bottom... You have to type in the code word twice! Then make sure yours got posted! ***

Though post- ear piercing complications are very rare when using our high quality, pre-sterilized Studex studs as directed, statistics show that the greatest percentage of all post- ear piercing complications are caused through negligent after-care procedures performed by the customer.  In order to promote a trouble-free healing process, all customers receiving an ear piercing with Studex studs should observe the following after-care advice:

~Wash hands and finger-tips thoroughly before touching studs or ears. (Purell works well, too.)
~Dip new Q-tip in Isopropyl rubbing alcohol
(91% is best) and apply between the earring and your ear in front and in back. Rotate studs 2 or 3 times, twisting them right and left, 1/2 turns only (to avoid wrapping hair around the posts). You can also apply Neosporin CREAM or our MediSept Ear Care Solution.
Do this at least once a day.

~In between cleansing, keep ears DRY. After shampooing, make sure to rinse your ears well. Apply alcohol or Ear Care Solution and gently blow-dry or fan your ears.
~Keep hairspray and hair gel (& Cell Phones) away from the ear - they attract undesirable dirt and bacteria.
~Leave studs in ears for 6 weeks continuously. (12 weeks for cartilage)  After 6 (or 12) weeks  the piercing studs can be removed, and other post-type earrings may be worn continuously.  Remember to sterilize any new earrings with alcohol before insertion. (Also clean the ones you take out.)
~Use only post style earrings for the first 4 months after piercing
(12 months for cartilage).  The post should be surgical stainless steel or other hypo-allergenic material, such as 14K or 18K solid gold - no costume.  Sterling silver is OK after 6 months, but that sometimes annoys the ear. Lightweight hoops or dangles are OK after 3 months.  Keep some earrings in most of the time, for at least a year.
~Avoid swimming pools the first few days (chlorine).
~Minor pain/redness may occur immediately - this is normal. This should settle within 24 to 48 hours provided proper after-care procedure is carried out.  If undue pain/swelling/redness occurs at any time, seek medical advice immediately, before removing the ear-piercing stud.

*** After the 6 weeks, re-apply alcohol and/or Neosporin every month, and also whenever you feel sensitivity in your ear piercing.  Check behind your ear to make sure the backing is not too tight! You should be able to twist the earring freely.  Sometimes kidney wire, hoops or leverbacks leave more "room to breathe."
Best to remove and clean your earrings every month or so if you like leaving them in all the time.

    • Tip: If you don't have alcohol handy, use warm salt-water or Hand Sanitizer.
    • Clean the ends of your eyeglasses - they carry germs, too.

      DO NOT:

~Remove the studs before 6 weeks, or handle your ears unnecessarily or with dirty hands.
~Push the earring backs too tight into your ear. The backings must be positioned in the groove at the tip of the post. Feel the earring back when you cleanse your ear - it should feel even with the post.

    EAR CARTILAGE:
Due to the nature of ear cartilage, extra care should be observed during the healing period.  Minor pain/redness may occur immediately - this is normal.  This should settle within 48 hours provided proper after-care routine is carried out. If undue pain/swelling/redness occurs at any time, seek medical advice immediately, before removing the ear-piercing stud.  Failure to properly follow after-care procedure or to seek medical advice or attention should a problem occur, may result in scarring to the ear cartilage.

After 6 weeks, you may choose to remove the training earrings yourself, or return to your professional ear piercer, so that we can clean, inspect and approve you for new earrings!

My favorite age to start ear piercing is around age 7. We will do 1-year-olds and above, but for babies we need a parent and a helper. Bring her something to drink or a pacifier, and a toy.

After the first six weeks, does wearing the studs continuously include nightime as well?

Comment by Mida Gosselin on 08:20 AM December 22, 2008

It's best to keep any earrings in the ears. Some people heal so fast in general, especially children, so that the holes can close up after even one day!
I wouldn't take a chance, as re-piercing isn't that easy to do in the exact spot.
Keep something in there day & night. If the earrings are not comfortable to sleep in, push a thin piece of sewing thread thru the hole with an earring post & tie the knot. Always use alcohol before pushing anything new into an earring hole.
    Happy Holidays, ~Janet

after 6 months how long do we continuously need earrings in? Also after 6 months can you sleep in hoops?

Posted by maggie on 03:44 PM January 01, 2009

After 6 months you can take the earrings out for a few days, but put earrings in periodically (once a week) so the holes stay open. You can definitely wear hoops or lever-backs or fish-hooks after 6 months. Best to keep it not too heavy, say under 8 grams.

Comment by Janet Rothstein on 07:09 PM January 01, 2009

thanks that helped! Also I have another question...After the original 6 weeks of wearing earings I was told I can wear hoops if they have a straight post! Is this true? And also would it be ok if I had to take out my earings for a couple hours few times a week about 8 weeks after the piercing. I play sports and it will most likely be neccessary to remove them for the events!

Posted by maggie on 05:32 PM January 04, 2009

Yes, hoops with straight posts are perfectly fine.
A week before you need to remove the earrings for sports, start doing the nightly alcohol earring-twisting routine again. See if it feels smooth & moving freely when you twist the earrings. If so, you will be ready by then. If not, you may need more time. Either way, at 7 weeks remove each earring for just a minute & thoroughly rub them clean with alcohol & a tissue or your fingers, and put them back in. (Make sure there are no tissue fibers left on.) A thorough cleaning every week or 2 is best to prevent bacteria & keep the holes open. Good luck in your events!

My 4 year old daughter has had her ears pierced for a little over a year. I have noticed that one piercing is lower than the other one. When she wears certain earrings it is a lot more noticeable. I was thinking I could take the earring out of the "bad" ear and let it heal and than have it repierced. If I did this, how long would it take to heal to the point where it can be repierced?

Posted by Jennifer on 12:06 PM March 09, 2009

That's a great idea. Before you remove the "bad" earring: put some alcohol into the hole to clean it out by twisting the earring and also pushing it back & forth. Then remove the earring, & wipe the front and back of the ear. It could take a few weeks or it could take months to close. An ear piercing person with good aim could make a hole in the new spot, without waiting for the old hole to be completely closed.
I hope this helps you, Janet

    Hi
I had my ear lobes pierced 8 weeks ago, and they're still swollen! There's no puss or anything, I clean then with salt solution and i've been to the doctors twice already about it, but they just send me away lol. I changed the earrings from the posts to small sleeper hoops after the 3rd week as the first earrings were really digging into my ears. Any ideas?

Posted by Janelle on 08:17 AM March 17, 2009

    Hi Janelle,
What type of metal (ex: gold, surgical steel) are your earrings made of? You may be allergic to specific metals.
Have you taken them out to clean your holes with 99% rubbing alcohol? Try NeoSporin cream after that.
Call me at my store if you'd like; I'd be happy to to discuss this more in detail.

Comment by Janet Rothstein on 02:18 AM March 18, 2009

    Hi
I have 9crt gold hoops at the moment (the studs we 14crt). I think maybe i'm allergic to the metal, as the swelling went down a few days ago, then when I put some gold earrings into my other holes they seemed to swell back up again...
I'm not sure if it's related, but I had my ears pierced a year or so ago but they were wonky so I let them close. The new piercings are really close to the old scars, and they seem to have raised up and gone like red bumps at the front and back on my ears...
I've been putting some antiseptic cream on them, so hopefully they should start to settle back down again...
    Thanks,
    Janelle

Posted by Janelle on 10:54 AM March 19, 2009

Try 14 kt. or 18 kt. gold... If your hoops are only 9 kt., it means they have more alloy metal than pure gold in them. The alloy could have nickel, which causes reactions in some people. Keep up with the antiseptic cream.
    Good luck, ~Janet

My 4 yr old daughter recently got her ears pierced. They healed fine, then when we switched them out we started having problems. They became infected and we've been caring for them and I thought they were getting better. Tonight when I cleaned them she had this bump next to the hole. I cleaned it with a q-tip and just the pressure from that make it explode! Lots puss came out and it bleed real bad. Once I got the bleeding under control I noticed that she has this small lump of tissue bulding out of that spot (not the earing hole). I finished cleaning it with the ear care solution and put some neosporin. Not sure what it is, or what to do? we have 14 k earings in her ear now.

Posted by Mary on 06:03 PM March 24, 2009

Hi Mary, It could be an abscess, caused by infection. I would call your child's doctor. It may be something more serious than the normal problem, especially if it's next to the hole. The doctor may have to get inside the lump to clean it out better.
After that get's fixed, she should be fine. Just make sure any earring that goes into her ear is sterilized with 99% alcohol. Also use that on her ears and on both your hands. Neosporin is good, too. ~Janet

Please help...my 6 year old daughter had her ears piecred in july'08 and I have kept in the original studs they used. I have tried on a couple of occations in dec and then in Jan'09 to put new studs in and they are fine but her ears seem to start to heal around the smaller new earrings within a day and when I go to put her original studs back in I struggle to get them back. Her piecrings seem to keep healing still after 9 months.....what should I do ? Do I keep the original piercing studs in ( which are slightly thicker posts) ? Also her school is now saying that she must take out her earrings for PE ...but I am scared that they will start to heal while she is at school..please help ..thanks

Posted by Mrs Jennie Childerley on 03:59 PM April 03, 2009

Dear Mrs. C, You probably need to do the alcohol-twisting more often, even with the new studs. Sometimes dust and dirt gets in the ear and makes it want to close up. If you have Ear Care Gel, or Neosporin Creme, put that on the studs and push them into her ear. (Try the piercing studs first, if they will go thru.)
Each night, do the alcohol "twist" (and creme) to keep the earring moving inside the hole, and to keep it from closing.
If she has to take out her earrings for P.E. class, give her a silk pouch or little baggie to keep her earrings in (so she won't lose them), Just For That Class Period! It is a routine she should get used to.... they won't close up in an hour. Best to keep a pair of studs (not costume jewelry, though) in her ears at all times except the PE class, and keep them clean.
    Please keep me posted, ~Janet

thank you for getting back to me...........shall i try yo keep the piercing studs in as much as possible (they are slightly thicker) ? When she did wear normal gold studs which have thinner posts they were alright until i tried to post the piercing studs back in..the hole had closed up smaller so we really struggled to get the piercing studs back in. I have now left the pirecing studs in and have not taken them out since. I am scared to change them etc incase they do close up even though my daughter wants to wear new ones . What do u think is best ..do i leave the piercing ones in for longer or is it safe to use smaller new studs ? How long will this all go on for ..her ears wanting to close up as it is already coming up to a year .? thanks so much xx

Posted by Jennie on 01:07 PM April 07, 2009

Hi. The natural tendency is for her earring holes to close down a little. After the piercing studs have been in for 6 weeks the 2nd time (with routine alcohol twisting), they can come out. Then sterilize (alcohol) and put in the thinner earring studs, and try to keep them in as much as possible. You don't have to put the piecing ones in anymore after that . Her ear will be fine for most posts and endless hoops, which are thinner... just keep something in there (except for P.E.)
    Good luck, ~Janet

Hi, Janet. I've had my piercings for over 7 weeks now. I got pierced with the beginners/starters studs. When I was playing tennis I accidentally touched my left ear and as a result it got infected like crazy. It was swollen to the max, and was red. I didn't take my earrings out though; instead I kept treating them with hot salt water (what my piercer said to do). Anyways, it's been 7 weeks now but my left ear, which got better, is kind of still swollen. It's not a hard swell (soft like normal) but it's just thicker than my right ear. So, my studs make a mark because it's been pressing on my ear because of my lobe being thicker than normal. Also, puss still comes out of my left ear, it's greenish/yellow and usually comes out when I twist my studs (after washing hands thoroughly). My right studs, when I twist it, sometimes isn't that smooth and results in bleeding, but the blood is thick, like it's mixed with puss. What should I do?
    Thanks.

Dear Rocky, You could have an abscess due to infection. I would go see a doctor to clean it out. People, you must keep your piercings clean, and keep your fingers clean! Salt water is not as effective as 99% rubbing alcohol. Let me know what the doctor says, ~Janet

Dear Lisa, If there is no pain, you probably don't have an abscess. Clean your studs and your ears with the alcohol. The little lump may go away. But you should still call your doctor to see what he says about the liquid. ~Janet

Wat should I do to stop the pain? Oh and also my ears are a little swollen also.

Posted by massiel on 09:33 AM April 16, 2009

Hi Massiel, What type of earring did they use? You could be allergic to some alloy in the earring. The best type is surgical steel with 24k pure gold on top, like our Studex studs. For the pain, first try to get "Neosporin cream with pain relief" into your ear hole, pushing the earring back and forth. If the pain is still bad the next day, you should probably take out the earring and get a Dermatologist to clean it out. Wait a few weeks for it to close up, and try another piercing near that hole, with better earrings. Then you MUST follow the alcohol / Neosporin routine each nite. Keep me posted, ~Janet

Hi, I got my ears pierced two months ago. And recently, my ear had started to bleed and with tiny bit of pus and it was from the ear piercing so my mother advised me to take the piercing out and clean my earlobe with alcohol on a piece of cotton and put antiseptic cream on it everyday. Will my earhole close? Because I'm really scared that it will close. And the first time it started bleeding I cleaned it then tried to put my piercing back in and it really hurt and started to bleed again. The other ear is fine. What should I do? I don't really want to put my piercing in again because I'm scared that it will hurt alot and get infected.

Posted by Carina on 05:18 AM April 19, 2009

Hi Carina, Yes, your earhole may close! After you clean with alcohol and the cream, try to put a stud earring in that is made of 14 kt. or 18 kt. yellow gold, and has a THINNER POST. (Use alcohol and cream on the earrings first.) Your piercing earring is thicker, so it may hurt. Make sure you clean with alcohol and the cream everyday. Rotate the earring also. If this doesn't help, a doctor will have to clean it out, it will close, then you can get it re-pierced later.

Comment by Janet on 10:09 AM April 21, 2009

Hello, I have reinserted my earring and it doesn't hurt at all. I rotated the earring and doesn't really hurt anymore. Thanks loads. But what if I want to put an earring of a thicker post in?

Posted by Carina on 03:08 AM April 22, 2009

Hi Carina, I would wait a month (4 to 5 weeks) before you put the thicker post in. That way your ear will be perfectly ready for it. (Be patient!) Keep up with your cleaning routine to keep the bacteria away for at least 3 weeks for safety.
Pretty soon you will be able to wear studs, hoops, and dangle earrings! ~Janet

My 5-year-old daughter got her ears pierced a week ago. Her soccer coach is now saying that she has to remove the earrings to play and that we cannot tape them for the games. I am concerned because I don't want the holes to close up. The coach suggested that I take them out for the 45 minute game and then reinsert them. It was also suggested that I can buy 'retainers' to insert for the games. Do you have any suggestions for me? Thanks.

Posted by Breen on 04:20 PM April 29, 2009

Hi Breen, If you can buy sterile 'retainers' that would be best. Children's earrings close up so fast, that after just one week, even 45 minutes is a risk.
Some people have used fishing line. It's strong enough to push thru, and you can tie it into a circle & knot it. And it hardly shows.

