Forget anorexic brows! At the Boom Boom Brow Bar in New York City, owner Boom Boom does 500 brows a month and this fall she says you have to be bold. But never fear; bold brows do not equal overgrown or bushy. She picks her celebrity brow faves, plus offers up tips on achieving the best look for a client.

"To tell you the truth, most people over think brows and that's where they get in trouble—a little situation I call anorexic brows," says Boom Boom. "So, here's some advice, don't over wax or tweeze—cleaning up strays, balancing the arch and a little brow powder is all it takes to have bold beautiful brows." Her Hollywood favorites and brows to emulate include Keira Knightley, January Jones, Megan Fox, Lea Michele, Eva Mendes, Demi Lovato and Penelope Cruz.

For those who have have over-tweezed and over-waxed, you can still help them achieve good-looking brows. Cover and fill-in areas where clients have bare spots, imperfections and lack of growth with a powder rather than dark pencil, since it's more natural looking.

"Apply powder with an angled, firm brow brush for precision application. For those in a more serious situation needing brow rehab, recommend a brow tint with wax to help camouflage the grow out phase and give the appearance of thicker, balanced brows. It's a total crowd pleaser. Ultimately, big bold brows are not about following rules, it's about tricking them out to look proportionate on the face."

FASHION WEEK: Day 1 By Maggie Mulhern

    Posted 06:24 AM September 20, 2010

Although the tents for Mercedes Benz Fashion Week are still under construction at Lincoln Center (the show moved from Bryant Park), the fashion press and other fashionistas have arrived in New York to see what's happening for Spring and Summer 2011. Aveda kicked off with one of the very first off site shows, sponsoring Organic by John Patrick. Lead stylist, Jenn Chiminiello, created "Wilted Waves", a sophisticated long loose silhouette. Says designer John Patrick of the finish:

"The undone, wavy look is sexy and unrestrained, inspired by a girl's hair after she's been in the water. It's very soft and flowing with lots of texture to give it a natural messiness. It's loose, second-day hair—like it was curled the day before and then left alone. Our collection this season is based around water. I love that the hair look evokes the salty, windblown feel of hair that's dried after being in the ocean. The style definitely has some 1970's, Charlie's Angels inspiration but the finished look is completely fresh.

Summer is Here--Does Your Sunscreen Work?

    Posted 06:03 AM July 04, 2008

    Happy Independence Day!

After an extened remix of winter/spring, summer has finally hit Portland!

To keep you and your family safe in the sun year round, we thought we'd share this article with you from Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database about sunscreens.

    Thank you for reading!

*****Protection, special thanks and peaceful thoughts for the women and men in military service--and their families--this 4th of July.

From Skin Deep:  Cosmetic Safety Database  http://cosmeticsdatabase.com/special/sunscreens2008/

**Urbaca carries # 8 in the Recommended Common Brands, SkinCeuticals Physical UV Defense.**

Does your sunscreen work? An investigation of nearly 1,000 brand-name sunscreen products finds that 4 out of 5 contain chemicals that may pose health hazards or don't adequately protect skin from the sun's damaging rays. Some of the worst offenders are leading brands like Coppertone, Banana Boat, and Neutrogena.

More than a million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in the U.S. every year, but FDA still hasn't finalized sunscreen standards first announced 30 years ago. Meanwhile, companies are free to claim but not provide broad spectrum protection. Until FDA requires that all sunscreens be safe and effective, Environmental Working Group's comprehensive sunscreen guide—including a list of 143 products that offer very good sun protection—fills in the gaps.

    Top 10 products*
    1. Keys Soap Solar Rx Therapeutic Sunblock, SPF 30
