    Happy Birthday MLK

    by Larry Lubell

Happy Birthday Martin Luther King  Jr.

Your words and actions have been an inspiration to those seeking freedom and equality throughout the world. Yours was a message of hope that elevated all by appealing to the “Better nature” of each of us. You pushed the oppressed to have the strength to challenge their oppressors,  while you reached out a hand of forgiveness to those that had done you wrong.

You were a gift that has made America a better, stronger, more moral nation.

How does Credit Score affect Auto Insurance Rates?

    Posted 01:33 PM September 29, 2011

If you have a question, please contact us at 1-800-680-0707.

    by Larry Lubell

You are a careful, defensive driver, you follow the rules of the road and even received a “Good Driving Certificate” the last time you renewed your license; so you should be eligible for the lower car-insurance rates than your Neighbor with his spotty record?  Well, Don’t count on it!

In recent years, many companies have begun using your Credit Scores as a major factor in determining the cost of your Car Insurance coverage. Flying in the face of what might seem like common sense; the cost of a bad credit score can often be greater than having several tickets on your driving record. Even more disturbing, a recent Supreme court ruling, states that insurance companies are not required to notify you that your being charged more for your car insurance due to their credit scoring.

When the High court overturned a 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, the justices stated that the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act does NOT require insurers to notify customers when their credit history results in a surcharge being added to their rates.

Urban Insurance is one of the few companies’ left that does not surcharge for bad credit or no credit. We at Urban Insurance find the use of credit scores as a factor in rating upsetting for several reasons.

Chicago Car Insurance Since insurance companies are not telling you that your credit score drove up your rates, you don’t know to challenge the validity of the report. The truth is, credit reports often include errors; so you could be paying for other peoples mistakes.

    1. With the collapse of home prices, high unemployment and underemployment, even those who have had a long history of making payments on time; are finding it more challenging to maintain credit scores in the high 700s. If you are new to this country, have lost your job, or are behind in your payments; this use of a credit report, can be especially difficult and costly. Loosing your job is hard enough without then having companies jack-up your rates. The fact that Urban Insurance does not run your credit can save you hundreds of dollars.
    2. At Urban, we disagree with the basic idea that credit history is a good predictor of who is more or less likely to have a loss. Over the past 50 years, we have found that even the best driver can have an accident, but that drivers with a good driving record, are less likely to have a loss and deserve lower car insurance rates.

We at Urban, understand how hard you work for your money; that is why we search more than 20 different companies in order to find you the lowest Auto Insurance rates. Our rates can save you hundreds of dollars per year on your car insurance.

Picking the safest car for your Teenager

    Posted 02:27 PM August 17, 2011

    by Larry Lubell

How to Select a Safe Car for Your Teen Driver.

As a parent who’s son just got his permit today, this topic is particularly timely. Yes, knowing your child is going to be climbing behind the wheel of a car tends to “Focus your mind”.  You get concerned about their driving abilities as well as those around them.

Getting a driver’s license is an important rite of passage for teenagers. It allows them a level of freedom greater than any they had in the past. Most adults can still vividly remember the day they got their license. It is understandable that a new driver is going to view driving with a degree of excitement that most adults have long forgotten, and are going to want to drive every where and time they can. Every parent’s heart stops when they hear a report of another teen driver killed out on the road. The most natural emotion for any parent is to protect their child, and to worry every time their son or daughter gets behind the wheel. A total of 5,610 teenagers ages 13-19 died in motor vehicle crashes in 2004 Based on crashes of all severities, the crash rate per mile driven for 16-19 years-olds is 4 times the risk for older drivers. Risk is highest at age 16. In fact, the crash rate per mile driven is twice as high for 16 year-olds as it is for 18-19 year-olds
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the Insurance Information Institute (III) say there’s something worried parents can do to protect their teens – choose a safe vehicle.
1.Avoid older vehicles. I know few parents are eager to buy their newly licensed teenager a brand new car, but often that might be your safest choice. Each year, car manufacturers develop new and improve on older safety equipment. New cars have under gone more stringent crash tests and benefit from stronger safety cages and constantly improving knowledge about “Crumple Zones” As a result a newer mid-size car with airbags would be a safer choice than an older, larger car without airbags. All cars get safety ratings from the U.S. Department of Transportation, Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and Insurance Information Institute, check out the rating and information available on car’s safety
2.Don’t let your teen drive an unstable vehicle.
Sport utility vehicles, particularly small high ones, these SUVs have higher centers of gravity. The higher the center of gravity the greater the likelihood the vehicle will “Roll over” in an accident. True SUVs, like the Landover’s, were created to travel over ruff terrain; it is for that reason that they need higher ground clearance. When an inexperienced driver gets behind the wheel and finds them selves needing to engage in abrupt steering maneuvers – Newer drivers are more likely to over-correct their steering this can cause rollovers in these less stable vehicles.