Comment by Janet Rothstein on 06:13 PM May 01, 2009

I had my ears pierced as a teen but one was slanted and I let them close because it just looked odd, I never wanted to get them pierced again for fear it wouldn't look right well I an 28 now so I felt like doing it mid march and now its may and both ears have a small knot but the left hurts when I change out the ear ring and its bleeds for a moment too, the right feel a bit sore and bleeds less, I'm sure my stud ear rings are sterling silver, and once they are in its fine no bleeding or pain, I don't know its I am allergic or it they just aren't healed or if I need to take them out. Like now I have hoop ear rings in and they feel fine but every now and again the left side feels discomfort like not really pain but discomfort and its only last for a few secs, it kind of feels like I am trying to stick the stud thru a ball of mass trying to find the whole on the other side and that hurts. Can some one please help?

Posted by Daysha on 07:53 AM May 03, 2009

Hi Daysha, It sounds like you have some infection. You are probably also sensitive to Silver. You need to really clean out your ear holes and start over with the piercing studs -only if they are hypo-allergenic surgical steel. Or, you can try some solid gold earrings. I always suggest using only those metals, and wearing straight posts or very light hoops in the beginning. Please clean with at least 91% rubbing alcohol, and Neosporin creme is great. (Every day for at least 3 weeks). Keep me posted, Janet

I have the same problem as Massiel. I got a 2nd lobe piercing on Friday. When I went to bed on last night, the right one was sore, and when I woke up this morning, it was pretty swollen. There's no blood or pus, just lots of pain and embarrassment (my mom didn't want me to get this piercing). She actually suggested Neosporin with a hot compress, but I was a little worried and went to Claire's where I got it done in the first place, and they told me I was probably allergic to the titanium. Since they've only been pierced for a week, are they going to close up immediately if I want to change the studs to 14K gold? And is there any way to numb the pain?

Posted by Mimi on 10:05 AM June 03, 2009

Dear AG, 6 weeks is recommended so that the hole is kept open and clean. The earring twisting/spinning process does this, and if you take out the training post stud early, your hole may close down to a smaller hole-size. You MUST keep an earring in at all times until at least 6 weeks, even if it's the new diamond earrings. You sound like a responsible person, so keep your new earrings sterile, too! Good luck! ~Janet

Comment by Janet Rothstein on 10:26 AM June 05, 2009

Dear Mimi, I keep telling people to use the hypoallergenic surgical steel earrings for piercing! You may be allergic to titanium, but one week is too early to put in Non-Training earrings. If you have thick - post 14 kt. gold stud earrings (clean & sterilize them first), you can try to take out the Titanium & QUICKLY put the gold ones in. Clean with alcohol and Neosporin EVERY DAY, by twisting the earrings after dripping the liquids into your ear holes. The Neosporin creme has pain relief in it. Don't change again for 6 more weeks.
    Good luck! Let me know,~Janet

hey, i got my ears peirced about four weeks ago and i've been doing everything im soppused to with cleaning them. A couple days ago i took the studs out and changed them with a pair of my our earings...and now my parents are telling me that they will close up because the earings i have in are smaller than then the studs they used to pierce my ears. Is this true? Should i put the studs back in?

Posted by Christina on 05:27 PM July 06, 2009

Hi Christina, The recommended time for "training" is 6 weeks. That is so that the hole will stay open enough by twisting the perfectly round and larger training posts. They won't really close up after switching to your own earrings, but the hole may get too small to put in larger posts later on. If you can just be patient for 2 more weeks, put the piercing studs back in and keep up the cleaning routine. You will be happier in the long run. Best regards, ~Janet

Comment by Janet Rothstein on 08:02 AM July 07, 2009

The swelling went down after a few weeks of dropping hydrogen peroxide into the holes to clear out the infection (which I got fussed at for) and then switching to isopropyl alcohol. The studs I changed into on June 3rd were 14k gold training posts - the girl who did it was very clean about it. My right ear had been the problem ear for the longest time, but today when I changed the studs for the first time, the left ear was the problem. It started to bleed when I put the new one in, and tonight when I took them out to clean my ears and put the original studs back in, it started to bleed and ooze a little bit of pus. To me, this means infection and judging from your previous posts, I should probably get this checked out by a doctor. The only problem is, I've been through so much trouble with this piercing already, letting them close would just break my heart. Is it logical to continue with the alcohol/neosporin routine and hope for the best?

    Mimi

Posted by Mimi on 12:18 AM July 12, 2009

Hi Mimi, I'm sorry I was out of town and couldn't reply to you sooner. Yes! You can keep doing the isopropyl alcohol and Neosporin, and twisting the earring back & forth inside. Twice a day will help clean out the infection faster. The bleeding is sometimes from pushing the larger diameter training posts thru the hole as it narrows.
Sometimes 6 weeks is not enough time to finish the training the ear piercing. Sometimes people are sensitive to 14 kt. gold ~ which contains only 58.5% pure gold, and the rest other elements such as copper, zinc and silver and sometimes nickel.)
Keep trying.... Please keep me posted. ~Janet

Hi Krithika, Your ears could definitely be aggravated to make a small bump. I have seen people with little bumps that have gone away. You must now continue to keep your holes clean (and clean your hands first) with the Alcohol and Neosporin if you have it, for 3 more weeks. Also, today remove the earrings, clean them, and put them back in quickly! Don't worry too much about it. Ask a doctor to look at it as well. Write me back, ~Janet

Hi Janet! I had my ears pierced more than 7 months ago. I cleaned the earring for the 7months with the after care solutions and alcohol. But my ear piercings seem to be getting infected all the time. Since last month my earpiercing was swollen a lot, bleeding, lots and lots of pus. I actually couldn't sleep with the pus dripping down... i went back to the piercer and she changed my earrings to long post 14k gold. She told me to remove them 2 weeks after and wear light hoops to let the piercing breathe. How can i drain the pus and get rid of this infection?? D: im rlly worried that this will become worse =( please help! D:

Hi Angela, Your ears may be very sensitive to either the solution or the earring metal she used. It seems to be more serious than usual! I think you should see a doctor for the infection, and ask if you should let the holes close up and start over with a new piercing, or if you should keep the light earrings in while the infection clears up. If you start your piercing over, choose the hypo-allegenic surgical steel studs with 24 kt. yellow gold-plating. These seem to work the best, and keep your ears and hands clean. Let me know, ~Janet

Is it okay to sleep without earrings in?

Posted by Janeen on 10:08 AM July 23, 2009

Sure it's ok to sleep without earrings in, as long as you have kept the first training (piercing) earrings in for at least 6 weeks. Even after that, some people's holes close up fast, so it's best to keep earrings in during the daytime for another 6 weeks.
How long have you had earrings in so far? ~Janet

I'm going to college in a few weeks and I've had my ear pierced for a week now and I was wondering if after the four weeks that I've had my ear pierced if I could switch out my round stud for a stud of the same metal except it has a diamond in it just for an evening during a social event that we are having. Or is that a definite no no?

Posted by Justin Patmon on 01:58 PM July 29, 2009

Hi Jason, These are the criteria to ask yourself: Is the earring twisting very loosely without sticking? Does it feel clean and there are no rough spots on your ear around your earring? If so, it is ok to switch out the earring for a night. Make sure you rub alcohol on: 1) your hands and fingers, 2) the new earring and 3) the old earring as you inspect it for residue and prepare it for re-insertion the next day.
Don't remove before 4 weeks, and please keep it in for the two weeks following your event for best results. Thanks, and have fun! ~Janet

Hi, my six week healing period is over and I took out my starter earrings, but my left ear will start bleeding whenever I try to put my post-earrings in. Also, if I don't leave my earrings in for a while, the hole will sort of "scab" over, and I'm really worried that it will close up. (I can still put the earring in, but it takes awhile to do so. What should I do?

I pierced my ears in march 2009 after 3 weeks it was swollen to the point where the earrings could not close, after cleaning them with alcohol it went down. i thought it was geeting better but a month after the right ears got swollen again, it too went back down. Last week the right ears had some puss inside and i squeeze it out a litte blood came out i had was to use some peroxide on it to stop the bleeding. Can u tell me if u think a lump will grow behind my ears and how before i should stop having these problems? I'm really curious an affraid of getting that lump.

Comment by Jody on 12:36 PM August 23, 2009

    Hi Mishy and Jody,
It seems like you both need more "training" and cleaning time.
At least once a day you should get the 99% pure alcohol and Neosporin into your ear-holes to clean out any lingering or new infection. Push the earring thru, & twist the post to clean inside there. Alcohol your fingers first!
I tried to put an old silver stud into my 2nd hole... I hadn't worn an earring there in a long time. My ear got sore and red, and then a tiny scab formed in the back. I did the cleaning that I just told you for 3 days & now it's fine. I don't think I should wear silver, though.
Don't wear any cheap gold-plate or silver earrings for now. If it doesn't stop the infection in a few days, see your doctor.~Janet

    Hi Janet,
I just got my cartilage pierced around 8 weeks ago and have a soccer game coming up. We're not allowed to wear any jewelry, so I was wondering would it be alright to take my earring out of my cartilage already? Would it close up after an hour and a half?

Posted by Nesley on 07:23 PM August 28, 2009

Hi Nesley, I think it's ok for an hour and a half. The recommended healing time is 12 weeks for cartilage, but if your ear feels healthy (not sensitive, no fluid or crusting) it's fine. Clean your hands, your ear, and the earring before putting it back in your ear. Good luck in your soccer game! ~Janet

Hi Janet, I just got my cartilage pierced two days ago. In three weeks, I have two cross country meets, and we're strictly forbidden from wearing any form of jewelery. We aren't allowed to cover earrings with tape, either. The meets tend to last a couple hours, but the actual running usually takes less than 30 minutes. If I were to take out my earring right before the race, and then put it in directly afterwards (after washing my hands first and such), would that be okay? Or is there a risk that the hole would close in the 30 minutes?

Posted by Alexis on 05:32 PM September 08, 2009

Hi Alexis, I believe that 30-40 minutes will be ok after 3 weeks. My customer changed her cartilage earring after a month. She began doing the cleaning/twisting routine twice a day (instead of once) in preparation. Bring Neosporin creme to your race to help put the earring back in (put it on the earring tip). Good luck! ~Janet

My daughter had her ears pierce for 6 weeks. They look fine but trying to get them out has been a problem. They are the kind that snap at the back and everytime I tried to do it she says they pull and hurt. How do I need to get them out. She wants to wear the others that she has bought.

Posted by Cindy McLean on 08:52 AM September 15, 2009

Hi Cindy, Try putting an ice pack on her ears first. Then put 99% alcohol on your fingers and the earrings, twisting to make sure the posts are spinning freely in her ear. This means they are ready. (Otherwise not yet - more cleaning time.)
Try to get your fingernails under the earring & earring back, & have her count down from 50, but yank your fingers apart quickly! Please keep me posted, ~Janet

My 15 month old got her ears pierced three months ago. At the six week mark she woke up without the earring in her ear. I tried to put it back in, but was unable to so i took her back to the jeweler and he repierced it. I haven't had any problems- cleaned and twisted for 6 weeks as per instructions. However, two days ago I noticed something on her ear(crust around the earring). When I touched it pus came out from the front and back. I cleaned it and took the earring out.I called the doctor and he just said to remove the earring.(I realize that I was periodically making sure that the backing was secure and may have tightened the backing too much). This morning I cleaned it and put a post through only to find a small lump on the back of her ear (almost purplish black maybe a blood blister). The ear isn't red- should I put the earring back or leave it out and what is the lump? Thank You, Mia

Posted by mia on 03:08 PM September 23, 2009

Dear Mia, your daughter has some kind of infection either from dirty fingers or from a sensitivity to the earring metal. That's what the pus & crusting is from. Did you also clean the earring backing? The small lump is scar-tissue, maybe from the piercing. The purple is probably a blood blister. Both will go away with time, or you or a doctor can pierce & drain the blister. If you clean her earlobe & the earring parts with isopropyl alcohol & also Neosporin - NOT Hydrogen Peroxide, it may be ok to keep the earring in. Make sure it is solid gold or Hypo-allergenic Surgical Steel. Otherwise, you may have to let it close up again. Please let me know how it goes, Janet

    Hi Janet.
I got my cartilage pierced roughly 10 weeks ago. It was completely fine till a couple weeks ago. I was getting bubbles on my ear where the earring went in. Just a few days ago I started using non-iodized sea salt to clean it. It is slightly irritated, and now when I take the earring out to clean it, it bleedsa little. Is it bad that I take the earring out when i clean it? I thought it might be more thorough, but maybe im wrong. Please give me any advice you can on how to get my ear better!

Posted by Allison on 01:03 PM September 28, 2009

    Hi Allison,
It's better if you use the pure alcohol and the Neosporin. It's a tried and true method. It's ok to take out the earring, but you can still clean it by twisting every day. The Neosporin creme should sooth your ear. Make sure you get the alcohol & creme inside your ear hole.
What type of metal is your earring? Maybe it's irritating or it could have been the sea salt. Let me know, ~Janet

Posted by kahila on 06:02 PM October 02, 2009

Hi Kahila, Generally, the pain comes from some type of infection. It could have been from dirty fingers, or not enough routine cleaning. Have you been doing your routine? Use the alcohol & Neosporin every day & twist your earrings. Cartilage takes longer to "set." Also, sleep on a soft pillow & on your right side. Keep me posted, ~Janet

Hi, My 6 year old got her ears pierced 6 months ago and all had been going well until about a week ago. She had them done with the Studex earrings. We have changed them a couple of times but only to other Studex ones. Last week we noticed puss etc coming out of the right ear - left ear has been fine. Despite going back to daily cleaning it doesn't seem to be improving and a lot of the crust seemed to be forming on the back of the butterfly clip behind the ear causing even more irritation on the whole back of the lobe. Today I have taken them out and replaced with Studex sleepers to try and keep the whole area clean if/when it gets mucky again. Is this the best thing to do? It just seems like the hole needs room to breathe as such. Also, she has worn these sleepers before for 2 days but when we put the normal studs back in the hole seemed a little tough to get through. I'm not planning on changing them for quite some time now but will the same problem occur?? Thx for any help u give.

Posted by Kelly on 02:29 AM October 04, 2009

Hi Kelly, Yes, her ear could need a breather from the piercing studs. Those posts are thicker for training, so if you take them out, the hole will naturally get smaller. I think the smaller posts will be ok. It seems that something is getting bacteria in her ear hole, so make sure her hands are always clean or she doesn't touch them. Put Neosporin on any posts before inserting each time you change them. I always put it on the piercing post before piercing. If the sleepers work, that's great. Let me know, ~Janet

Comment by Janet Rothstein on 09:49 AM October 05, 2009

Thanks Janet. I'm in Australia and I don't think we have Neosporin here. Don't suppose you know what an equivalent would be? Her ear lobe that was having the most trouble behind it seems to be improving since the sleepers have been in. I am cleaning them morning and night but the hole still has the gunky stuff coming out of it. The sleepers get stuck so need a bit of a push to get them moving through. The ears look good once cleaned but it keeps coming back. Do you know how long it should take for it to clear up for good??? Also will this mean we won't be able to put her normal studs in again as the hole will get smaller with the sleepers or will it just be a matter of trying to gently force them through (won't be trying for a few months at least though!!) Thanks so much once again!

