In Identity Theft Victim's story-in their own words

Identity theft is a life changing event.  Once you are a victim things are never the same again.  The effects can be felt years later.  Many people think that Identity theft victims have an issue, they fix it and problem solved.  More often than not it's fix a problem and hold your breath until the other shoe drops.  Then fix that problem.

The Opinion section of the May 15th, 2009 Chicago Tribune carried the story of an Identity Theft Victim in her own words.  For the past 12 years, her life has been intertwined with the life of a woman who stole her purse and her identity.  Legal battles to clear her name of one charge only to find herself on the verge of being arrested by Customs for smuggling an illegal substance.  This is the reality of identity theft, not the cute commercial with the guy talking about the leather bustier in a girl's voice.

There is nothing amusing or funny about identity theft, just ask the victims who are constantly watching over their shoulder to see what issue will disrupt their life next.

Being a victim of identity theft is frustrating. You have to go through a rough and long ordeal of clearing your name and tracking down the suspect. Though it may seem impossible to stop identity theft, we can protect ourselves and prevent this from happening. We should keep our private belongings safe under lock and key. Our mailboxes locked up and to be careful in trusting confidential matters to other people. Constant vigilance people!

Are you actually suggesting that we can stop identity theft? As a Certified Identity Theft Risk Management Specialist, I know better. We can take the steps to lower our risk. Guard our information, shred documents, check our credit reports and know our billing statements. We can even sign up for services that claim to "prevent others from stealing our identity" and it can and will still happen. My information, your information, everyone's information is scattered in different databases belonging to different entities across the country. Each of us is in an average of 50 databases, can we control all these databases? No we can't. All we can do is take the steps to be sure that the information is not coming from us. And have something that will fix it, the entire identity and not just our credit. That means now only finding the identity theft issues but addressing the cost of legal fees associated with fixing it.
