How do I advertise on Google?
You can advertise your business on Google in 3 different ways:
1- Google Adwords PPC (Pay Per Click)
Google, Yahoo and MSN are the giants of the search engine world even though there are other players in this market.
These giants make money by selling online ad space to all sorts of companies in all walks of life.
They do it by letting businesses bet on Keywords and keyword phrases.
Keywords and keyword phrases are what online consumers type to search for a product or a service.
If you are trying to buy a computer online, you can type the word computer or you can be more specific and type Dell computers.
You can even be more specific and type Dell computer deals to see what kind of deals there are out there.
You can even decide to be a little more specific than that and say: Dell computer deals in Chicago.
As a Dell reseller, I can bid for some or all of these keywords and phrases.
The more specific I am the less costly the keyword phrases are.
If I am a computer repair shop, my keywords would be something like: computer repair, computer repair Chicago, computer service, computer repair services etc..
How does it all work?
A business owner creates an account with Google and sets up a campaign and an ad group under the campaign and then ads under each ad group.
These ads would look like the following:
Chicago computer repair
Onsite same day service $25 off
100% guaranteed call 877-222-8598
When a visitor goes to Google to search for a computer repair shop in Chicago, they would type something like: computer repair shop in Chicago
The ad would come up and the user would click on it and get to my website.
As soon as the ad is clicked, Google charges my account a cost per click amount regardless of whether the visitor used my services or not.
Google does not guarantee you business but it guarantees you exposure and a chance that a visitor looking for your services may actually call you for service.
Everytime your ad appears on Google, it is called an impression.
if your ad appears 100 times and it was only clicked 10 times then, your click through rate would be 10%.
Now if your ad was seen 100 times and was clicked 10 times but only 1 person actually called you then your conversion rate is 10%.
Conversion rate is the number of clicks divided by the number of calls you received from the customers.
If your computer repair shop is in Chicago, you do not have any reason to advertise to the whole United States, Therefore you need to target your Chicago area customers and both Google and Yahoo allow you to specify the geographical region where you intend to advertise.
Search engines also give you the opportunity to decide what your daily budget would be.
You can spend as little as you want and as much as you want depending on the size of your business and how aggressive you want to be.
You can bid lower or higher and you can even choose what time of the day you want to advertise and what times you don’t want to.
if your daily maximum is $50, you can spread that $50 dollars throughout the day or you can use it right away and after that your ad will not show up until the next day.
Search engines also allow you to choose what external websites you want to show your ads on. You even get to pick a different dollar amount for advertising on those placement websites.
You also have the option of running to ads to see which one performs better so you can keep the one that performs well and delete the one that does not.
You are asked to point your ad to your website as part of setting up the Google ad under the Adwords campaign. It is recommended that you point your ad directly to the page with the product or service you are trying to promote and not to the landing page.
It is very important that the page the ad is pointing to is designed correctly and that it meets the minimum graphical user interface criteria.
2- Google Local Listings (Google Maps)
How do I achieve higher Ranking in Google Local Business Listings?
Add your business to the Google Local Listings. You can do this by going to:
http://www.google.com/local/add You can't do this until you sign up for a Gmail id. If you do
not have one, go ahead and sign up for one at:
https://www.google.com/accounts/NewAccount?service=mail
Add links that point to your local listing from yellow pages and other local advertisers.
Add a map to your local listing. A map would help people locate your business and find directions.
Add images to your local listing. You are allowed to add up to 10 images
Put a video on Youtube about your products or services and link to it from your local listing.
Reviews. Have your customers write reviews for your business. The more reviews you have the higher your ranking.
Coupons. Google Local listing now allows you to create coupons for people to use at their next visit.
Google Local Business Listings are different than organic or pay-per-click listings in the sense that the search results come up when you type the keyword or keyword phrase followed by city, state or zip code
Google Local Listings pay close attention to zip codes and geographical information. You can even type downtown Chicago and the Google engine is smart enough to
understand where that is.
If someone is looking for a computer repair shop in Chicago for example, they will type the keyword Chicago as part of the search keyword phrase because they want someone in Chicago.
3- Google organic (also called natural) SEO
Based on the definition found in Wikipedia, “Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results. Usually, the earlier a site is presented in the search results, or the higher it "ranks," the more searchers will visit that site. SEO can also target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines”.
Organic listings are free but you need to have a search engine optimizer do it for you if you want to do it right. You also want a professional optimizer to do it because if you overdo it, you may be blacklisted and your links will be removed from the search engine. engine.
You can also spend sometime learning about SEO if you have time, you are technologically savvy and you do not have the money to hire someone to do it for you.