Posted by Kelly on 01:02 AM October 07, 2009

Hi Kelly, Try to find a brand of First-Aid antibiotic creme, containing Neomycin Sulfate & Polymyxin B - those are the key ingredients of Neosporin. This should only take about a week to clear up. She may be sensitive to the posts. Can you get her some small earrings with 18 karat gold posts? That is more pure, or at least get 14 kt. solid gold. Most earrings will have slender posts, so they should all go thru fine. Don't put the training studs back in.
    Keep me posted, thanks, ~Janet

I am cleaning them twice a day and keep think they are starting to heal but then they start bleeding again and oozing clear liquid, althought there's no pus. The one is worse than the other and what's really worried me now, is the bad one has started to look discoloured (blackish bluish colour) around the hole at the back of the ear. What should I do?

Posted by Sue on 11:35 AM October 19, 2009

Dear Sue, Your daughter seems to have an allergic reaction to the metal. You should probably remove the earrings and take her to the doctor. What type of earrings (14 kt. karat gold or surgical steel) were used for the piercing? Is she keeping her hands away from her ears? You may have to clean out her holes better & let them rest & close up. Then try again with a different type of piercing stud.
Please let me know what happens. Sincerely, ~Janet

Hi, I got my cartilage pierced 2 weeks ago and it was fine for the first week. I've been doing all the cleaning and taking care of it but 3 days ago I bumped my ear and its bruised now. It feels warm and hurts but also itches. Then today there is a little lump behind my ear lobe like where my limph nodes are. Is this normal? Should I see a doctor about it? Also, if not is there anything I can do to help it heal faster because my ear is red and bruised. Thanks

Posted by Kim on 07:39 PM October 26, 2009

Hi Kim, 2 weeks in still relatively new, and cartilage is more sensitive than the ear lobes. How is it today? You can put ice on it (in a paper towel) and then warm salt water.
Little lumps are normal, and the bruise will fade, but if you are still concerned, please call a doctor. ~Janet

Posted by Amy on 10:07 AM January 29, 2010

Hi Amy, It's not unusual for one ear to be more sensitive for a day or two. 3rd holes may be in a slightly thicker part of the ear. Do you sleep on that side? Clean your finger-tips well, get some Neosporin (or Ear Care Gel) into the hole and gently twist the earring a bit. It should be fine in 2 days. Let me know, ~Janet

I am an adult male in professional school. I want to get my ears pierced (lobes), but I have a summer job, plus job interviews and meetings, etc. throughout the year when I won't be able to have them in, and will need the piercing holes themselves to be basically not noticeable. Assuming I can find a 6 week window where I can pretty much leave them in, can I get away after that with mostly just sleeping in them for 6--7 hours every night and not wearing them during the day, and is there at least a decent chance that they will be healed enough at that point that the holes won't be too obvious when the earrings are out?

Posted by Will on 07:48 PM February 02, 2010

Hi, i got my ears pierced TWO weeks ago, and it was fine up until 5 days later when the one on my cartilage started to be slightly painful, so I asked my sister to loosen the lock, but she ended up taking off the earring. I got it back on, it's fine now, after putting ice on it, but the other locks started bothering me so I replaced them with ones that are easier to adjust. The other pair of earrings for my earlobes was a bit too big, so I replaced it with ones that I bought. I did that today. It's not really painful or swollen, just pinkish and when i touch it, there's kind of a stinging sensation where the hole is. Does this mean it's starting to get infected. Oh, and I cleaned my ears and earrings first with alcohol before i put them on.

And also, at work, we constantly get inspections and we're only allowed to wear one pair of earrings. I have three pairs. Will it be all right to remove them for like 4 hours and put them back on at least after the inspections are over.

Posted by Gladz on 11:00 PM February 03, 2010

Dear Will, Adults' ears don't close up as fast as kids' ears, so not wearing them during the day may work for you. If there's any way you can go a little more than the 6 week training/routine period, that would help. Make sure that when you twist your earrings near that week, that they turn freely, & there is no sensitivity or "crusting" near the hole. It shouldn't show much for your meetings. (Clean and put earrings back in as soon as you get home the first few days!) ~Janet

Comment by Janet on 01:11 AM February 05, 2010

Dear Gladz, The cartilage does take longer to heal than the ear lobes, so I hope they don't close up while you're at work! Two weeks isn't usually enough time. If you can go to the restroom every so often and put a drop of Neosporin or Vaseline or ear care gel on the tip of an earring and push it thru, that will help.
As for the pain, make sure the earrings backs you are using very clean (I read you did that) and are NOT gold-plated. Many people are sensitive to costume jewelry. Use 585 (14K) solid gold or 925 Sterling Silver (look for the stamps). Also, clean the tips of any eyeglasses clean. (Germs live on them too!) Let me know, ~Janet

Is this one infected? or could it just be from like sleeping on it cause I sleep on that side every night. You think I can take them out to sleep?

Posted by Noelle on 01:57 AM February 13, 2010

Hi Noelle, I think you really need to clean out the hole (& keep doing it every day)- sounds infected. Try to get lots of alcohol and Neosporin in the hole, front and back. If the alcohol hurts, use a Q-tip dipped in hot salt water. Don't try to take the earring out if it is stuck; only if it twists. After your ear is cleaned, you can remove it. Clean it with lots of alcohol & put it right back in! The hole may close up unless it's "matured". Later you can remove it to sleep & try to sleep on the other side or your back, on a soft pillow.

I got my ears pierced last Friday...it is now Tuesday. I had no real pain until today, and have been continuing to keep my ears clean.

My right ear (which hurt more during the piercing) is perfectly fine, but my left ear has a bit of throbbing pain. It's also slightly swollen, but not red, itchy, or leaking pus or anything like that. I've read that it shouldn't be 'hot to the touch' but I really don't know what that means...it feels warm, but not overly hot (I don't think).

    Advice? Is this normal?

Posted by Kenna on 02:18 PM February 16, 2010

    Hi Kenna,
Pain can come from infections, sensitivity, or from knocking your earring by accident. It can be from dirty fingers or an irritating metal. Sometimes one ear lobe is thicker than the other, so the cleaning liquids don't get inside the hole as well as on the thinner side.
If it's not red, leaking, or really hot, just try to put Neosporin cream inside the hole and rotate the earring a little. You can put a warm compress of salt water on your ear. Some people prefer ice in a paper towel - what ever feels best. It should go away soon (take Tylenol.) Please keep me posted, ~Janet

I clean them everyday and put Neosporin on the posts when I put them back in. My boyfriend got his ear pierced a week after me and he takes his out at night, every night and he doesn't seem to have anything on them (sometimes I switch his earring for him) so why do I? Sometimes my like ear lobe itches too, but they're never red. And it's never a problem to take them out or put them back in they just slide in and out. Sometimes when I clean them I notice little like scabs or dead skin fall off onto the cotton pad. Is that normal?

    thanks,

Posted by Kathrine on 09:57 PM February 24, 2010

    Dear Indy and Noelle,
You both sound like the earring is irritating your ear - you could be allergic or sensitive to the metal. You may need to change the earrings to an 18 karat gold (or at least 14 karat), or hypoallergenic material. Do not get anything that is "fashion" jewelry or silver right now.
Clean off your ears well with alcohol, and then put a washcloth soaked in very warm salt-water against your ears.
Some people take more time to "mature" their ears. Keep your fingertips very clean! The little dead skin is dried liquid... that should stop soon. The raised thing should go away soon, too.
Please let me know how you are after a week. ~Janet

Comment by Janet on 12:15 PM February 25, 2010

    Dear Katherine,
First of all, the gun is fine - I use it without any problem. The lump is a scar-tissue reaction. I would go to your doctor to see if there is an infection inside the ear - he may need to check for an abscess & clean it. Then let it heal, and re-pierce it in another spot nearby - not on the exact spot where the lump was, unless you wait longer.
The piercing should be done with 24 kt. pure yellow gold over hypo-allergenic Surgical Steel - not just stainless, and not even 14 kt. - you could be allergic to the alloy. Let me know, ~Janet

thank tou so much for your reply.
i will follow your advice and hope it helps!
i was just wondering: do i need to re-pierce if there is no infection- will the scar tissue go away or imporve if is do so?
and should this be done with a gun or needle, because i have pierced my ears twice in 8 years, with gun.
lastly, how long should i wait to re-pierce?

    kind regards :0)

Posted by kathrine on 02:57 AM February 28, 2010

You can re-pierce, but you don't have to if it has not closed up. Keep up the alcohol routine with Neosporin, I believe the lump will go away. The gun will work well if it is really sterilized, and you use the 24K Surgical studs.
Many people wait 1 year, but if there is no lump, you can go ahead.

    Hi,
I got my ears pierced December 26th, 2009 with 14kt Gold Studs. This is my 1st time ever in my life as I had always been afraid I'd get keloids or something after seeing someone in high school with very large Keloids on each of her ears.
Well, After 6 weeks, I tried to switch them out with another pair 14kt metal earrings and after just a few minutes, it was very hard to place back in my ear. Almost like the hole closed up. I placed studs back in and now its been almost 9 or 10 weeks, and they are still sore and my hole in the left ear gives me the most problems. Is this normal? Should I always keep earrings in? It's irritating to sleep with them in my ear. Since this is new to me, will I have to continually wear earrings in my ear? Everytime I change my earrings out, I always have to force them thru the original hole? My ear bleeds and is sensitive. PLEASE help. THANK YOU so much!

Comment by Toni on 08:28 AM March 10, 2010

Dear Toni, It seems that your ears were not ready (trained) for the new earrings yet. The back hole always closes up before the front hole. Also, it could be that you are sensitive to 14 kt. gold.
We had a recent experience where the girl's ear lobes were too thick for the earring posts, and the backs were pushed on so tight that the earlobe started enveloping the backs.
I think you need to get hypoallergenic earrings or 18 KT - perhaps leverbacks, and clean out your holes with alcohol and Neosporin before insertion. If you take them out, the holes will close up and you will have to re-pierce. Please let me know in a few days what it feels like.

Dear Zack, On your left ear, try Isopropyl Alcohol instead of saltwater sometimes. The back holes always close up before the front. You are young, so don't leave earrings out for long - you heal fast! It's OK to push it thru even though it hurts a little...use the alcohol & NeoSporin to help that and also to remove the crusting. Suzanne, What kind of metal are your earrings made of? Are you using a soft enough pillow? Try using "Neosporin with Pain Relief"- it's a yellow tube with white cream. Get that into your earring hole..It may stop the hurting. and you may need to keep them in longer.

I've had my second piercings done on December 8th 2009, they are on my earlobe. It's been a few months now and they are still oozing lymph...they dont appear to be infected but they're just oozing lymph. It doesn't hurt to remove or put back in my starter studs and I can leave them without the studs for a few hours without them closening up. They were done with a gun. So I would like to know if this is abnormal or if they're just taking a little longer to heal. Also around the piercing has a slight raise in the tissue. Can you please give me some advice? (thanks in advance)

Hi Melissa, I just spoke with someone who had the same problem. Her ears took much longer to "mature." She switched from alcohol to hydrogen peroxide. Keep up with the routine either with alcohol, or HP, or warm salt water, and Neosporin. The piercing gun shouldn't matter - we use it, sterlized after each person. As l long as you are not in pain, you will be ok. Some people just take longer... sometimes with thicker ear lobes. Let me know next month. ~Janet

Thank you very much for the advice, my earlobes are quite thick so that maybe the problem. I'm not sure if they sell Neosporin here in Barbados (i'll have to check) but I'm using an anti-biotic powder on them along with the hydrogen peroxide. I will let you know how they're coming along. Once again thank you.

My 5 year old daughter had her ears pierced one year ago. We cleaned them with the solution the piercer provided and twisted them as instructed. She seemed to have a problem with the stud earring becoming attached to the skin of the ear lobe. I bought a pair of loop earring which helped tremendously. It seemed to let the air heal the piercing. She still has a lot of lymph fluid. We switched back to the studs and they again attached to the ear lobe after a few days (we were cleaning them daily). I switched back to the loops, but there is still a lot of lymph fluid and an open area where the ball of the stud attached to the lobe. Is there anything I can put on the piercing to help healing and stop the lymph fluid build up? I have used Neosporin , but the open area seems so "wet" and I need to dry it up. Thanks for your help!

Comment by Molly on 12:34 PM April 20, 2010

Hi Molly, Try Isopropyl alcohol, which has a drying affect on the area. Use this once a day for several weeks and twist them; and then do it every month, keeping the earrings super-clean.
Some people's ears seem to "swallow" up the studs, if they are too tight, so give them plenty of room to "breathe," as the loops do. Make sure the earring is made of a finer gold content - not gold-plated costume unless it is surgical steel inside. Please let me know if this helps. ~Janet

Ears pierced yesterday. To turn or not to turn. To use peroxide or sea salt?

Posted by Doris Benjamin on 04:23 PM May 03, 2010

Hi Doris, I have been piercing ears for 20 years. My answer is: Use Isopropyl Alcohol, (& Neosporin for at least a week) not peroxide or sea salt. You need to keep the germs out. Yes on gentle twisting. This gets the alcohol into the holes and prevents the ear from sticking to the earring post. If you can't grab the earring to twist, then at least gently push and pull the earring thru the hole.

I got my second ear pierced little over 2 weeks ago. My ear was fine until few days later after I got my ear pierced, and it started to swell up, so I clean my pierced ear with Isopropyl alcohol for few days but it irritated and swell up even more. So I went to see my doctor and she gave me antibiotic. I also found out that sea salt soaking is really good for when healing pierced ear or when pierced ear get infected. Is that true?

I have a another question I been soaking my swollen ear with warm water with sea salt. After I'm done soaking and rinse off my ear with water and dry my ear. my ear get dry and gets crusty, and thing that makes crusty is clear and puss. Please helpme!!

Hi this is Melissa, just giving you an update on how my ears are doing. They've "settled down". They aren't oozing lymph anymore and the raise in tissue has gone down. I've changed my piercing studs to 14kt gold studs which has worked wonders because it appeared that the other earrings gave me a pretty bad rash (which have disppeared since i removed the starter studs). I just want to say thank you very much for the advice...just this question- when will it be "ok" for me to wear sterling silver in the piercings?

Posted by JayVon on 09:26 PM May 10, 2010

Hi Vivian, the sea salt can make the ear get a bit crusty. If your ear felt OK with the doctor's antibiotic, then use the sea salt and next put on some Neosporin creme to get into the ear hole, keep up for 6 more weeks. Your ear may have gotten infected, so be very careful with keeping your fingers clean, too. ~Janet

Hi Melissa, nice to hear from you! I would say that 4 to 6 months is a good time from now to put in silver. Make sure is it stamped "925" for Sterling Silver, and it is made in Italy or the USA. (from China & Mexico is less pure) Always clean the new earrings with alcohol or hand sanitizer before inserting them. ~Janet

Comment by Janet on 11:40 AM May 11, 2010

Hi Jay, Friday is really too soon to take your piercing out! Especially if it is swelling or irritated. What happens is the holes start to close up and then it will bleed if you try to push the posts back in. You will have to start over. Keep up the cleaning routine. My suggestion is: buy some really gorgeous earrings that are clip-on and put them on next to your piercing. ~Janet

My 9 yr old got her ears pierced 8/09 & had problems from the start due to chubby ear lobes. We had to switch her starter earrings with hoops which aggravated the piercings at first. After 6 months of her ears not healing we went to the dr & received a 15 day course of antibiotics for chronic infection, went back dr she said the infection is gone and dr said she may have an allergy to a metal. Her ears are still not healing properly, if you move the earring too much the piercings get red. She has 14k in now which has cooper and sterling silver as additives, no nickel. Should I up grade to 18k? I cleaned her piercings today with alcohol and they got very red and inflamed. I have been dealing with this for months, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Anna, Some people do have metal allergies. 18K. is more pure; I would try ball earrings made of 18K yellow gold. (We carry some.) Instead of alcohol, just try the "Neosporin Creme with Pain Relief" in the ear holes and on any new earring before insertion. If she wears glasses make sure the ends are clean. I hope she feels better; let me know. ~Janet

Hi Janet, thank you so much for your quick reply. On buying the 18k gold, do you feel that buying posts would be better than hoops? Originally we had to take out her starter posts because they were too tight & her holes were not getting enough air circulation because of her thick ear lobes. Also, do you think that having the small hoops in this whole time may be causing too much movement and not allowing the holes to heal?

