Three chemical compounds are used in self defense sprays for civilians. They are:
CS (Orthochlorobenzalmalonitrile)
CN (Alphachloroacetaphenone)
OC ( Oleoresin Capsicum)
CS and CN irritate membrane tissue. They are chemical compounds that cause tearing and stinging pain. Police officers have had years of experience in the field with these products. Unfortunately, they were plagued with problems, mostly high failure rates. A person having a psychotic episode, on drugs, or drunk may be unaffected by the spray. Also since they could take 5 to 30 seconds to work, an assailant wielding a knife or club they may not be disabled before an attack could occur.
OC commonly called pepper spray is newer and more effectve than CS or CN. It’s not an irritant, it’s an inflammatory. When a person is sprayed in the face with OC a couple things happen immediately. First, they clamp their eyes shut, tightly. If they do manage to open them they still can’t see because the OC dilates the capillaries in the eyes causing temporary blindness. Second the person has an uncontrollable fit of coughing, causing them to double over. Also the breathing tissue becomes inflamed, restricting breathing to life support only. It stops an assailant dead in his tracks. Since it is an inflammatory not an irritant it will work on persons having a psychotic episode, on drugs, or drunk. It is also effective on animals and some are designed for that specific purpose.
When comparing the different defense sprays that OC pepper spray is a more effective than the other compounds. This is the only self-defense spray a civilian should consider buying.
