About Anniston

Anniston is a city located in Calhoun County, Alabama. It is the county seat and one of the urban centers located in the Anniston-Oxford Metro Area. Situated on the slope of the Blue Mountain, the city was called The Model City by an Atlanta newspaperman named Henry W Grady. The city is the cultural center for northeast Alabama. The Alabama Shakespeare Festival is held here. And the Anniston Museum of Natural History, as well as the Berman Museum of World History are located in Anniston. There are many examples of Victorian style architecture located through out the city. The town's Oxford Area is where all the large shopping centers, such as the Oxford Exchange and Quintard Mall, are located. In 2002, the television show 60 Minutes revealed the Anniston was one of the most toxic cities in the United States. A part of Fort McClelan, an Alabama National Guard training facility and department of US Homeland Security, is located in the city. Students here attend the Anniston City Schools which consist of one high school, one middle school and four elementary schools. Other schools in the area include satellite campuses of Gadsden State Community College and Ayers as well as privates schools such as Faith Christian, Trinity Christian Academy and the Scared Heart of Jesus Catholic School. Famous people with ties to the city include NBA player Michael Curry, author June Burn, and NASCAR driver Red Byron.
