Kykotsmovi Village, located in Arizona's Navajo County, is home to the Hopi tribal government. Affectionately nicknamed "K-Town," it was founded in 1906 when a policy disagreement on how best to interact with federal agents and missionaries caused a split within the Hopi Nation in Oraibi. With a land area of 16.8 square miles, Kykotsmovi Village in the year 2000 boasted a population of 776 individuals, 93.43 percent of whom were of Native American descent. Kykotsmovi Village is home to Skyways, Inc., the Hopi Substance Abuse Prevention Center and a Head Start program. When visiting Kykotsmovi Village, the Hopi Cultural Center Restaurant & Inn, serving delicious food cooked Hopi-style, is the place to stay. Kykotsmovi Village, in and of itself, is its own special attraction. The Hopi Reservation is an excellent example of traditional Native American life as it has been lived for the past thousand years, although the Kykotsmovi Village people themselves prefer to be referred to as Hopis, not as Indians or Native Americans. Many local artists and craftsmen offer for sale one-of-a-kind pottery, Kachina dolls, jewelry and more. Mesa tours are also available.
