Winter Wildlife, Eagles, Moose, and Wolf Oh My....

    Posted 04:24 PM December 27, 2007

So far this winter, the wildlife have been out in force.  This is rather suprising since the snow had not really arrived until Christmas eve.  We finally got around 4-6 inches over the 24th-25th.  But the Wildlife are still out.

Just down the road from us we saw a lone wolf out looking for its Christmas feast.

The moose are regulars here as it is.  Now we are seeing more of the younger ones alone instead if with Momma, and they are a little more careful aroudn people and cars.  Hopefully this will lower the moose-car accidents in 2008.

The Bald Eagles that call this area home, have been out a lot.  We have what appears to be 2 breeding pairs around our property, and they love to sit on the trees out back right on the river.  Its wonderful to see them glide with easy up the river.  Sometimes driving down the road we will get and escort from an Eagle.  Twice so far ths fall, the eagle had dinner with it.  Once a fish and once a small mammal.

The weather here is not bad like a lot of people think.  Having spent many years in Mn, we find the temps to be on average higher in the winter that it was in central Minnesota.  Check out weather underground or the weather channel to see our curent weather, just use zip 99669 or you can also do it on yahoo, msn, excite, etc...

The Photography is great right now as well.  Kevin is using his Canon 1D Mark III most the time and says its working flawlessly.  He also uses a Canon 40D as well, and it also takes great picts. So far his workshops have been very popular and he is looking to expand them as well.  He is working on a Winter Photography section of his website, so make sure to visit it.  His site is http://www.PhotoTourAlaska.com   You can see some of them on our Online Photo Gallery of Alaskan Wildlife, Landscapes and more, at  http://AkPhotos.zenfolio.com/

Enjoy and Happy wildlife viewing.  We are open in the winter as well for those that are looking for a great and comfy place to stay.  We often have snow-machiners in as well as couples/families visiting for various events.

    Take care

3 New Recipes, great for the holidays!!!

    Posted 07:52 PM December 04, 2007

Hi all, well we posted a new section on our website, www.KenaiRiverHideAway.com or www.KRHBB.com for the easy way to type.  Its a Recipe section.  We will be adding a few recipes each month that we enjoy here at the B&B.  THey will range form some of the wonderful Breakfasts or snacks we may serve here to our wonderful guests, or to some of the recipes we enjoy ourselves, and want to share with outehrs so they can enjoy them with their friends and family as well.

This month We have added a Wonderful Smoked Salmon Artichoke Dip.  It is wonderful!!!  We added roasted Garlic to it when we took it over to a friends wedding get together this weekend and it was gone in record time!

Next is a dessert you will enjoy and has the feeling of the season to it.  Pumpkin Cheesecake!  It will melt in your mouth and maybe nudge that pumpkin pie over when it comes time for who wants 2nds of dessert!

Third we have a wonderful main course.  We had it the other night and I took the leftovers and had a Dynamic sandwich the next day for lunch!  Its Crab meat stuffed Halibut!  The stuffing is also very good other tihings BTW.  We use a very similar stuffing for our Stuffed mushrooms, except we only use crab in it for special occasions...  :)

Give these three ne recipes a try and enjoy.

For those of you that read Fish Alaska Magazine, you will also be able to read and see the Smoked Salmon Artichoke Dip in the January issue, as it is the Recipe of the month, and we are so happy it was selected for that honor!

I hope to add a few more recipes before the holidays and my photo load goes up.  I have also updated the website in general and will be doing so more thru-out the winter, and have added a lot more photos to it, spread thru-out the entire site, so check it all out.  I even added a few HI Res files you can download and print, as they are print ready, and listed on the bottom of the Photos Page.

Thanks and Seasons Greetings from the Pattersons

Bear in the yard and First Snow

    Posted 05:39 PM October 18, 2007

This past week was an exciting one.  We had our first real snow fall of the season and it was about 3 inches which lasted for a little over a day.  The big fluffy flakes were great to see, and a sign that winter is coming.  The Salmon are still in the river, as my son, the Photographer, was out fishing and last 2 silvers last week as wll.  He did catch and release a very nice Rainbow trout.  Most people dont realize that the Keani River also has great Trout fishing, along with the world famous Salmon.  Some great Steelhead are caught on this river as well.

    Then on Sunday morning we had an Eagle on our dock several times as a fish washed up on shore.  Then that evening about 10pm we had a bear come up the bank and into the back yard.  Caught us off guard as we were actually tossing out some popcorn over the railing when we saw it.  Scared it off so our new dog would be safe.  The tracks of the bear are rather large and lead all the way up the drive way;

But today its a wonderful peaceful fall day.    We will be working on redoing and updating our website over the next few weeks, and add our recipe and newsletter sections to it as well.  We are very proud and Happy to have one of our favorite recipes selected by Fish Alaska magazine and be published in the Jan. issue.  We will also have that wonder smoked salmon dip as well as a great fall cheesecake listed on our website, so make sure to check it out.

The REDS (Red or Sockeye Salmon) are IN!!!

    Posted 10:42 PM July 23, 2007

Well the REDS are in.  We have had several taken from our dock everyday for the last 5 days now.  Even our 16yr old helper(grandson) from Mn, Zach, has been getting them and having a blast doing it!

And to make it even better, no pesty Mosquitoes so far!!!  Unlike down at swiftware where they are so thick you can cut them with a knife or watch them work together to pick up small children and pets.....

Our dock is open fishing for all our guests, as long as they have a Fishing Lic.

Thanks, and hope to see you here!

    Giving back helps everyone!

    Posted 02:04 PM June 10, 2007

My business is a big part of my life, and it's good to give back. Every year we donate items to numerous charitable events. We're very active at our local community, providing volunteer time and attending meetings. With a local business, it's important to not just serve the community, you should be part of the community as well! This year are are also providing an experience for some needy Boy Scouts from the lower 48. We are providing free lodging for the boys in exchange for some help in the garden and around th house so they can earn badges, and also see the wonders of Alaska. We also hope they will get to enjoy some time fishing from our dock on the river. Our future lies in the hands of young men and women like the scouts and to preserve Mother Nature, they need to understand it and grow to love it at a young age, and we are all for that! We plan to do this at least once a year in the future to help protect and promote our great community and the wonders of Mother Nature

    Kenai River is breaking up

    Posted 10:33 PM April 13, 2007

It looks like Spring is finally here, as the Famous Kenai River is breaking up finally, here in Soldotna Alaska. The major Ice flows earlier this year have made many chages in the shore line, as many docks, trees, rocks, and even a few building have made their way downstream due to the massive ice flows we had earlier this season. But now its time to start getting ready for the upcoming wonderful Fishing season. Are you ready for your shot at a Wolrd Record King Salmon? If you are, I sure hope you have gotten your B&B; reservations in, and if not, you need to call now as we have just a few openings left for the wonderful King (bhinook) salmon season. The Red Salmon (sockeye) run should provide a lot of wonderful fun to the many thousands of anglers on the Kenai river this year. My personal favorite is the Siver or Coho Salmon. They are fun to watch as they tail walk across the water, esp if you are using light line. Nothing like landing a 12-20# silver on 10 or 15# test!! That will get yoru heart pumping! And nothing feeds those energy drains, like one of our mouth watering homemade Cinnamon Rolls, that our guests love so much! Hope to see you here this year, and I am sure you will love the fresh rolls and breads like all our other guests do. We are now open year round for your to come relax and enjoy!
