Do uneven surfaces add a challenge or make it easier?

Posted 08:42 PM May 11, 2009

Outdoor yoga will also develop your patience and mental flexibility! I recommend using two thick mats while outdoors. That way all the tiny stones and uneven terrain will feel more comfortable to you. Bring a good attitude and a sense of adventure as you practice balancing on the new surfaces.

Are there do's and don'ts to outdoor yoga?

Posted 08:39 PM May 11, 2009

Do : Pack sunblock, insect repellent, a small first aid kit, a flashlight, water, sunglasses, a snack, waterproof/warm layers and do expect to get your mat (and yourself) dirty. Make sure you hike to your outdoor spot with a friend(s) so there are people around should something unexpected occur. Cell phone reception may not be a guarantee. Stick to trails to avoid damaging the wilderness and be sure to wear comfortable hiking boots or shoes with good traction.

Don't : Practice at the sun's peak in the middle of the day as this may overheat you. Be careful not to light any candles or incense outdoors and you will avoid unnecessary fire hazards. Be smart about foods and products you bring with you as they may attract rodents or other animals. Remember even a whiff of the chapstick in your pocket can attract a hungry bear, so - know your environment and be respectful of it. Of course pack out what you pack in, and this means soiled toilet paper, too!

What do you get outdoors that you don't get inside?

Posted 08:36 PM May 11, 2009

Simply by leaving the confines of a studio, the outdoor practice seems to attract a lot of men and women who have been curious to try yoga, but had always felt too shy or self-concious to sign up for a class in-studio. When the classroom is outdoors - free of the mirrors and windows and the designer clothes on sales racks - "the yoga scene" is left in the dust! The open space really expands everyone and there is an instantaneous freedom you just can not replicate indoors.

The sounds of nature are amazing, too. I've heard coyotes howl (in the distance) while transitioning into downward dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana) and birds sing to me in eagle pose (Garudasana).

1. What's the connection between yoga and outdoors or nature?

Posted 08:33 PM May 11, 2009

Yoga means union and when it is practiced outdoors it seems like the union with nature, humanity, and the universe is truly felt. Outside the prana, or life force, that sustains the trees, floats in the breeze, and nourishes each of us makes each inhalation feel like an inspiration; as we are literally feeding our spirits.

As yoga is an ancient practice the connection to nature is also a cultural one. Teachers must have explained the poses in terms of immediatley available examples : tree (Vrksasana), camel (Ustrasana), mountain (Tadasana). But there are also examples of poses that included human inventions : plow (Halasana), wheel (Urdhva Dhanurasana), gate latch pose (Parighasana). Walking and yoga are certainly meant to practiced together. When we hike to an outdoor spot our muscles are already warmed up and stretching and releasing feels much easier and more rewarding than when we simply roll from the car onto the mat.
