I've been there 3 times and I used to eat at the Clam Box in Ipswich...these whole Bellies were JUST LIKE the old "Box!...You must have gotten the wrong cook! (hey it happens to the best of 'em) By Kyle L. on May 24, 2009 at 12:25 PM
I have to agree with the previous reviewer. I'm also from New England and have been in Calif. For 28 years now. I was raised on clams, and I mean whole clams - not the pathetic strips sold at most restaurants west of Massachusets. Anyway, was surfing the net one night and found that "Studio Diner" advertised "Full belly clams". Made a special trip down from Ventura and ordered up a double order in eager anticipation of the clams of my youth! I was sorely disapointed when they arrived. Overcooked to the point of being dark, crunchy jerky. If there were any bellies, I missed them. I gave up after crunching my way through a third of the order.
The restaurant is very nice and nostalgic. The wait staff are wonderful. My wife was happy with her dinner. Perhaps the diner should take clams off the menu, or not advertise them (and charge a premium price) as full belly clams. Maybe the cook was having a bad day or he/she has no idea how to cook clams. The waitress was wonderful. The kitchen was ridiculously slow. The food was a huge disappointment. Went after seening a clip on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives on Food Network. Went specifically for the clams. What clams??? Clam flavored breading. Being from back east, they don't know the meaning of full belly clams. I would never return! By Kim on May 27, 2008 at 10:21 AM