I really appreciate being able to come here and get some helpful feedback.....Anna

Posted by Anna on 12:59 PM May 15, 2010

Thanks, Anna! One of my young clients had the same problem - thicker ear lobes. We gave her leverback earrings to try, and that worked for better air circulation. Later we made her 18K flower studs with longer posts. If her hoops are too big, sleeping on them may put undue pressure, but I think it could be the metal allergy. Try 18K yellow gold and/or leverbacks, or extra-long posts. And she must use the Neosporin or similar antibiotic creme. ~Janet

I live in Massachusetts and I was quoted $175.00 for 18k extended post earrings with a little cut stone. I just recently bought her the 14k hoop earrings, my daughter will end up having nicer earring than me at this rate!

    Hi Anna,
I recommend that you squeeze a little Neosporin behind the earring, and twist it into the hole once a day for at least a week, and up to 6 weeks if necessary! Also, our price is only $90 for real colored stone or CZ stud earrings (about 20 pts. each) with extended 18 K. posts. (We are wholesale-priced.) Call me anytime if you would like more info. Hi Amber, 3 times a day may be too much for your ears - once a day is fine! But it may be the earring that you are sensitive to. Was it surgical steel with gold or solid gold? Those are the best, not titanium or silver or regular stainless steel. Sleeping on them should only hurt in the morning a little bit.
Make sure your fingers are clean before you touch your ears. What do you clean them with? Try something different. Call me (800)544-7440. ~Janet

Hi Janet - I see you've helped so many with your answers....so I thought I'd see if you could provide some advice.

My five-year-old daughter had her ears pierced 6/26/10 -- and had been doing great with them. After 6 weeks we removed them and kept earrings in her ears. Then, this weekend, she was at my in-laws for the weekend - one earring fell out on Saturday night and I didn't find out about it until Sunday night - and even after I asked them to replace it they had no interest in helping. (They were against ear piercing that young in the first place.) They are bringing her home tonight so I can attempt to put in another earring in that hole - but I'm afraid that after 48 hours the hole will have closed. Oh, I'm just so frustrated with them - if only they simply would have put an earring in once they realized she had lost it (minutes after it fell out!).

    Any advice?

Posted by Jennifer on 06:43 AM August 16, 2010

Hi Jennifer, The hole may have gotten narrower but hopefully won't have closed down completely. Try to put an earring in right away, and clean her earlobe with alcohol on front and back first. Also, put Neosporin on the tip of the earring post before inserting it. That will help it go in easier. Holes usually start to close at the back, so you may have to push harder at the end to get it thru. Use an ice pack to numb it if you have to, and restart the daily cleaning routine for 2 more weeks.

If the earring goes in without any trouble, she'll be fine! Next time she goes to your in-laws, she should wear earrings that won't come out, like endless hoops, or leverbacks.. or tighten the regular earring backings by squeezing the curled parts gently together. Hope this helps, ~Janet

    Hi Janet,
I got my ears pierced in the beginning of june. I've taken out my earrings to clean several times already after I hit the 4 week mark and never had any problems.
But today, after I took my shower and took out my earrings to clean, I couldn't put them back in completely no matter how much I changed the angle or numbed my ears, it was like the back hole closed in a matter of 2 minutes. It started bleeding a bit after a while so I stopped trying to put it on. I can feel a tiny bump at the back of my ears and when I looked with a hand mirror, it's purple/red like a bruise. The front looks completely normal. It's a little bit sore when I touch it.

What's going on? I decided to leave it out while I sleep. Will it close by tomorrow? Should I try to put it back in tomorrow?

    Thanks!

Posted by Lily on 02:32 AM September 05, 2010

    Hi Lily,
First of all, you are not supposed to take out your earrings at all during the 6-week training period! You just get the alcohol and Neosporin or ear care gel onto your earlobes, and into the hole by twisting the earrings back and forth. Removing the earrings irritates your ears and makes them want to close, and they always close at the back.

You may have an infection, or the purple could be from the blood.
It may close up by tomorrow. You can put ice behind your ears and try to shove the earring through. But you have to put Neosporin on your earlobe first, front and back. If you can't get them back thru, you can have an experienced Ear Piercer re-pierce your ear in the exact spot.

You need to follow my exact Ear Piercing After-Care procedure outlined in this blog. Keep the training studs in for at least 4 more weeks. You will have perfect piercings if you always keep your fingers clean and do the cleaning routine every night. Keep me posted, ~Janet

    Hi Janet,
Thanks for the advice. I got some Neosporin and tried to put the earrings through again. I got it through my right ear easily without any pain or bleeding at all.
My left ear was a bit trickier. Turns out, I've been trying to stab myself a new piercing, that's why it hurt so bad and it bled. This morning the purple went down significantly, and luckily, my piercings didn't close. After a couple of tries it went through smoothly and into the right hole.
I'll keep my earrings in for at least four more weeks. I will definitely not take them out again.
    Thanks for all your help!

Today (sunday) when she got home I took the stud out and cleaned it with HP. i noticed it had some pus come out also as I cleaned it. I washed the earing with Hydraclense. Also put neosporin on the earring and slid it back in. not red no real swelling but a little soar. what should I do?

Posted by Jamie Clark on 06:46 PM September 19, 2010

Hi Jamie, You have been doing everything right. She must have touched her ear with dirty fingers or not cleaned it properly for a day or 2. The Neosporin will help, and it will be fine if she keeps up the cleaning routine - but don't stop until another week or so. It should be perfect before she tries new earrings. ~Janet

Hi. My six year old daughter got her ears pierced four months ago. After 14 weeks I changed her earings to 14K gold and they were fine. A week later we changed again to a pair of mine but I did not know what type of metal it was. The right ear lobe swelled up and started to bleed after a few days. We had to bring her to the doctors to have the earing removed because a bump developed on the back next to the hole and it was so swelled up you could not grip the backing. This was five days ago. We have been cleaning it with mild soap and water and applying neosporin twice a day. My question is should I try to put an earing (like her training stud) back in? The bump has gone down but not completely. How long until the hole closes up? Should I just have it repierced?

Posted by Christine on 07:46 PM September 26, 2010

If you can get the 14K gold earring in, try that with some Neosporin on the tip. You can try the training post, but it may be too thick by now. If either earring goes in with no pain, she will be fine. Keep up the training routine of alcohol and Neosporin, and gentle twisting of the earring.
If no earring can get thru, let the hole close up, but still keep it clean. It takes a week to a few months. You can re-pierce it, but wait til there is no more bump. Best of luck & let me know, ~Janet

I don't have rubbing alcohol can I use purell to clean my piercing? If so , how? Should I take the piercing out then clean or should I leave it in and dab purell near piercing area.

Posted by Sheena on 04:11 PM October 03, 2010

Hi Sheena, Purell may work fine, but see if it has aloe in it. Some people are more sensitive to that. Leave the earring in for about 6 weeks, and get the Purell into the hole 1x a day til then. That's what twisting the earring does. Let me know how that works.
Some people like salt water, Hydrogen Peroxide, or Bacitracin.

My 9-year old daughter has had pierced ears for about nine months now and has always worn either 10K or 14K gold post earrings. Our habit has been to leave the same pair in for a month or so and to clean around the piercing a couple of times a week with either alcohol or the ear care solution. Every so often one of the earlobes will look red, and when I clean it with a Q-Tip soaked in alcohol, blood or a little pus might come out of the hole, and this seems to be happening more frequently. When this happens, I will take the earrings out and thoroughly clean her earlobes and earrings with alcohol, apply neosporin on her earlobes and her earrings before re-inserting. If this is an infection, I'm wondering why this is happening repeatedly, as we keep everything clean. Could this possibly be an allergic reaction to the jewelry? I thought I'd try some surgical steel earrings to see if things improve. I'm surprised we're dealing with this after 9 months. Your thoughts?

Posted by Karin on 07:17 AM October 07, 2010

Hi Karin, Ears are still at risk from infection after the training period. It sounds like an allergic reaction to an earring. I wouldn't use 10K right now - it's only 50% gold. Surgical steel made in the USA or England is fine. (Unfortunately those made in China are not always safe.) Make sure the posts are long enough so that there is some breathing room, & the backings aren't squeezed on too tightly.

You are right to do the thorough cleaning once a week for the rest of the year. Always put Neosporin on any new earrings before insertion - anyone could have touched them with unclean hands.
Let me know if that helps, ~Janet

    Hi Janet,

Thank you for your advice to me (directly above). I wanted to let you know that my daughter is now wearing only surgical steel earrings (made in USA) and I remove her earrings weekly to clean both the earrings and her earlobes in alcohol, then I apply neosporin to both her earlobes and earrings before reinserting (if I'm inserting different earrings, I clean them with alcohol and neosporin as well). Since we've been following this routine, I haven't seen any blood or pus from her piercings. The only thing I noticed is that last night when I removed her earrings and cleaned everything, one of her earlobes remained bright red for about an hour. Do you think this is anything to be worried about? Her ears have been pierced since Jan.

Thanks for your great help on this blog. Wish I could have had you pierce my daughter's ears, but we're in Pennsylvania.

Hi Nick, After 6 months, you may be able to leave your earrings out for 3 days. But - if it's 3 days in a row, each day you should dot your earlobe with the alcohol and push the earring post thru the hole... just to make sure that it isn't closing up. ~Janet

Also im confused about this part-you should dot your earlobe with the alcohol and push the earring post thru the hole... just to make sure that it isn't closing up??? can you please explain- Do you mean take a cotton ball with Alcohol and dab on my hole- front and back? Hi Nick, Yes, your plan is fine. (but why?) The Ear Care Antiseptic is fine, too, but Isopropyl Alcohol & Neosporin work great if you run out. Do the cleaning every day for 6 weeks with the earring in. When you decide to not wear an earring every day, still push the post thru with your cleaner every 2 days. (sometimes ear holes close quickly) : )

    Hi Janet,

I had my baby's ears pierced about 4 weeks ago, but I've noticed now that one of her holes is slightly higher than the other. If i take her earrings out, will they close up so she can have them redone later? Or will there always be little "hole" scars? Thanks!

Posted by tashina pham on 12:26 PM November 30, 2010

    Dear Nick,
It's best to put a drop of the Ear Care gel or Neosporin onto the tip of the earring post, and push the post thru your ear for a second.(Every 3 days.) This will keep the ear- hole clean and not let it close up.

    Dear Tashina,
You may remove the earrings (with clean fingers) and the holes will close up with no scars. But before you remove the earrings, you should get some alcohol into the ear-hole (& twist the earrings) to clean out the hole, so it can close up infection-free.
Something to think about is: if you just remove the one earring that you think is off-center, you can have someone re-pierce that one later to match. (Of course she would be starting a new fashion trend of wearing just one earring for about 4 months!)

hi =) i got my second hole pierced on my earlobe 8 days ago, everything seems fine. no infection or anything but when i wake up in the morning the starter studs have went half way inside the hole! i think they are to small and tight and my earlobe is to thick, so i went to the place i got them pierced at to ask if they had any other starter studs i could have with longer posts and they said they are all the same size.... i even went to a different place that pierce ears and they said the same thing. i took the stud out just to give them a quick clean and the hole looks really big. what should i do? keep the starter studs in even if the are starting to imbed inside my ear? or should i switch earrings, to some gold diamond studs i have.... the diamond keeps the stud from going inside the hole....but i know the post isnt as thick as the starter ones... raawwrrr heeellppp

Posted by Kali on 12:58 PM December 11, 2010

    Hi Ana,
Your ear lobe needs to get used to the thicker gauge. Hopefully you are using surgical stainless steel. Use an antibacterial soap or Neosporin and move the earring thru your ear to make sure there's no infection. You can soak your earlobe in warm salt water to feel better also. Make sure you wait 2 weeks before going to thicker gauges. Also, try to sleep on the other side of your head.
Let me know how it goes. ~Janet

Comment by Janet on 01:14 AM December 12, 2010

    Hi Kali,
It is dangerous for the earring to create you a bigger hole. There are options:
1: You need to get bigger starter studs; they do make 5 mm piercing studs - but yes, the posts are all the same length. Try to find those.
2: Get someone to solder some thicker, longer posts onto your diamond studs, and keep up the cleaning and twisting routine daily.
3: Get clear plastic disks to put between the front of the earring and you ear; the posts goes thru the hole in the disk.
Don't let them close up! If you can't find any of those things, call me & I'll get something to you immediately.

I just got my one earlobe repaired on November 30, 2010. I wanted the doctor to leave a hole so I can wear post-ear rings and he would not. The docotor just close it and told me to wait for 6 months. Then I needed to come back for them to remove the stiches I had mention to the doctor I wanted to where studs and the other doctor at the same place I had my earlobe repaired he told me to wait for a few months. I asked him if I waited until January or February could I studs and he thought it would be ok. I am not sure what to do. I keep my earlobe clean, but I don't want to wait for six months and I also don't want my earlobe to spilt again. What should I do?

    Hi Valerie,
It's important for the ear to heal, and it is always best to do what the doctor says. Put a Q-tip or cotton ball with "Witch Hazel" and then Neosporin or other anti-biotic on the front and back of your earlobe. That will heal faster. If in February, you don't feel any sensitivity or scarring, then you can re-pierce your ear. But make sure the piercer doesn't feel any ball or sensitive lump.
Or, pierce the ear in a new spot.
For now, wear some pretty lightweight clip earrings! ~Janet

    Hi,

I just got my ears pierced for the first time yesterday and I have no pain or anything. When I came home from work today, I noticed a small round bump right beside my lymph node. It doesn't hurt, but it is a little red. I am not sure if it is a pimple growing or if it's some normal that occurs after piercing.

Posted by Paris on 03:37 PM January 05, 2011

    Hi Paris,
I'm not sure where the lymph node is that you mentioned. But sometimes a small bump appears inside the earlobe, as a slight reaction to the piercing. I would dip a washcloth in hot salty water & hold it to the bump for a few minutes, for a few days.
Keep up the cleaning routine with the alcohol and Neosporin each day. If the bump doesn't seem to go away in a few days, see a doctor. Let me know, ~Janet

    Hi Janet,
I recently had my first holes done a 3rd time. I've learned from having my nose pierced that I'm just an incredibly slow healer, and am hoping that if I leave my starter earrings in for 3-6 months (basically until I have no irritation, bumps or any problem at all with my ears) that these holes will be successful.
My question is, if I leave the training earrings in that long, should I first transition to a smaller post, or can I go straight to a leverback or hoop?

