It's always difficult growing anything, especially grass, under trees because the plants are competing with the tree roots for water and the tree usually wins.  You'd be better off with a thin layer of much over landscape fabric.  It would keep down the weeds and make things look orderly.  Or you could try a ground cover that can grow in the dry shade under trees.   It's not a good idea to disturb or damage tree roots unless you're looking to kill the tree.  Even if you did try, the roots of many trees will find their way to the surface because they need air.

Take a look at this interactive map that shows the economic stress levels of every county in the continental US.  I found this very interesting about the state of Arizona's economy and the economy of some of the other most desirable locations to live.   

When every effort to achieve a beautiful Bermuda grass lawn fails, it leaves many home owners scratching their head. 

Even when you have done everything to ensure optimal growing conditions have been made to help your lawn grow, sometimes it will still not grow because of other reasons. Some known facts are: Bermuda grass requires nearly full sun in order to stay healthy. Anything less and it will be very thin and leggy. The lack of sufficient light reaching the grass results in the reduction of photosynthesis, which is the process that produces energy for growth, and causes the plant to have a lower tolerance to heat, cold, disease, drought and wear stress.  As a result of all the factors mentioned, turf grown in places with less sun often shows a steady decline in density over a period of years.  You may ask why the grass hasn't thinned out in other shaded areas in my yard. The most likely answer is those areas get afternoon shade and will allow the winter rye grass to grow throughout the summer months.  The same conditions almost certainly don't exist for your entire lawn.

The solution to you is the following: Because it is a steady decline, it is possible to renovate problem areas to some degree of success by re planting new Bermuda sod when the areas become too thin.  This would solve the problem for a number of years but would still thin over time.  To give you some reference point, we have done many lawn renovations this summer for around a $1.00 to per sq. ft. We re-sod with BOB Sod named after Bank One Ball Park renamed Chase field.  BOB Sod is the most tolerable in the shade over all other Bermudas.  This sod was hybridized specifically for the stadium because of the abundant amount of shade that is cast from the high walls that surround the field. 

Whatever the case is in your lawn don't worry, we have never had any problem growing the winter lawn, even in the problem areas.  Planting a winter lawn will not have any bearing on the condition of your lawn next summer.
