The top-performing category? Sports and fitness! That retail category enjoyed a whopping 18% growth over last year! The apparel and accessories category also performed well online. According to comScore, sales for that industry increased 4% on the Web, but in the other channels, the category suffered a 19-21% drop!  

ComScore's Gian Fulgoni said that, once again, retailers who leverage the Web couldn't be ignored as a viable shopping solution during the holiday season.

"...A positive note is that e-commerce trends outperformed overall consumer spending in several product categories, which is to say that e-commerce continued to capture an increasing share of consumers' wallet," he said.

Fulgoni said e-commerce will continue to draw consumers, even after the economy has recovered.

"...when the consumer economy eventually does rebound, e-commerce is poised to benefit from its emergence as an important consumer sales channel."