3.Don’t select vehicles with a high performance image

    DB5, Shaken not Stirred

    Teen Driver

. The last thing you want to do is put a young and or inexperienced driver behind the wheel of a 400bhp auto. The faster a car goes from 0-60, the faster a person can find them selves in trouble. Sports cars with large engines, hood- scoops, oversized wheels and turbocharger or intercoolers, are likely to encourage speeding. One the cars will go faster, and two the peer pressure to “Spin the tires”, drag race, or just plain drive in a risky manner greatly increases Choosing a vehicle with a more sedate image may discourage this behavior, and the chances that your teen will be in an accident. Car insurance is not cheep for a teenage driver, Tickets and accidents will quickly push their rates through the roof. Don’t put your new driver a small automobile. Small vehicles offer much considerably less protection in crashes than larger heavier ones. The simple truth is, all things being equal, a larger car is safer than a smaller lighter car. If a locomotive collides with a Honda, you are safer in the train than the car. However, the safest thing is to avoid the accident all together. Large cars and trucks might be difficult to stop quickly, or more likely to roll. Most mid-to full-size cars offer more than adequate crash protection. Keep in mind the more air bags, the better, and make sure you never put your child in a car with poor tires or brakes. The sad truth is that “Life does not come with a guarantee” it is our job as parents to mmake the best choices we can, hope we taught our children well then cross our fingers.

    Rahm Emanuel faces tough choices

    Posted 12:48 PM May 31, 2011

Well, Chicago has a new Mayor.

    by Larry Lubell

Rahm Emanuel, avoided a runoff election with a Landslide win.It seemed that the race was predetermined from the moment he publicly set his sights on the prize. The only ”Road block” came from a challenge to his residence status, once that case came down his way he was home free.

Teacher's contracts, a Chicago casino, Car Thieft up 23% in-part connect to so many people out of work, join falling home prices as problems faces. Time, and public opinion will determine his place in history. He, like any Mayor or Governor today, he finds himself presiding over a budget with Red-Ink as far as the eye can see. People’s finances are stretched thin with little desire or ability to pay higher taxes. At the same time the easy cuts in spending have already been made, or make up such a minute percentage of the budget that their reduction will not move the needle in a meaningful way. This leaves Rahm, like other heads of government, with the need to make painful and unpopular cuts. I am sympathetic to those who employees that are watching their pay and benefits cut. Many of these government employees might have a spouse out of work, find their home is worth less than they owe, and now the’re being asked to take a pay cut. The hard truth is no government can continually go deeper into debt.

Rahm Emanuel has won the Chicago mayoral race, I wish him luck- and I’m glad it’s not me.

The Chicagoland High School Film Festival.

    Posted 01:21 PM May 16, 2011

    Chicago Film Festival

The Chicagoland High School Film Festival.

Back in the earliest day of the silient movies, Chicago was a dominate film center. But Chicago had a hard time satisfying the young film industry.  Electric lights were a new invention making them expensive, and the early bulbs had difficulty putting out more than 40 Watts. In addition to that, film speeds were slower than today, often under 50 ASA. For those reasons plus the ability to buy large amounts of land dirt cheep, sent the film industry to sothern California.

In Los Angeles, producers could count on large amounts of natural light, and plenty of room to build large “Back Lots”  for chariot races, Cowboys and cattle-rustlers, Even Moses and a cast of thousands. But after 60 years in the sunlight, Chicago is one of the cities fighting to bring the movie industry and the large revenues here on a regular basis.

In this digital age, it is not light that movie producers are after, it’s tax breaks  and talent. The Chicagoland High School Film Festival can play a role in introducing young people to the world of film, by giving young filmmakers a chance to get their feet wet, and build a community of other teens with a simular interest.

The Chicagoland High School Film Festival will be held at the Latin School of Chicago’s Wrigley Theatre

Friday, May 20, from 6:00-9:00 pm.

    Superman Comes To Chicago

    by Larry Lubell

    Superman come to Metropolis.

Chicago becomes Metropolis for the filming of Director: Zack Snyder‘s film about the Man Of Steel.

    Super Car Insurance

The insurance Superman would need if he Drove a car

Chicago played home to  Gotham City, in Nolan’s Dark Knight. In that film, Chicago was pictured as a city of shadows. A collection of buildings, and streets that looked as if the MATRIX was shot in a Film Noir style. While artistically interesting, it was clearly not a city that made one think of long walks along the beach, or picnics in Grant Park.

As about one Billion people watched, kate Middleton aggreed to “Take William for Richer or Poorer;”  if the $30,000,000.00 wedding left any doubt, the quick romp in his Dad’s vintage Aston DB6 made it clear Kate would not need to worry about being poor.

SB0152, will raise Car Insurance Rates in Illinois

    Posted 02:00 PM April 04, 2011

In the past few months the people of Illinois have watched as the quickly raising gas prices sucked their wallets dry. Prices pushing above $4.00 per gallon have forced families to make tough choices. The tragic events unfolding in Japan are pushing them, as well as nations on every continent to cut back on Nuclear power, and increasing their dependence on oil. The combination of additional demand coupled with the political instability of many of oil producing countries; in the long run will only result in a further rise in oil prices. As the cost of oil soars; not only will all Illinois residents pay more at the pump, but the cost of food, clothing, and healthcare will also hit new highs.

At a time when the “Middle-Class Worker” is watching their small-slice of the American pie shrink, as their expenses go up and their wages go down. I’m confident that when Sen. William R. Haine introduced SB0152, it was done with the best of intentions, and the sincere belief that “Mandatory Arbitration” will benefit the people of Illinois. I am not questioning his motivation, but I do question the wisdom of a bill that will put people out of work, and increase insurance costs on those least able to afford them....

    Posted 02:58 PM November 17, 2010

It is clear that America is not the only place where a rising number of law suits are having an impact on auto Insurance rates. In these Hard financial times, more people are under great financial pressure, This can often lead people to take actions that their conscience would not permit in less difficult times. It is interesting to see that Chicago, nor Illinois is not alone in this matter, but that is a part of a worldwide trend....
