    Caring for your DVD’s

DVD technology helps to preserve your memories only as long as you help preserve your DVD’s.  Here are a few tips to help you keep your media safe and in good working order, so you can enjoy your memories forever.

DVD’s are read by lasers, which means such things as dust, dirt, scratches, and fingerprints can effect your DVD’s working properly.  You may see such things as the DVD skipping, or in some cases you DVD may not play at all.  What can you do to ensure that this doesn’t happen to you?

Keep your DVD clean and free of dust.  You can buy cleaners for DVD players at places like Circuit city, Radio Shack or best buy. Prices range from about 3 to 20 dollars.  It will give you a disk to drop into your DVD player and in a few minutes it will be squeaky clean.  Do this from time to time so that dust does not build up.

    Tips for Handling Disk

    1. Only pick up the disc holding the middle hole and/ or the outer edge of the DVD .
    2. When you are not using the DVD, keep it in a case: Try to fight the temptation to leave them lying unprotected on the table or on top of the DVD Player (or PC). Never stack you disk on top of each other without their cases.
    3. Do not bend the disk in any way.
    4. Keep them away from direct sunlight or excessive heat. Don’t store them on top of your computer, TV or DVD player.
    5. Keep discs away from very young children, pets, and anything else that could cause them damage.

    Tips for Cleaning Disk

    1. Stay away from using cleaners with things like acids, solvents or abrasives.
    2. When cleaning use a soft cloth-such as used to clean eye glasses or camera lenses. Lightly wipe the surface area of the disc from the center section outwards. DO NOT wipe in a circular motion because data is recorded on the DVD in a circular fashion, and thus cleaning in this way could cause small scratches. This may cause errors on the disc.
    3. If this still doesn’t work, try commercial products: There are several different DVD cleaning agents on the market that you can use.
