When I would make my clinical visits as a VNA nurse, I found a dramatic need for services that can help the elderly remain safely at home. My patients would often confide in me that one of their biggest fears was to be forced to leave their home and go to a nursing home. For many of my patients, all they needed to remain at home was a little assistance with bathing, meal preparation and light housekeeping from a compassionate caregiver. I decided that providing that caregiver would become my calling in life. My husband and I had talked about owning a business, so I convinced him to join me so that he could use his background as a business executive to manage the business and I could use my experience as a hospice/VNA nurse to oversee client care. I think we make a great team. In the 3-years we have been in business, we have become one of the most respected homecare agencies on the South Shore. I credit that to my clinical experience and the prescriptive process we utilize to train and supervise our caregivers. We only hire 40% of the caregivers that apply for jobs (I often wonder where the other 60% go for employment). All our caregivers are carefully screened, thoroughly trained and tightly supervised. In addition, they are all insured and bonded.
As President of the company, my experience as a VNA/Hospice nurse gives me a unique perspective on the nuances of homecare and the qualities needed to be a compassionate and effective caregiver to seniors. I use that background to carefully screen prospective employees and train them as I was trained to be a nurse. Providing exceptional care to our clients and their families is not just a goal or slogan for my agency, but it is in the DNA that makes us unique. We take great pride in the quality of our services and the difference we can make in the quality of life for our clients.
