where the economy is headed

Posted 09:53 AM July 26, 2010

Business experts monitor these little-known statistics very closely, as they're often solid indicators of where the economy is headed in the months ahead:

  1. The Pulse of Commerce Index (PCI): PCI measures the amount of diesel fuel being purchased at truck stops around the country. The amount of goods carried by these trucks and the frequency of routes give economists a sense of how robust business is flowing.
The good news: the PCI jumped 3.1% between April and May – the largest one-month increase since 1999.
  2. Service sector shipments: The service sector measures the amount of scrap and waste material hauled off by trains every month. This statistic is always relevant because it reflects the rate of production in several industries, most notably manufacturing.
The good news: Waste and scrap shipments hit their highest rate in 16 years last month, a solid indication businesses are ramping up production.
  3. Electric output: The Edison Electric Institute monitors how much electricity the corporate sector uses every week.
    The good news:
Usage for the first week in June was up nearly 11% from the same week in 2009, a sign of more employees, higher productivity and increased work hours.

Energy Saving that adds money in your pocket.

Posted 02:37 PM January 30, 2010

How do you apply recycling and energy management in everyday use without breaking a bank?

Make your building energy efficient.  Make sure no air leaks in the building.  Any visible air or light indicates leakage.  Seal it with foam insulation and you have saved some.
Draw curtains close at night saves valuable heat from escaping the house.
Shut off doors and window asap to avoid sharp losses of energy when heat or AC is on.  Use weather seal to close gap in the door or window opening.

Control, reduce and reuse water.
Use low flow Shower head (1.5gpm),  Low flow faucet aerator(1gpm or -0.5 gpm).  This three can save you a lot of water and cut your water and sewer bill.  Low flush toilets (1.3gpf) are good but takes longer recovery period so when you are replacing an old toilet look for energy efficiency.  Energy star rated washer will add to this savings when it is time for replacement.  Until then you can always consolidate laundry in full loads which saves you lots of water and energy.

Recycle your waste:
Separate recylables and drop off at recycling center.
Separate food waste in a reparate bin and add to compost pile with the grass clipping from lawn moving.  This compost pile could be enriched with a bag of cow manure, crushed/chopped leaves and few rotten apples.
News Paper could be used for mulch bedding which preserves water in soil and control weeds.  Paper slowly disintegrate in the soil.
Peanut and Pistachio shells could also be used as mulch around flower bedding.
Tree leaves in fall could be crushed by using lawn mover. Place them around hard to control weed area over news paper bedding or work into the garden soil to enrich soil with cow manure.
Dead tree branches could be cut up in 15" to 18" piece for use in outdoor fire pit for Free heat and out door entertainment in fall.
Recycle rain water for planting in summer.
Replace regular bulbs with energy saving compact flouroscent bulbs.  Shut off unnecessary lights automatically with occupancy censors or manually.

Do bulk of laundry during off peak time which saves few dollars on electric energy every month.

Do all of the above and save your self hundreds of dollars.  Save Planet by action.

The international recycling symbol.

Black Stone Valley, The Gem of New England

Posted 04:03 PM December 30, 2008

Blackstone Valley is the birthplace of American industrial revolution. Samuel slater started in 1790 in wooden mill in Pawtucket along Black Stone River.  Since the revolution the area was in downward spiral.  In 1985 a local genius started an uphill battle to revive the valley.  Some laughed at it and some thought it was overly optimistic.  But lenends make history, and that person is Mr. Bob Billington (BB).  BB brought the best of the Blackstone through his tireless effort to promote tourism.  This year he is recognised to receive the top honour in Dubai, 2008 Tourism for Tomorrow Destination Award Winner

Billington wins "North American Travel Personality of the Year" from World Travel for putting a golden touch to Black Stone Valley.

More May Green.... Recycle and Sustainability

Posted 12:48 PM April 29, 2008

Recycling is the reprocessing of old materials into new products, with the aims of preventing the waste of potentially useful materials, reducing the consumption of fresh raw materials, reducing energy usage, reducing air (from incineration) and water (from landfilling) pollution by reducing the need for "conventional" waste disposal, and lowering greenhouse gas emissions as compared to virgin production. Recycling is a key concept of modern waste management and is the third component of the "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" waste hierarchy, though colloquial usage of "recycling" can also include "reuse".The international recycling symbol.

As with environmental economics, care much be taken to ensure a complete view of the costs an benefits involved. For example, cardboard packaging for food products is more easily recycled than plastic, but is heavier to ship and may result more waste from spoilage.

Sustainable Design

Much of the difficulty inherent in recycling comes from the fact that most products are not designed with recycling in mind. The concept of sustainable design aims to solve this problem, and was first laid out in the book "Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things" by architect William McDonough and chemist Michael Braungart. They suggest that every product (and all packaging they require) should have a complete "closed-loop" cycle mapped out for each component—a way in which every component will either return to the natural ecosystem through biodegradation or be recycled indefinitely.

May's Birthstone is Emerald.........GREEN

Posted 12:42 PM April 29, 2008

Emerald is regarded as the traditional birthstone for May, as well as the traditional gemstone for the astrological signs of Taurus , Cancer and sometimes Gemini. One of the more quaint anecdotes on emeralds was by the 16th century historian Brantome, who referred to the many impressive emeralds the Spanish under Cortez had brought back to Europe from Latin America. On one of Cortez most famous emeralds he had the text engraved Inter Natos Mulierum non sur-rexit mayor (Among them borne of woman there hath not arisen a greater Man. XI, 11) which referred to John the Baptist. Brantome considered engraving such a beautiful and simple product of nature sacrilegious and considered this act the cause for Cortez loss of an extremely precious pearl (to which he dedicated a work A beautiful and incomparable pearl) and even for the death of King Charles IX who died soon after.

Emeralds come in many shades of green and bluish green. There is a wide spectrum of clarity, dependent on the inclusions and fractures in the crystal. Clear stones with dark yet vibrant color command the highest prices. Almost all emeralds contain numerous flaws, cracks, and inclusions, which can negatively affect the clarity. These are given the name "jardin", from the French word for garden. The value of an emerald depends on cut, color, clarity, and carat. Currently the best emeralds come from the Muzo mine in Colombia.

Most emeralds are oiled as part of the post lapidary process, in order to improve their clarity. Cedar oil, having a similar refractive index, is often used in this generally accepted practice. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission requires the disclosure of this treatment when a treated emerald is sold. The amount of oil entering an emerald microfissure is roughly equivalent to the size of a period (full stop) in print. The use of green-tinted oil is generally not considered acceptable by the gem trade.