    Thanks,
    Holly

Posted by Holly on 11:17 AM February 11, 2011

    Hi Holly,
You can leave the training earrings in for that long, but make sure you keep up the cleaning routine with the alcohol every few days after the 1st 6 weeks. I usually recommend a straight post for the first transition, but if you can get a lightweight leverback earring in or hoop that's ok. Make sure to clean the new earrings before inserting them!
Also, if your ears close up easily, try to keep earrings in most of the time.
Best of luck and don't give up, ~Janet

Hi, I got my ears re-pierced five weeks ago yesterday, I have cleaned them out and rotated them twice a day for that entire period with no problem. Out of nowhere today my right ear started to hurt and when I finally had the chance to clean my hands and my ears and really look at it it started to bleed and pus out of the back. I took the earring out and cleaned the hole and the earring really well and put it back in, if I continue to keep it clean and put some neosporin on it, do you think it will be ok? Should I leave my studs in longer because it was bleeding? Thank you, Angela.

Posted by Angela on 10:30 PM March 01, 2011

    Hi Angela,
Yes, just keep the studs in longer, until you feel no sensitivity; and only rotate once a day. Make sure your fingers are super clean and keep your cell phone away from your ear lobes! (They have so many germs!)
You are doing the right thing. ~Janet

I got my ears pierced about six weeks ago and took my earrings out for the first time because it's just easier to clean them that way, and I felt very small lumps in the piercing, kind of like they were swollen right there. Is that normal? I know for sure they aren't infected. They aren't red or painful or anything, and my friend had hers done at the same time as mine and said hers are the same way. Is this normal and what is it?

Posted by Meg on 05:34 PM March 14, 2011

Hi Meg. These small lumps are mini-reactions to the piercing, like scar tissue. If it doesn't hurt and no liquid comes out, then it's OK. They will most likely go away. Don't worry - just keep them clean. : )

Just curious if you know of anywhere to get 14k jewelry that LOOKS like costume? I really would like decorative earrings like you may get at Claire's, but don't want them to aggravate my ears.

    Thanks!

    Hi
My daughter just had her ears pierced two days ago with 14k gold studs. I have been following the advice of the piercer, using the solution I was given and cleaning and rotating her earrings three times a day. Last night and this morning I noticed a little redness around the earrings. There's no swelling or puss, but my daughter says it hurts when I clean them. What should I do? Is this normal or a concern?
    Thanks so much!

Hello. My daughter got her ears pierced about 2 months ago, she is 16 months old. The last two nights she has woken up with blood coming out of one of the piercings. When I cleaned it she was crying alot. I noticed a black looking spot on the back of the lobe and it feels a bit hard. I took the earing out and cleaned it but I am worried about the black spot. PLease help.

Posted by allison on 10:16 AM May 18, 2011

    Hi Belinda,
First of all, you only need to clean and rotate once a day - more could be irritating. She could either be sensitive to the 14 kt. studs (which contain some alloy) or to the solution, or she could have dirty fingers near her ears. The best advice I can give is to follow our tried and true routine. Use isopropyl alcohol then Neosporin on the posts, and rotate once a day. If that doesn't work, then she needs to change to surgical steel posts. Let me know, ~Janet

Posted by Janet on 10:27 AM May 19, 2011

    Hi Allison,
It sounds like you should take her to the doctor to check it out. Possibly an infection. Babies are hard to watch all the time, to make sure no bacteria gets near her earrings. It could be a reaction to the piercing... that could go away, but I would have them take a look!

Posted by Janet on 10:31 AM May 19, 2011

I got my ears peirced three weeks ago. Everything was fantastic until three days ago when I accidentally hit my left ear peircing. Since then it hurts like heck to twist the earring and that ear has been really swollen. My right ear is doing well... what do I do for my swollen ear??

I clean both ears three times a day with antiseptic and I twist them as well.

    Should I see a doctor?
I dont have health insurance so would it cost a lot?

Posted by Jacinta on 11:05 PM June 06, 2011

Because I was extremely worried, I went to the doctor and was prescribed medicine as well as receiving a shot. My ear is swollen but the doc was not sure if it was infected because there wasn't any pus.

The doc failed to answer one of my concern and I would love it if you can.

When I rotate it one full rotation it hurts REALLY bad during this rotation... like ripping skin??... And then after I rotate it another revolution, it doesn't hurt as bad. Why is this? "My cells" are not trying to attach itself to the earring post in like half a day is it? ... o.O

How long does it take for this to heal even after getting an antibacterial shot and taking medication?

Posted by Jacinta on 11:42 PM June 07, 2011

Hi Jacinta, I'm glad you went to the doctor anyway. Sometimes the earrings do feel like they are sticking to the skin inside there. That's why we use the Isopropyl rubbing alcohol and NeoSporin before twisting. It really seems to work well. You could put an ice pack on your earlobe before the cleaning/twisting to reduce the swelling. You could have stretched the hole when it was hit, so only do this routine once a day so it is not irritated.

What are the earrings made of? You could be sensitive to that metal. You may have to switch metals. If this doesn't stop, you can remove the earring and let it close up & start over, but try not to give up.
    Keep me posted, ~Janet

Hi janet. I got my ears pierced at you 2 weeks ago. I forgot to do the back of my ear. I only cleaned the front. Will I get and infection. Also, after you take a shower it sais to put alchhol onb it. Does that mean to put alchhol on it a second time including neosporin or just alchoholing it after the shower (the only time) without alchohol? I am confused.

Posted by Natasha on 07:19 AM June 22, 2011

Hi Natasha, You won't get an infection if you only clean the front of your earring, as long as you touch the posts and twist it gently to get it into the hole. (Do the back also from now on, with alcohol.)
The best time to do your cleaning is after the shower, once a day. First do the alcohol and twist, then do the Neosporin and twist. If you don't take a shower every day, then just do your cleaning routine before going to bed. : ) ~Janet

Do you think I should re-pierce my ear?
I'm a middle-aged guy, so I'm a little ignorant on this subject. Twelve years ago, my left ear was pierced. It was our anniversary. My wife and I bought a pair of diamond studs-- one for her and one for me. My hole is, basically, in the center of my earlobe. While the stud looks OK, sometimes I'll wear a hoop, but my wife says that doesn't look right because she thinks that the hole is too high. She says it should be about 3/4 down the earlobe. What is the proper placement? If I re-pierce it, what will happen to the old hole? Will it just close up? Will it leave a scar?

Also, I don't wear an earring full-time-- especially not in professional situations. In that I need to leave any new piercing in for 6-8 weeks, isn't there some kind of clear plastic or acrylic post that's less noticeable?

I'm also, now, considering doing the other ear, too. What do you think? Thanks, in advance for your advice, Janet.

Posted by Dave on 09:18 AM June 28, 2011

Hi Dave, In my vast experience, the center of an earlobe is the perfect place for the hole, not lower. Later in life, the hole can get larger and droop! You may need a slightly larger hoop earring, to look right to your wife.
If you pierce a new hole, the old hole will still show a bit and may never close up. A hole will start to close up in the back - not the front.

For a piercing, it's always best to use the Studex basic silver-color studs (there are squares or circles) for the training period, but some kids put bandaids over them during sports games. I haven't found any good clear studs. You can thread clear fishing line thru and tie it in a knot after about 3 weeks. You still have to do the routine cleaning and twisting once a day.
    Good luck, ~Janet

Hi! I just got my right ear lobe pierced a week ago. I know it's too early, but soon I would like to put in a sterling silver hoop earring. How long must I wait before I put one in? Is there anything else I should be aware of regarding something like this?

Posted by William Warf on 09:13 PM July 05, 2011

The best amount of time is really 6 weeks! The hole must mature, otherwise it can get infected or close down too much. If your ear lobe is thicker it may take longer. Do your cleaning routine, and make sure the Sterling Silver hoop is clean before you insert it. Good luck!

Hi I had my daughters ears pierced 2 weeks ago. She is 3. I don't feel like they are perfectly even. I am thinking about removing one or both and having them done at a later time but I don't want there to be a hole left there. Will there be a scar after only having them for 2 weeks? Also, they are only slightly off and I am afraid of making them worse. Please give help. :) Thanks!

Posted by Laura on 01:08 PM July 22, 2011

Hi Laura, You can remove the earring from 3-year-old's ear(s) and it usually won't leave a mark. If one is in a good spot, leave that one if she doesn't mind. If the one is only off a tiny bit, then you have to wait longer to make sure the hole is completely closed before attempting a new hole. And, it may not be that big a deal to her.
Make sure to clean off the "removed" lobe with alcohol & Neosporin, and keep up the cleaning routine with the one you leave in. ~Janet

I have had problem-free pierced ears for over thirty years . . . until I received a lovely gift of diamond hoop earrings with a straight post. I have trouble putting them in, especially when it comes to finding their way out of the hole. I get the post in halfway, but then poke and prod to get them through, even though I do not have especially thick lobes. After wearing them for an evening, my lobes are red and tender. The problem may be the thickness of the post. (They are 18k gold, so I have ruled out the quality of the metal.) My regular earrings have a more slender post. I am now using alcohol and neosporin on my ears and am wearing earrings with a medium thick post to "train" my ears to accept a larger post. Is this a good strategy? Do you have other suggestions for me?

Posted by Denise Baker on 05:53 AM August 20, 2011

Hi Denise, You have already figured out the problem & the solution! Re-training your ears is great. If you can get someone to shave down & polish the diamond hoops' posts, that will help too. Make sure they are super clean before inserting them. All the best, ~Janet

Two months ago I got one of my 6 year old daughter ear re-pierced. I first got them pierced when she was 2 but they were uneven so I decided to wait until she was older to get one of them pierced over. When getting the left lobe done this time, my daughter jump a bit and the piercing seem to have went back into the same hole...what luck. SHe took it out and gave it another go. She hit the perfect mark....thank God. The 4 first weeks were fine and I cleaned and twist consistently but made the mistake of slacking off a bit after a month. I decided to take the it out at week eight to check on it. It hurt taking it out, was bleeding and looked like a fresh piercing. no odor or pus. I soak the earring in HP and cleaned her ears with it as well. I took her to the clinic and was told to I take it out for a couple of days "to let it rest"and use batricin and soap to clean it. She also gave he some oral antibiotics "in case infection was setting up. CONTINUED..........

I have read that you should not take out the earring if it is still healing. I have also read that some doctors and nurses don't know that. SO I am seeking advice from a piercing professional. I have some questions: Is plan saline okay instead of soap or alcohol?..the alcohol burns her. Should I take the earring out or keep treating it with bactricin and cleaning with anti-bacterial soap and saline? HOw often should I clean it? Is this piercing still considered a "new" piercing after 8 weeks? Can I switch out the earring for a one with a longer stem or leave the stud in? It seems tight and her lobe bruised a bit when I took out the stud to clean. She also told me that neosporin "should not be used". I could not get to my daughter regular doctor so I went to a clinic to see what to do. The nurse practioner seemed a little clueless at first. I literally had to ask her to give me some advice besides "take it out and let it rest for a few days". PLease help me!! Also the earring is gold.

Me Again...Please don't think I am nuts but I just feel so terrible about this whole earring thing. I wish I would have just let them stay uneven and let her decided what she wanted to do when she got older....
Anyway I went to a local jeweler and he told me to just switch out the post so it could breathe better. It is 14k. What do you think about that?Or should I just buy a new pair of gold earrings. Thank you so much for you help and patience lol!!!

My 2 year old daughter had her ears pierced on 4/17/2011. We never had any problems with them being infected. After eight weeks I bought here some sterling silver post earring to change from her starter 18kt ones. When I removed the starters, one of the backs of her ears had a scab like dot were the post went through. I thought it was fuzz or dirt so I effortlessly picked it off. It started to bleed but did not sem to be infected or painful. After I inserted her new earings I applied neosporin a few nights and never had anymore issues. A few weeks later, we noticed the back to the new earring was missing. Out of fear of them closing up we put her starter earrings back in. Now weeks later I noticed that this red scabby thing is back on her ear between the earring back and her ear lobe. I have started to apply peroxide to the backs of her ear. To hopefully get rid of this scabby thing. There is still no other signs of infection. Do you have any suggestions

Hi, My 9yrs old had her ears pierced about 4 weeks ago. She hasn't had any problems until last night. She had a hair caught behind the earring. She tried to sort it out herself. Her daddy heard her scream in the bathroom, went in to her and she had pulled the hair which had pulled the earring into her pierced hole. He pushed the earring back out from behind and there was some pus and a tiny bit of bleeding. When I got home, the ear was a little swollen and the earring had started to sink back inside. I cleaned it with the solution we was given and there was still a tiny bit of bleeding.
This morning her earring was back inside the hole again and it's still a little swollen. I cleaned it again, but I'm wondering if I should take the earring out to survey the damage or take her to a Dr or will it heal ok on it's own if I just continue to clean it. She's really worried she might have to let it heal and then get it re-pierced.

Everything was good until tonight when I took them out to clean them and put earrings back into them. The right one had no issues but the left hold was swollen like a hard marble-tyle feeling and was filled with puss but the hole was still accessible. So before I went to be I put the earring into it and now the swelling is gone..whats going on? thanks

Hi Janet, I got my ears pierced at you in early June. About three months ago. Would I be able to wear light light feather earrings (dangly)? They are very light because they are a feather and have a back even though it's not a stud. Thx, Natasha

Posted by Natasha on 09:46 PM August 29, 2011

    Dear Annette, Jennifer, Toni, Pari,
I'm so sorry I was out of town & couldn't answer you quickly.
Strangely, sometimes only one ear will have an issue! Sometimes germs get in or there is an allergic reaction that causes bleeding, swelling, or a little ball. The most important thing is to keep the ear free of germs. If it's bacitracin, or alcohol, or warm salt water, all are good... whatever is comfortable. Neosporin does work!
If you can remove the stud, clean it and the ear very well. Then leave it in.Twice a day is good for the regular clean/twist routine. The issues will disappear soon.
Silver is not always good right after the piercing. Often the posts or backs are base metal! A 14K or 18K post is best, and it should have room to breathe & twist... sometimes if it is too tight, the earring can be swallowed up by the ear!! Dig it out, clean everything, & put a plastic disk between the ear & the backing. (I can send you some)
Always clean ANY earring before inserting! ~Janet

Hi Natasha! Yes, you can wear light dangly feathers if the wire is sterling silver or gold or gold-filled. Just clean them and your ear first & don't push the earring back on too tight. Have a great summer~ Janet

It seems like the back of the ear has a bigger hole then the front hole. Its also been kind of tender and hurts every so often. Ive been taking good care of them. Also I put neosporin in the left ear. But the back hole is still bigger then the front hole. What should I do? Please comment back.

Hi!! I got my ears pierced six weeks ago and last night I put in new earrings. I had to have my mom help me take them out and she made my right ear bleed (and also broke my earring lol). How long should I wait to put different ones in and is there a easier way to take the metal backings out? I am wearing rubber backings now, since I had so much trouble with the metal ones, but I can't remove them.

