I live in San Diego, CA and if you have been watching the news the last few days you have probably seen we are surrounded by a number of fires here.  Fortunately I did not have to evacuate, but many of the residents were not so lucky.  I have been glued to the TV the last few days watching to see if we would need to go or not.  Many of the families who were interviewed who had either picked up things before they left or talked about things they lost, pictures were always first on their list.  Pictures are so important to each one of us.  They keep our memories of great times together, our friends or family whom we have lost or our children who seem to change daily.  But there is no reason we need to lose our pictures in a disaster with modern technology, if we plan ahead.  If you scan all those pictures on to a disk, you can save them in fire safe box with your important papers, or in a safe deposit box, or make a few copies to give to family for safe keeping. Also another suggestion they gave on the news is go take pictures of your things both for insurance purposes and for keepsake-if they get distroyed.  Sometimes after it is all gone its hard to remember everything you had.  We all hope we don't have to lose our homes and belongings, but with fires, flood, huricanes, earthquakes and tornado's, you never can predict what will happen.  Isn't it better to be safe than sorry.  The last few days have made me realize how important it is to be prepared ahead of time.
