Tips for shooting better holiday video
To make sure your video is fun to watch and includes all the important parts of your holiday, follow these tips:
1. Film your family or buddies getting ready before the trip begins.
Record your family or buddies waking up on the big day, scurrying
around looking for last minute items, and trying to find the tickets.
It'll provide a great start for your movie, and people who watch your
video will have instant insight into your life.

2. Get up early to capture the peaceful atmosphere of your holiday destination..
Every place has a unique personality, and a good holiday video shows
that personality. Key West has wild chickens that live in the streets.
Quebec homes have colorful window boxes filled with flowers. Buildings
in Paris have gargoyles along the rooflines. It's hard to get footage
of these traits when you're caught up in the action of the day. Get up
early to take five or ten seconds of footage showing local character.
3. Let the kids shoot
This might sound a little risky
but if you really want to get some interesting footage and angles you
may have never consider, hand your camcorder to your kids and let them
shoot. Not only do most kids love to be the videographer, but it will
allow you to be in the video.
Most kids – at least 5 and older – have no problem safely operating a
camcorder. Modern DV camcorders are pretty darn durable, and short of
dropping them down the stairs or into the pool, they are relatively
indestructible.
The only warnings I give to kids is to not hold the camcorder by the
viewfinder. I show them how to hold it, where the record start button
is, and then let them go.
You may have to do some editing to get rid of a bunch of silly, jerky
or otherwise unusable video, but that's the joy of modern computerized
video editing. I usually end up fast-forwarding through the kid footage
and just pulling out bits and pieces that complement the video that I
shot.
4. Show yourself
How many times have you watched a
videotape and been asked why there are no shots of you having fun? Get
yourself into your family movies. Let your kids, or significant other,
take control of the camcorder from time to time.