Posted by Kimberly on 09:55 AM September 06, 2011

Hi Jman, The back hole should close down more with the daily Neosporin. It could be an infection, so it should fix that too. (Keep clean!) Do your twisting and future gauging after a shower to prevent uneven stretching. Often a person's one ear reacts differently, so don't worry too much. If you still have problems, ask the place where you got the gauging earrings - are they surgical steel? They should not be porous material like acrylic. Let me know,~Janet

Posted by Janet on 07:36 AM September 07, 2011

Hi Kimberly, Usually 6 weeks is long enough, but sometimes 7 or 8 is necessary, cuz it shouldn't bleed. Make sure you still do the daily cleaning/twisting routine for 1 more month, and then once every week for a while. Also, make sure the rubber backings aren't on too tight! They need room to breathe. The earrings need to be moving freely before they are ready to change to new ones.
To remove the metal backings, she needs to get her fingernails inside the front & back earring parts, elbows straight out, and yank apart!
    Please write me back, ~Janet

Posted by Jman on 03:53 PM September 08, 2011

Hi Jman, I'm glad it's better! As long as you keep up the clean/twist routine, those should be ok. Wood is porous, so make sure those periodically move within your ears too. Thanks for writing! : )

Hi Janet, What an incredibly helpful resource your blog is! My 5 yr old daughter had her ears pierced 3 mo ago. We cleaned with a benzalkonium chloride solution and turned daily for 8 weeks and had no problems. About a month ago, we started cleaning less- maybe once a day or every other day- and one or the other of the earlobes has been infected about half the time over the past month. The holes are usually worse in the morning and sometimes bleed. She is still using the 14K gold starter earrings. Should I buy different earrings? Should she sleep in something other than post earrings? You mention plastic disks in your responses to other posters. What are these? I'd greatly appreciate your advice. Thanks!

    Hi janet,
I recently pierced my own ears about 3 weeks ago. Everything was fine till today, I woke up with it feeling swollen so i turned it twice and it was fine. Then i was wrapping my hair and the brush ran across it. I figured it popped . Which it did. So I took the piercing out and squeezed it and a yellowish white puss came out. Then blood came out so i took my sisters gold earring and tried to put it in but it wont go in. Most websites said its not infected but i dont kno what to do. I cleaned it with alchol and now im letting it air out I NEED HELP ASAP . Please im scared

Posted by Kimberly Jackson on 02:50 PM September 24, 2011

Hi Joanna, Some people take longer for their holes to "mature." She should be cleaning still every day. Sometimes it's a reaction to the metal, but if your daughter had no problems the 1st 8 weeks, then it could be a contact-related infection. I would say to remove the starter posts, thoroughly clean out her ear lobes (with the alcohol & NeoSporin creme) & buy her lightweight dangle earrings on 14 kt. gold fish-hooks. This will get more air to the holes, but push on rubbery or gold stoppers so they don't slip out of her ears. She can sleep in these. [The plastic disks I mentioned are for people whose ear lobes tend to swallow up the earring backings! You put the disk between the ear & the backing.] Remind her to keep her fingers clean! Let me know how it goes, ~Janet

Posted by Janet on 06:12 AM September 26, 2011

Hi Kimberly, Yes, it is infected, & you did the right thing to clean it. Try to push a CLEAN earring into the hole. If it goes thru, keep doing the cleaning/twisting routine every day for 6 more weeks. Even if it seems closed, you need to keep doing the alcohol & NeoSporin until the infection goes away. After 6 months you can safely re-pierce it. Make sure your earrings are not costume jewelry. Let me know what happens, ~Janet

Hi GP, You can take them out at 2 months. The hole gets smaller the day after you remove them. Don't go without any earrings in your ears or they could close up! Put a dot of NeoSporin or vaseline on the earring post to help it get into the hole. ~Janet

Posted by Vanessa Ledesma on 10:17 PM September 28, 2011

    Hi Vanessa,
When you take out the piercing earrings that usually have thicker posts, the ear hole closes down a little. So when you put them back in, it's harder to twist. The bleeding also shows that you need more cleaning time because you may have some bacteria, so they weren't ready. NeoSporin takes care of that. Just keep up the cleaning/twisting routine for another 2 weeks, and your earlobes should be matured. ~Janet

hi there, i had my second lobe piercing 6 weeks ago today. I have waited and cleaned my ears as suggested. Today i took out the earring they pierced it with and when i went to put another one in, it caused me pain. I managed to get it in the front fine, but when i went to push it through the back i got like a stinging pain. Is this normal? i don't remember having it with my first piercing. I am too frightened to take out the other one today in case it is the same. Please reply asap :) thankyou

Posted by Kim on 01:49 PM October 03, 2011

    Hi Kim,
It seems like it's not "ready" yet. 6 weeks is not always enough. It could be slightly infected in back. Make sure you get the NeoSporin into the holes in back also, and only use 14 kt. or 18 Kt. gold for these next earrings...with a straight post. And aim carefully! ~Janet

I was pierced in my belly button with the STUDEX gun for an instructional video in Redondo Beah California at 700 n. pch suite 300
redondo beach, ca 90277, a spa, and it went very wrong. The cartridge did not disengage correctly and the entire instrument was stuck on my body. Fred Safford , the one who is responsible for the production & legalities on this devie actually came at me with a pair of pliers to try to "ply" the piercing out of my skin. They actually have the entire event on video. This was so terrifying and the other part of the staff contined to use tweezers & a screwdriver to get the piercing loose. My belly button was infected immediately and I contacted the owners asap, but they have put me off for over 6 months & I have thousands of dollars in doctor bills & mutalation to my body. I am a dancer & model so this has greatly affected my work. I will make sure I do what it takes to stop anything like this from every happening again & I will continue to get restitution.

Posted by Ashley on 01:41 PM October 05, 2011

Hi Ashley, You can start to wear lightweight hoops 2 months after your 6-week training period is over. Be sure to clean the earrings before inserting them into your earlobes. Aim carefully thru the hole! ~Janet

Dear Kat, I am so sorry this happened to you! I don't know why anyone would do use the Studex Ear Piercing gun for a belly button piercing! I have researched this, and nowhere does Studex promote its tools for navels. Look up the keywords for Studex, and all you see are words related to EAR piercing.
You definitely have an issue with the people in Redondo Beach - they were 1st: wrong to use this tool for a navel piercing, and 2nd: to use (probably) unsterilized pliers, tweezers, and screwdriver on you!
I have never caused an infection in my clients from properly piercing EARS with the Studex gun. Call the BBB and report the improper usage there.
    Best of luck, ~Janet

I got my ears pierced about three months ago and am experiencing some difficulties with the piercings healing. The piercings in my ears have lymph fluid everyday. I was wondering how I treat this, so that my ears will heal faster?? My piercings are not infected because they don't hurt and i'm very careful in making sure that my earrings are clean before i put them into my ears. Also I sleep with my earrings at night. I was wondering if there are any remedies to treat this lymph fluid that I'm experiencing with my ear piercings?? If there is any help or advice, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

    Hi Janet,
Your blog is so helpful. Thank you for actually replying to the comments. I got my ears pierced 7 weeks ago at Claire's. Today, I took the studs out and put in different earrings. The left side was fine, but I had some difficulty on the right side. Turns out the hole is not properly aligned and slightly angled to the right, making it difficult to go in. I was poking straight through and feel like I caused an extra wound by doing so because there was bleeding. I asked my roommate to put it in so now there are earrings in both ears (which is good to prevent closing up) but I wonder if the bleeding should be of concern because there is still blood right now. I am afraid to take the right side out because I am afraid that will make it bleed even more... Should I just clean with the antiseptic and leave them in? I look forward to your advice. Thanks!

Hi! Nearly 7 weeks ago I got my ears pierced (with 14k white gold) and I am not sure if I should remove them yet. The right one has given me no problems at all. But, the left one still has a little bit of soreness. No pain, fluids, nor swelling that I can tell. Just some sensitivity, such as when I try to sleep on my left side. Also, I notice after I clean or twist it, it can feel a little itchy for a few seconds. Do I need a few more weeks of healing before I remove the studs? Thanks!

    Posted by T on 07:07 AM October 08, 2011

Hi Heather, The lymph fluid sounds like a metal allergy. Try some hypo-allergenic surgical steel earrings or 18kt. gold. Are you still doing the cleaning/ twisting routine? Sleeping in the earrings is fine. Try a hot salt-water cotton-ball soak: surround your earlobe with the cotton-ball or washcloth for a few minutes each nite. ~Janet

Posted by Janet on 01:41 AM October 10, 2011

Hi Winnie, Sorry for the delay. You actually answered your own question correctly! Many people have one earlobe healing faster than the other. Often one lobe is thicker than the other (more skin to heal), or it could have gotten germs in it. Yes, you may have poked it to bleed, but that will heal too - if you leave the earrings in for 1 to 2 more weeks, and continue the alcohol/NeoSporin twist every day with clean fingers. Let me know how it goes, ~Janet

Posted by Janet on 01:51 AM October 10, 2011

Hi Ton, You are not alone. Many people have one ear that needs more healing time. Try to sleep on the right side. With clean finger, take the earring out & clean it really well, put NeoSporin creme on the post before putting it back in. Try the hot salt-water soak - dip a cotton-ball or washcloth in the mix, and surround your ear with it for a few minutes, every other day.
I would say 1 to 2 more weeks with cleaning & gentle twisting. Then try 14kt. yellow gold earrings instead. Let me know, ~Janet

Posted by Janet on 02:02 AM October 10, 2011

Thanks much! I just took the earring out for the first time (the backing did not want to cooperate! lol). I soaked it in alcohol while I wiped my ear lobe with the antiseptic solution that was provided for me by the store that pierced it. After drying both my lobe and the earring, I applied the Neosporin cream along the post and put it back in. It stung quite a bit at first. After about 15 seconds, it felt fine, though very red. Tomorrow I will start the salt water soaks and look for some 14k gold studs. I will let you know how it goes! :)

I’ve had my ears pierced for 6 weeks and currently have been changing my earrings to different studs. I would like to know, why can't I substitute my earrings to dangly earrings earlier than six months and, what happens if I do swap them out for a dangly pair of earrings???

Posted by Ruth Hansen on 07:47 PM October 14, 2011

Ruth, the reason you don't swap your studs for dangly earrings is because your hole may not fully be healed and putting hanging earrings in could make the hole bigger and stretch/tear it.

    Hi Janet,
I got my ears pierced mid-August--I am in my 30's. I have the original piercing earrings in, 14K gold, and have never taken them out. I was doing fine for the first five weeks or so, and then both my ears became infected. It has been several weeks since then and I thought they were getting better, but now they seem worse. I have a red bump with a white center next to the backings on each ear (one is worse than the other), and the backings stick to my earlobes unless they are wet. The bumps hurt when I apply pressure, and the piercings are oozing a bit of pus/blood. I have been cleaning several times a day or more with HP and turning the earrings with each cleaning. Aside from seeing my doctor (which I plan to do), do you have any advice on getting the infection to clear? And--if the problem is that I need to switch to pure gold earrings, can/should I change my earrings before the infection clears? I am past the 6-week training period. Thank you very much!

Posted by Katie on 05:24 PM October 16, 2011

Hi Janet! Just wanted to let you know that my left ear is almost healed! After about a week of using salt water, I can no longer feel any soreness. The only difference now is its still slightly itchy when I twist it, but even that is significantly less than before. Next week, I will try switching them out.

    THANKS AGAIN!!

    Posted by T on 08:03 AM October 19, 2011

Hi Ashley, It's ok to wear a swim cap as long as it doesn't put any pressure on the earring either while swimming or taking it on & off. Just be careful; it will be fine.

Posted by Janet on 07:11 PM October 19, 2011

Hey Ruth, Ashley is right. But if the dangly earring is VERY light weight, and the post or long wire is straight (so you don't "confuse the hole" while trying to insert it), it will be ok. ~Janet

Posted by Janet on 07:14 PM October 19, 2011

Boy, Katie, that is really sad! First: many people tend to forget to clean the earlobes after the 6 weeks. You have to keep it up at least once a week- they can still get bacteria! Hydrogen Peroxide is not the best thing - try the 91% alcohol & NeoSporin - that really works, twice a day with clean fingers! Also, apply a hot salt-water soaked washcloth around the earlobe at night. I would switch out the earrings very quickly for 14 to 18 kt. gold posts. Keep up the routine every day for 2 more weeks. Don't let them close up! Let me know,~Janet

Posted by Janet on 07:24 PM October 19, 2011

Thanks T, for writing me back. I'm using you as a role model cuz you followed my directions & it's working! Keep up the twisting , even later on 1 x a week, so the earring doesn't ever get stuck in there. Better karat Gold or Platinum will stop the itching. Best wishes, ~Janet

Posted by Audrey on 10:55 AM October 22, 2011

Hi Audrey, Your small earlobes are not the problem. It's really a 6- or 7-week responsibility now with awareness focusing on cleanliness. Print out a copy of my after-care advice at the top of this page, and you'll be fine. Do the cleansing / twisting once or twice a day, and keep your fingers clean & away from your ears. ALWAYS clean new pairs of earrings before inserting them, & also clean old ones that have been sitting around. ~Janet

Hi, ive had my ears pierced for a week now would i be able to take out my piercing for an hour or will it close up?

Posted by Trista on 04:05 PM October 27, 2011

I had my ear lobes piercing approximately 2 month ago. I recently switched earrings to 18kt gold and they were fine for the first few weeks. One started to hurt a couple of days ago, but I left it just in case I had accidentally pulled on it. I took it out today to give it a clean because I thought there may have just been some dirt or something in it. After I cleaned it I tried to put the earring back in but it wouldn't go through at all. It was extremely painful and bled a lot. When I felt it there was a large, hard lump where the hole is. I can't get any type of earring back in whatsoever. What should I do?

Posted by Emma on 06:34 PM October 27, 2011

Hey Trista, The training period is 6 WEEKS for a reason. The holes close up within 1 hour on most people, until near the 6 weeks. Get some clean nylon fishing line and push it thru with clean fingers... tie a knot. That should hold it for an hour. Be careful putting the trainers back in; the hole tends to get smaller in that hour. Good luck! ~Janet

Posted by Janet on 08:33 PM October 29, 2011

Hi Emma, Any time you feel something hurting, it's usually a sign of infection or irritation. Bleeding is an infection. Some earlobes get lumps, which will usually go away with time. I always tell people to keep up the cleaning routine longer than 6 weeks. Some earlobes take longer to "mature" completely.
You may have to let it close up and start over... but get the alcohol & NeoSporin into whatever hole is left. Don't push into the lump. Clean your 18Kt. earrings well for the next time you switch them out. Let me know, ~Janet

Posted by Janet on 08:41 PM October 29, 2011

Thanks for your reply. I went to my piercer and he said just to keep it clean and dry and don't try to put earring back in and leave it for about 2 weeks. He will have a look at it when I go back and repierce it for me.

I recently pierced my thirds, but the problem my thirds are basically on my cartilage bone and I used a needle. It is sore, a bit red, and warm so I used salt water, claire's antiseptic, and neosporin, but it is still not getting any better. Also, I noticed I started forming small bumps around the hole. Is it infected?

    Hi Janet,
I pierced my ears about 8 - 9 years ago, and recently it has started to flare up a lot, especially the left ear. It gives me an infection (warm to touch, swelling, pus and some blood) every few months, whilst the right ear is completely fine. Is there anything I can do? I just had another flare up without any warning (generally it happens after I switch earrings for a few hours) and it is got pus and blood (a lot when I squeeze), I cleaned and soaked it a bit in salt water and placed 18K earrings in them to help settle it down. Is there anything I can do to make it not so sensitive? I also found a small piercing like hole above my piercing, it is like a 2nd piercing but it is about 1 - 2mm deep which I confuse with my actual piercing from time to time. Is that normal or should I get it checked out? It happened after my 18K earring pressed against it for a few months. Now it won't go away. I hate to say my left ear is driving me nuts now. Please help!

