My latest articles have been geared to women so now I'm going to give the men some equal air time.  My male clients that come to me have continually asked about hair style trends as color trends to enhance a look, or hide some of the gray. In this article, I'll go through some of these cutting trends, talk about color trends for all ages, and give some overall style tips.

Fall 2009 Hair Styles

Fall 2009 hair styles that have been shown on the fashion runways is layered hair. Wearing layered hairstyles gives you more body and the look that you have thicker hair.   This falls trend is to include lots of texture by using razor cuts, especially around the perimeter of the hairline.  With the right style, you can really appear like you have thicker and more luxurious hair than you ever thought you had before.

Adding Color

A professional colorist will be able to use color to add a more texture look to your style.  Give longer hair a whole new take by playing with color. Highlights or low-lights that are less bold and not too stripy on a long hairstyle, will give the hair dimension. Today almost anything is acceptable, even hair color changes ranging from the subtle to the extreme. –       Message your scalp – massage shampoo into your scalp to help stimulate hair growth.  The key to a fuller head of hair is good circulation of the scalp.

–       If you have oily hair, remember that oil weighs down your hair and becomes dull.  Wash your hair daily and use hair products to enhance your style.  Your professional stylist will recommend hair products specific to your needs.

–       If you have fine hair, always make sure you completely rinse your hair from any shampoo or condition since product build-up will flatten your hair.  There are men's professional products that help to increase shine and make your hair fuller – ask your stylist.

As temperatures begin to cool down outside, so will haircolor this fall and winter season with more sophisticated cooler brunettes and blondes, and striking reds. Using professional products such as Redken and Tocco Magico to achieve these trends, along with listening to the client to understand their hair needs, provides a completely stylish look that will turn heads.

These leading professional products will update clients look to today's trends creating sophisticated, cool shades. A color is said to have "cool tones" if it tends toward blue or violet, such as platinum blondes, ash browns, and plum reds.

Fall Trend #1: Redheads: This fall redheads will be more sophisticated, and playful with their beautiful shade, with warm shades that flicker depth and dimension on an intense base and golden highlights. But also shades of red, from burgundy and strawberry blonde to copper brown and auburn will be among the most wanted shades this year.

Fall Trend #2: Brunettes: Always in vogue, brunettes will go to a whole new level this fall with an overall cooler base. For the perfect tone-on-tone brunette, get subtle golden highlights painted on top of a light but warm brunette base. To add depth, a slightly darker color at the roots and under layers will do the trick.

Fall Trend #3: Blondes: Blondes will be rich this fall.  One of the most popular blondes of the moment is an expensive look with natural finish, by weaving different shades of blonde, from sable, mink and vanilla through the hair. The new blonde is always paired with lowlights. Tone-on-tone coloring - like blonde on blonde -  this adds smart sophistication to any shading.

To complete the fall haircolor story, the use of gloss helps to increase shine.

Remember that good communication with your colorist is essential for getting the color you want. A few minutes of pre-salon prep can help you explain your goals, and ensure that your colorist understands your desired result.

Things to know before you go to hair salon and speak to your colorist:

·       Try to walk into the salon with your everyday "look," so your colorist can get a feel for what you're comfortable with.

·       Your colorist is there to work with you to achieve beautiful color. The more you can explain what you want, the better the collaboration will be.

·       If you are going in for "corrective color" – to correct color results you are unhappy with from a prior coloring experience – be prepared for a longer visit, as your colorist may need to remove old color and then recolor your hair.

·       Bring your inspiration: Photographs and examples of haircolor you love will help you and your colorist explore your color options.

·       Know your history: Be prepared to tell your colorist about any prior color services, whether it was highlights last year or a color gloss last month.

·       Trust your colorist: Listen to your colorist's expert opinion. During your color consultation, he or she will consider your desired result, then evaluate your hair's condition and look at your skin tone and coloring in order to create your custom color formulation.

·       Ask questions: If you hear a color term you don't understand, don't hesitate to ask your colorist for an explanation. Remember to inquire about maintenance – how often you'll need to return to the salon for touchups, and how to best maintain your color at home between visits.

Japanese straighteners work on breaking and rearranging the internal bonds of the hair. Once these processes are done, the hair is permanently straightened but note that the new growth will always be curly, and the previously straightened hair will never revert or blend back. With Japanese straighteners, the promise is always of silky smooth hair, but the reality is that people who receive this type of treatment one can have very frizzy straight hair if the cuticle layer of their hair is damaged or abused. The Japanese Thermal Straightener will permanently straighten one's hair and substantially reduce frizz, but it will never correct the current condition of the hair cuticle.

Keratin Treatment

The Keratin Treatment is a semi-permanent treatment that is keratin based. It will rebuild the hair, seal the cuticle and protect it from the elements. It is not meant to be permanent because the bonds are not being broken or re-arranged; therefore if you want to maintain the Keratin Treatment look you will have to have it done more often then a Japanese Straightener. The more damaged the hair the better the results with the process and repeated applications will make the hair silkier and smoother.  You may have the Keratin Treatment done if you have previously had your hair relaxed or straightened by a Japanese straightening system and your result will be soft, shiny and straight just the same. The time is shorter than that of the Japanese straightening therefore the price may be cut a bit, but your return visits will be more than your once or twice a year.
