Strategic deworming is a practice recommended by the American Association of Veterinary Pathologists and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The following protocol is recommended to minimize exposure of our pets and ourselves to various parasitic diseases.
Puppies and Kittens
· Deworm every 2-3 weeks until they are 3 months old
· Then deworm then every month until they are 6 months of age
Adult Dogs and Cats
· Deworm every 3 months (4 times each year) based on parasite exposure and incubation periods of various parasites
Pregnant Dogs
· Deworm once prior to mating
· Once at whelping (giving birth)
· Then at 2 and 4 weeks after whelping
Pregnant Cats
· Should be dewormed at the same time as kittens
Newly Acquired Dogs and Cats
· Deworm immediately and then repeat the deworming in 2-3 weeks.
After initial dewormings, follow the guidelines above