We iced and cleaned and it seemed to be getting better. I even had her at the doctor and they said it was not infected, and not around the piercing, so they weren't concerned. Last night, it was swollen again and screams when I try to clean it. What could this be and how to resolve it? Thanks!

However, the hole has gotten bigger and my stud keeps sinking back into it which means the hole isn't closing up. Is it okay to put in some sleepers until the hole closes up a bit more ?

Posted by Candy on 02:52 AM November 20, 2011

Susie & Jen, sounds like an allergy to the metal. You must clean the earring hole with alcohol & NeoSporin! Also, clean the earrings off really well with alcohol. Best is to put in the 18 kt. Gold earrings.

Also, for Heidi too, infections can start at any time. If the ear is sensitive & you touch it with unclean fingers, it can get infected! If this happens, put ice on it before doing the cleaning / twisting routine Every Day til it gets better!

Posted by janet on 05:19 PM November 20, 2011

Hi Ty, dont get your ears pierced until your gym class is at least 5 weeks away for best results. Those holes could close up in 40 minutes if you are a quick healer or have thicker earlobes! You could go maybe 4 weeks if you have clear fishing line & the coach doesn't mind that.

I had my ears pierced by a professional with needles, I tried this way because I've had my ears pierced twice before with a gun and both times didn't work out and I had to let them close up.
It's been over a year now since having them done professionally but they STILL haven't healed and are very sore and irritated. It's not the metal because I have in surgical steel barbells and i've tried antiseptic creams prescribed by my doctor, nothing seems to help! Do you have any advice?

Posted by Rosie on 02:14 AM November 28, 2011

Hi Candy, Your ears seem to like the salt water, so wrap your earlobes in a hot salt-water soaked washcloth. Then try to get some earrings that have longer posts, not as tight, so they have room for air. Or yes, get the sleepers.

Posted by Janet on 01:59 PM November 28, 2011

Hi Asha, You only have to clean & twist 1-2 times a day, and you don't have to take them out to clean them! It may be too irritating right now. Are your fingers super clean? Make sure there is not a lot of NeoSporin build-up inside the earring backings... that collects bacteria too. You may have to try 18 kt. gold, if it's an allergic reaction. Let me know, ~Janet

Posted by Janet on 02:06 PM November 28, 2011

Hi Richard, It sounds like she got it infected. Holes start closing from the back, so if your want to push the earring all the way thru, put ice on her ear in back& front, and put NeoSporin on the tip of the earring post & push thru. If it hurts, you may have to clean it & let it close up. If there is an abscess, call the doctor! ~Janet

Posted by Janet on 02:13 PM November 28, 2011

Hi Rosie, it's not the needle or the gun. It is an allergic reaction to metal. If you can get some 18 kt. gold earrings, either hoops or posts, that may work... or Platinum. You can put a little cortisone cream on the irritated part of your ear, but not into the holes. Have you tried NeoSporin or Bacitracin? or hot salt water compresses?

I am 17 and i have recently had the desire to get my ears pierced for the first time. The problem is soccer starts in 5 weeks and would last until May. At first I would only have to take the earrings out for about an hour a week, but starting in February I would have to take them out for at least 2 hours each day. My question is, how quickly do the holes close up? Would it really be that big of a deal to take them out if I made sure they were kept clean? If they've been in for 5 weeks and I take them out for an hour at games does this mean that the healing process will start over? Also, how high are the chances of infection? Thanks so much, your blog is very helpful!

Unfortunatelyyy, the holes are really close together, and I hate it. ='/ I trusted the girl who did it, but every time I look at my ears I hate how close they are. Even when I wear small earrings in both holes, the earrings touch.
My question is, if I leave earrings out of the second hole, will they close so that I can get it re-pierced a little higher?? I've seen a lot of people on the web say that holes never close sometimes. =// Now I'm wishing I had taken them out as soon as I got them done instead of telling myself I was fine with them when I wasn't.

Posted by noodle on 02:41 PM December 01, 2011

HI Jess #1, Sometimes at 5 weeks the holes are mature, but sometimes it takes 7 weeks! If you can find some clear fishing line to push thru & tie a knot, or get those plastic pierced ear protectors (from Claire's) if your coach will let you.
When you take earrings in & out, there can be more chance of infection from unclean fingers or earrings touching something. The healing process won't need to start over if the holes don't close down during those hours. I always say to put a drop of NeoSporin on the tip of anything before inserting into earlobes. Good luck!

Posted by Janet on 10:56 AM December 02, 2011

Hi Jess #2, You can take them out & they will close up eventually. Make sure your next ear piercer marks the spot, & aims the hole away from the old bad one. I'm sure you will be happy after it's done right! =)

Posted by Janet on 11:06 AM December 02, 2011

Hi Noodle, Some people are prone to balls or keyloids. If you've been keeping things clean, you may have an allergy to that type of earring. Try switching to a higher quality earring, & see a doctor if that doesn't work.

I had my daughter's ears pierced almost 2 months ago and her right appeared to have healed great. Her left would rotate without traction but blood mixed with puss would come out of the back. I cleaned it with alcohol instead of the saline solution they gave me, and now that seems to have worked. Now her right is all of a sudden bleeding and pussing. She doesn't appear to be in pain and neither are swollen. T studs are 14k white gold. I haven't changed her studs nor have I taken them out. Does this sound like an allergy? Or we're they not fully healed? Thank you x

Posted by Theresa on 08:50 AM December 07, 2011

Hi Theresa, 14 kt. white gold does have nickel or silver in the mix. The pus sounds like an allergic reaction, or she got some infection from fingers or buildup behind the ears. Take them out & clean them with alcohol really well, or use either 14Kt. or 18 Kt. or surgical steel studs. I like using alcohol & NeoSporin the best for cleaning inside the earlobe holes. It sometimes takes cleaning (& twisting) them every day for 2 to 3 months! Keep me posted, ~Janet

Hi Janet, I had my first holes sewn up after 30 yrs because they were uneven and after 4mths had them repierced. I waited out the 8 weeks, with religious cleaning, before changing out the earrings to start wearing my fashion jewellery again. I've been wearing various types of fashion earrings for a week now and today I had to take them out because they were hurting a lot. When I removed them the holes were bleeding. I've never had a metal allergy and am wondering if it's possible to develop one after all this time or whether it's just due to the new piercings and requiring more time to heal. Am I going to be able to wear all my fabulous earrings again? Help.

Posted by Lesley on 02:10 PM December 08, 2011

Hi Lesley, Yes, you can develop a metal allergy at any age! Or you could have picked up an bacterial infection. Did you clean all the earrings before they went into your ears?? Did you check to see if any of the plating was coming off of the posts, to expose the base metal?
It can be that your new holes weren't ready yet, or that you need to keep up routine cleaning even after changing out to new earrings.
Stop wearing the costume earrings for now, and do more cleaning & Neosporin... but don't leave your holes empty or they will close up!
For many customers, I have changed just their posts from costume to real 14 Kt. gold or gold-filled, or even sterling silver....This way they can safely wear their "fabulous earrings!" ~Janet

I cleaned them with alcohol & put Neosporin on them. Now blood blisters keep forming next to the holes in back. I have done the same alcohol & Neo treatment but the blisters keep returning. I am tempted to just remove them and let her try again in a few years, but she is so sad! They don't hurt her, I am just worried that they will continue to be a problem and her infected. She has picked at it (looks like very chapped lips, peeling skin and red in the lobe area in back of ear). I put peroxide on them. What else can I do? I see alot of neosporin answers. Do you know what is causing the irritation that has caused the dryness and scabs(other than her picking at it) ? The front of her ears are fine, this is only in the back. Thanks for any help you can offer :)

Hi Janet! I got my ears pierced 9 weeks ago, and I took out my starters and now have a different pair of studs in. I really haven't had any problems with infection, although my right ear still seems to be sensitive and hurts when I touch it. Is that normal? Also, a few weeks ago I noticed that my right ear piercing is crooked, the back hole is way off to the side so I must go diagonal to put an earring in and when I wear earrings with a disc back, the disc shows. I know its not that big of a deal, people have told me its not noticable and I should let it go. Is there anything I could do? Repierce it? What do you think?

My daughter got her ears pierced yesterday, and she still has some pain. She had her ears pierced two times prior and we had to take them out because they kept getting infected, even though we did everything right. Is it normal to have some pain a couple days after a piercing?

Posted by PATTY on 07:14 PM December 21, 2011

Hi everybody, sorry I am late getting back to you all!!
Sharon, Most likely your daughter is getting irritated which causes her pick at them, which gets scabs. Remove them now, clean her ears & earrings, & get different backings that are solid 14 kt. or 18 kt. gold. The NeoSporin Cream is soothing, and will help. Or try Cortisone cream for a couple of days for the itching. Let me know, ~Janet

Posted by Janet on 07:02 PM December 24, 2011

H Kat, a crooked piercing has more skin to go thru, so it can take longer to heal, & will be more sensitive. If nothing has hit you in the ear to stretch out the hole, it may close up a little bit on its own, but if not, you can remove it & start over. A doctor can stitch it up if necessary & you have to wait & then re-pierce it. Otherwise, don't worry too much; use bigger silver or gold or gold-filled) backings instead of disks.

Posted by Janet on 07:07 PM December 24, 2011

Hi Patty, Some pain is ok after a few days, but after that there are some things to consider. Some people are just more sensitive to piercing or allergic to alloys. Have you tried different metals? Are these hypo-allergenic? Are you using the alcohol & NeoSporin? Try Bacitracin. Are you sure she is not absentmindedly touching her earlobes with dirty fingers or cell-phone? Change her pillowcase too & make sure the pillow is soft.

i took my earings out today after 6 months, the thing is i can't seem to put them back in. my sister can put them in but i wont be seeing her for a couple of days. i am worried my the holes will close up over night, will they? oh and also there is like watery blood come out of the holes sometimes if i add a bit of pressure i dont know whether i should be worried lol, they used too itch as well. what could be wrong?

Posted by sarah on 10:14 AM December 25, 2011

Hi Sarah, clean your ears really well with the alcohol & antibacterial creme. Chill your ears with an ice pack. Put some NeoSporin or vaseline on the earring tip before inserting, & push it thru. You could be reacting to the type of earring metal or an infection. Make sure your earrings are of good quality (not plated), & clean! Let me know how it works, Janet

Hello, My daughter will need to take her earrings out for a volleyall tournament. She will have had her ears pierced for 3 weeks and 4 days. Should we try to use a retainer? The tournament lasts all day.

Posted by Kris on 09:23 AM December 29, 2011

Hi Ashley, You have to be able to twist the earring post left & right (back & forth) in your ear, to get the solution inside the holes. But you should be able to feel the point of the post sticking out just a tiny bit in the back. If the backs keep falling off, sterilize a pair of needle-nose pliers & gently squeeze the loops of the earring backs closer together. With clean fingers, put it back on. Or go back to the store. ~Janet

Posted by Janet on 09:12 PM December 29, 2011

Hi Kris, If you can find a clear plastic retainer stud, clean it first before insertion. We have some & Claires has some "Pierced Ear Protectors". Or you can use clear fishing line; push it thru & tie a good knot. Her holes can close up in less than one hour! ~Janet

Thank you so much for your advise, I did go ahead and use something on my own since you didn't get back to me right away. I did what you advised (I am amazed I decided the right thing to do) took the earrings out put cortizone on the backs and stopped the cheap backings. Thanks so much for giving the correct advise to everyone!

You've given lots of great adivce so I am hoping you can help us. Four days ago my 6 year old had her ears peirced. Today, when she was cleaning her earrings, she accidentally pulled her starter stud out. I cleaned her ear and the stud and tried to put it back in. Unfortunately, I couldn't get it back in. She has nice thick ear lobes and it seemed like the middle of the hole had collapsed. Currently she is wearing an earring in just one ear. She would like to get the other ear re-pierced? Is this a good idea? How long should we wait to do a re-piercing? Are there any reisks with re-piercing her ear? We'd appreciate any adivce you have.

Hi you have given me really good advice and i would like to thank you. I have another question i have had my ears peirce 9 days and i clean them 3 times a day as i was told. My right ear hurts when i touch it and my left one doesnt. My ear only hurts when i go to pull the back. Is that jusr normal its not red or crusty so i dont think its infected but idk. Plz help thnks

Posted by Ashley on 04:23 PM January 04, 2012

Hi Tessa, I have re-pierced many people who wanted the same exact spot, & they are fine. You may have had some scar tissue inside, & that would hurt a little more. Many people have one earlobe that takes longer to heal. (Sometimes it is thicker.) Keep it sanitary; also do a warm salt-water washcloth soak, & it should be ok. ~Janet

Posted by Janet on 11:42 PM January 04, 2012

Dear Mary K, (Sorry I'm late!) See if you can see the hole in front & in back. If you trust the ear-piercer to get it into the exact spot & angle, it can be done right away before it closes. Or, if you can put ice on her earlobe, sanitize her earlobe the piercing stud... just push it thru! If not, you should wait about 3 months & put alcohol & NeoSporin in the hole now so it can close without infection. I recommend getting pierced with the thicker Studex surgical steel training posts which can't fall out so easily! Let me know, ~Janet

Posted by Janet on 11:53 PM January 04, 2012

Hi Ashley! Ok, I think that only 1 to 2 times a day is enough to do the cleaning / twisting routine..it can get irritated. Often one earlobe is more sensitive than the other, or takes longer to heal. Not red or crusty is great. Is the earring moving freely & not too tight? What do you mean "pull the back?" Write me back~ Janet

Posted by Janet on 12:00 AM January 05, 2012

Hi i mean like when i try to pull it back because its to tight. I know why it hur. While i was cleaning the ear the back didnt feel right to me and one side of the ear ring back was pushed into my ear. My mom took it off and sanatized it and fixed it or something. I got it back on but idk if its normal to bend i havent been laying on it or anyhard blows have been on the back.

Hi. I just got my ears pierced last week. And I'm thinking of removing the studs and putting in new ones immediately. Can I do that?

Posted by jeanette on 07:15 AM January 07, 2012

    Hi Janet.
I've had my cartilage priced for 2 almost 3 months should I be worried that's it still hurts and is still a little swollen? I am still cleaning it about 2times a day.
I was also wondering how long I need to wait till I can wear curved hoop earrings?

