Being in the auto paint and body shop business for two decades, I'm no stranger to barter - the occaisional direct trade - but recently I traded some bodywork and paint for advertising - advertising that actually worked, I might add.

Back in the early days, England limited the currency that floated in the colonies. We HAD to barter... and the merchants and tavern owners were the ones who kept tabs and they became the first "banks". That's why in the East, there are many named "Farmers and Merchants" or similar names.
Today, barter can save real cash while if properly accounted for, can still show business income that proves your business successful in event you need to get financing.