Posted by Kalee on 11:19 AM January 08, 2012

Hey Ashley, It's ok, just make sure that it isn't too tight - it can start digging into the back of your earlobe, & that does hurt. Check to see that the post sticks out just a tiny bit at the back. All the best, ~Janet

Posted by Janet on 01:59 PM January 09, 2012

Hi Jeanette, Please don't remove the studs!! Your ears need time to get used to the piercings. By cleaning & twisting the earrings a little, the hole will stay open enough to insert new ones. Otherwise, your holes can close up so fast!! Try to wait a little longer. ~Janet

Posted by Janet on 02:16 PM January 09, 2012

Hi Kalee, Try cleaning only once a day. Are you using an antibiotic like NeoSporin, or Bacitracin, or a hot salt-water soak? They help. Cartilage always takes longer to "mature." 3 months for cartilage is standard. Make sure there's no buildup inside the earring backings- they should be cleaned out with a toothpick. Hi Janet,

I went and got my ears pierced on my ear lobes, and cartilage back in July. Since then, the piercing on my ear lobes have been fine. Then this past weekend I decided to switch out one of my ear lobe earrings. It was ok for two days, then yesterday I noticed during work, that my ear hurt where I had switched them out. I got home, and cleaned it with cleaning solution, but when I went to clean the back side of my ear, a white/yellow liquid had oozed out from the earring. I immediently took it out, and switched to my original gold earring. It stings to the touch, but the redness has gone down, and there isn't as much liquid coming out. Could I be allergic to the metal? It was some sort of silver. Do I need to just keep cleaning it?

Posted by Anna on 10:38 AM January 11, 2012

Hi Anna, Yep, sounds like you are allergic to the metal. Some "silver" earrings are good Sterling Silver, and some are base metal with Nickel. If you really love the earrings, you can have someone laser weld gold, gold-filled, or Sterling Silver posts on them. Otherwise, don't wear them for about 6 months & try again. Just wear gold or gold-filled to be safe. ~Janet

    Hi Janet,

Thank you for your quick response, and advice! My ear still hurts a little, and it just has some crusty stuff where my ear backing is. Should I be cleaning the affected area more than once a day? Do you recommend a hot salt soak, or just the neosporin? I've only ever used the cleaning solution the piercer gave me.

Posted by Anna on 12:59 PM January 12, 2012

Hi Anna, Try the best home remedy - first Isopropyl Alcohol & then NeoSporin. If you can clean out the good earring backings really well in alcohol, that will help. Once a day is ok, but 2x for the 1st 3 days.

Posted by Janet on 01:02 PM January 13, 2012

Hi Caelin, Yours are too new. If you can leave them in for another 2 months, that will be best. Some people's holes close up after only a few hours! If it's uncomfortable, we sell piercing sleepers- they are plastic. Sleep on a soft pillow.

Posted by KaRuiz on 09:27 PM January 13, 2012

Hey! So I just got my second piercings on both of my ears just above my first holes, on my ear lobs. The day of and a few days after they were fine. But now they are a little sore when I go to clean them and they're just a little swollen. (There is no redness or crust) Is this normal? I don't really know what to think about it. Because I read on my box of earrings and solution that I got said if swelling or soreness occurs remove earrings. But i really don't want to lol. Oh & how long should it last until its not a good thing anymore? Thanks hope to hear from you soon!

Posted by jordan on 02:16 PM January 17, 2012

Hi KaRuiz, Sometimes certain earlobes take longer to mature. Maybe yours are thicker, and that is a normal reaction.

Hi Ashley, Your sensitivity could be normal too. Put some ice on the swelling, and use alcohol & NeoSporin for now. If that bothers you, try a hot salt-water mixture on a washcloth. (after the ice) Only clean once or twice a day. .. try for a few more days this way or take them out & clean out the holes, & try again 6 few months. Let me know ~Janet

Posted by Janet on 02:48 PM January 17, 2012

Hi Lauren, First try it for a few hours & see how that goes. If there is no resistance & it goes back in smoothly, it should be ok for a day. A drop of vaseline or NeoSporin on the tip of the earring post will help it go back in straight.

Posted by Janet on 02:54 PM January 17, 2012

Hi Jordan, As long as the fish-hooks are made of solid gold or high quality Sterling Silver, and the posts are straight as they go thru your ear, and the earrings feel light-weight, you should be fine!

Posted by Janet on 02:58 PM January 17, 2012

Thanks, I am really excited to put in my earrings. I have been waiting to put them in since I got them.

When you just get your ears pierced do you need to take the earrings out to clean your ears? Or do you just clean around it?

Posted by Lisa on 06:40 PM January 17, 2012

I got my ear lobes pierced for the first time in October with stainless steel studs. I followed all the cleaning rules, and never seemed to have a problem. I waited 8 weeks to take them out for the first time. When I took them out, my lobes bleed, and it hurt very bad to put them back in. I waited another 2 weeks to take them out again..and the same thing happened. I waited another 2 weeks to take them out again, and it bled even worse. I don't know if I should keep them out, or put them back in. How come my ears are not healed yet? Am I allergic to stainless steel?

Posted by KF on 04:45 PM January 18, 2012

Hi Lisa, The earrings should stay in your ears for at least 6 weeks, and you clean around them... but get the alcohol or solutions into the ear hole & twist the earrings back & forth.

Posted by Janet on 08:45 PM January 18, 2012

Hi KF, Oddly enough, you may be allergic to them... but usually it wouldn't be bleeding, but yellower liquid. Have you been keeping up the antibiotic creme? Change the earrings to 14 kt. gold posts, and do the cleaning and antibiotic (like NeoSporin) once a day for 2 more weeks. Let me know, ~Janet

The back is on way too tight and i can't get the front of the earing to loosen it. when i tried some puss came out and it bled from the front and back. It hurts and i would like to know what i can do to loosen the earing and still have pierced ears.

Hi Cassandra, Put an ice pack on it & get someone to help you loosen or remove the earring right away! Then clean out the hole with the alcohol & NeoSporin or other antibiotic... it sounds like an infection. Try to get the cleaned earring back into the proper spot. Keep up the cleaning & antibiotic... good luck!

I tired to put the earring back in after 3 hours of searching for it and I disinfected it but it don't go in now.. should I push it in or did the piercing already close up?.. can something be wrong if she's still so sensitive of her ears?..

Posted by Miriam on 01:00 AM January 21, 2012

Hi Miriam, The piercing hole can close up in an hour! The only type of earring that you should be getting is the one that is surgical steel (it can be 24 Kt. gold plated) from Studex or Caphlon. These do not fall out! They also have no nickel in them to react to. I think 3-year-olds are too young to have piercings. They often mess with their earrings, sometimes with dirty fingers, and act like "drama queens"... I would let them close up & wait til she's older.

My 8 year old has had her ears pierced for 5 months. We keep the steel posts in at all times unless she is playing basketball. A couple months ago, her left ear began giving us problems. It is difficult to re-insert the post after leaving it out for a couple hours. It's hard to push it out of the back, and sometimes bleeds a little. I put Neosporin on it, and the antiseptic I got from Claire's, but it seems to me that the posts are so small. When I got my own ears pierced 30+ years ago, I remember the posts being much fatter. Would it be advisable to try and find some studs with posts that are fatter? I don't know if this is the problem, but it seems likely to me. Comments?

Posted by Stacy on 02:58 PM January 28, 2012

    Hi Jeanette,
Pus is usually an allergic reaction or infection, and it turns to crusting. Try to get the antibiotic creme into the hole in back & front. If nothing changes after a few days, try a different metal (gold or sterling or surgical steel)

Posted by Janet on 08:27 AM January 31, 2012

    Hi Huey,
No, it takes about 6 weeks for the ear hole skin to "mature". The hole may close down quickly for you to get the new ones in. Keep doing whatever is working now .. no need for salt water :)

Posted by Janet on 08:31 AM January 31, 2012

    Hi Stacy,
Yes, Claire's earrings are usually too thin, but it sounds like it is an infection! Keep using alcohol daily & NeoSporin for a week...& twisting. Ears start to close up from the back, and a thicker post would be good, but it's hard to push thru - you really have to numb the ear with ice & "break thru." I can send you some, or maybe Claire's would sell you some. Get Studex or Caphlon brand only.

I had my 4 year olds ears pierced when she was 9 months, they where just fine. About a year later she lost one of the starter studs, every time I put new earrings in they swell up bleed and crust, I take them out clean her ears and everything goes back to normal. I put new ones in and it happens again, she's been without earring for quite sometime so I went to Walmart and bought some sterling silver ones and 3 days later they are swollen And one is bleeding, I took them out and cleaned them.
Any suggestions? I think the back may be getting on there to tight from sleeping maybe? Would small hoops be okay? Even at her age? I'm just frustrated she love earrings and I want to find a way to keep them in.

Posted by Amanda on 02:30 PM January 31, 2012

    Hi Amanda,
Sounds like she is sensitive to certain metals. Just use either 14 kt. gold or surgical steel earrings. Either the screw-back type or small hoops. 4-year-olds don't always keep their fingers away from their ears, sometimes they are dirty so they get infected. Walmart's earrings can possibly come from China, and not all that silver is high quality. Keep cleaning them once a day... then once a week. Use NeoSporin every other day til she's fine. Let me know, ~Janet

Hello I got my ears pieced about a week ago and when I was cleaning them it felt like one of the earrings was tighter than the other so I tried loosening the backing. When I did the earring came off it bled a little but not bad at all but when I grabbed my ear to put the earring back in a felt a bump next to where it was pierced. It doesn't hurt or anything and I read somewhere that I might be from sleeping on it and that is the side I sleep on since my cartilage was pierced on the other side I can only sleep on my right. I was just wondering if I should be concerned or if it's normal from irritation? Thanks.

Posted by Bria on 08:42 PM February 07, 2012

    Hi Maria,
Sometimes there is a little lump from the piercing reaction. If you keep the earrings & holes clean & moving freely, and sleep on a soft pillow (or sleep on your back), you should be fine. The bump should go away by the 6 week training period ending. Put antibiotic (NeoSporin cream) into the holes every week after the 6 weeks also.

Posted by Janet on 07:33 PM February 08, 2012

    Hi Bria,
Sometimes ears are sensitive for a few more days; they could be a little bit thicker earlobes, or you could be sensitive to the metal. Keep up the cleaning & twisting routine - only 1 or 2x a day. And Yes - NeoSporin cream helps. Let me know,~Janet

Posted by Janet on 07:39 PM February 08, 2012

You should NEVER put alcohol or hydrogen peroxide on any piercing! It is way too harsh and prolongs the healing. You're not even really suppose to soak them in it as it can mess up the jewelry, especially studs with gems on them. You should clean your piercings with sea salt soaks. Nor should you use Neosporin or Vaseline because it traps in bacteria, doesn't allow your piercing to breathe, and prolongs healing also. You shouldn't have the backs that Claire's puts on their earring because they trap bacteria also. Twisting them all the time is horrible to do, once again, prolongs healing and causes scar tissue. Most people are naive with this stuff because they get their ears pierced at Claire's with a piercing gun (also bad and unsanitary). They are not professional piercers. I have had many piercings and every actual professional piercer I've talked to would advice AGAINST everything you are telling these people. It really bothers me that you are misinforming these people!

Posted by bria on 08:40 PM February 08, 2012

    Bria,

Don't use alcohol or hydrogen peroxide. It prolongs healing. Use sea salt soaks or buy this product call H2Ocean. You can get it at any tattoo/piercing place.

Posted by Alex on 09:15 PM February 08, 2012

    Hi Alex,
I have been piercing ears for about 20 years, and my clients' success rates who follow my instructions are close to 100%!! (I get feedback and repeat visits from children & grandchildren of my clients.) You are right about a few things: Hydrogen peroxide is not good. Neither is Vaseline or NeoSporin OINTMENT - too oily & does not evaporate. That's why I recommend the CREAM. Also, I said if the alcohol is too drying, use sea salt soaks. And yes, Claire's employees are not true professionals and are not always sanitary! No backings should have base metal or plastic or anything that traps bacteria.
However, here is where I disagree~ The alcohol and twisting once a day does not cause scar tissue; in fact, this insures that the skin will not adhere to the piercing stud, and it cleans out residue from skin oils and soap, and kills the germs. We only use Surgical Steel studs, and the alcohol will not "mess them up." Our way is safe and clean. : )

Posted by Janet on 10:19 PM February 08, 2012

    Hi Bria,
Isopropyl alcohol is good. Or you can use a solution of warm sea-salt water on a washcloth, or buy what Alex recommends: H2Ocean. I'll have to check it out. (Remember~ clean fingertips!)

Posted by Janet on 10:33 PM February 08, 2012

    Janet,
The problem with alcohol is that it kills the good cells and causes prolong healing. I have 12 piercings including belly button and nose. You seem like you are knowledgable for the most part but it concerns me whether you are licensed and have actually taken the classes. I don't know if you just do ears or not either. The only thing you really need to clean them with is anti-bacteria soap or do sea salt soaks. I've learned this through experience and that I'm on my way to becoming a professional piercer. I'm sorry if it seemed I was attacking you, I love discussing this stuff and informing people.

After looking at your website I can see now that you are NOT a licensed professional piercer. I wish these people would research before taking their children to these places. You should NEVER pierce anything with a piercing gun. They aren't sanitary and can jam easily. Not only that, they push the skin aside rather than actually piercing through it. They cause so many irritations and infections. These are the places I tell people to stay away from, like Claire's. Also, it doesn't matter if the Vaseline is a cream it still doesn't allow the piercing to breathe. Ugh. I wish the government would regulate this stuff more.

    Hi,
I have had my ears pierced for almost 3 weeks and one of my ears is swelling up. It's not in pain, slightly warm, but not red. I bumped my ear against something the other day. What can I do to take the swelling down? I have 10 carrat gold studs, and it's only the left ear. I have been cleaning it with the Ear Solution every day, not taking them out, but using sterile q-tips and washing my hands, and twice a day. Is this normal swelling?
I am new at this so please help me out!

Hi. I posted yesterday and it looks like it didn't go through. My 10 year old daughter had her ears pierced at Claire's almost 5 weeks ago. At first we thought they were a tad high, especially on one ear. It is so slight and I didn't think it would bother us, but the more time went on, the more it did. Well, now she is worrying constantly about it and I'm thinking we should maybe let them close up and repierce them later. Will they close up since it's been almost 5 weeks? Will there always be a mark or will it completely heal? How long should we wait before repeircing them? Is it ok to repierce directly under the old piercing? We would just go ever so slightly below it. I just want my daughter to be happy and not have any regrets! I hope I hear back from you soon!! Thanks!

    Dear Alex,
My 20 years of excellent experience is more than your 12 personal body piercings. I only do ears, and my tool is sanitized and the earring is sharp and does pierce. Look at the large gauges you guys use - those shove & stretch the ear aside to get a larger hole. I have been polite with you, but you are being offensive. Do your piercings your way; I will stick with what works for over 1000 satisfied clients. Good day.

Do your research before you try to tell me I'm wrong. Go into any tattoo shop and tell them the information you are telling me. Look it up online, or anywhere. Piercing guns + alcohol = bad. Anyone who knows anything about piercings know that. Perhaps you just are not as passionate about it as I am.

Granted it's a blog, but this person works in a tattoo shop and knows what they are talking about. This is a CORRECT guide to taking care of a piercing. Good day.

    Hi Laura,
Bumping your ear can cause swelling. Make sure your earring backs are not pushed on too tight... the hole needs room to breathe. Put an clean ice pack against your earlobe. Also, once a day is better, not so irritating. Sometimes 10 Karat cause a reaction; it has more alloy in it than 14 Kt. does. Sleep on your right side if possible. Let me know if that works, ~Janet

    Hi Taryn,
It's ok to let the hole close up, but it may leave a little mark. I have repierced many earlobes near to the old holes with no problems. Best to wait at least 6 months before attempting a new hole. Make sure there is no little lump inside (scar tissue).
Clean out her earlobe hole to eliminate any infection, and check that every few days. She should be fine. Kids heal fast! ~Janet
