OK first off I have a question, Do you mean within Merchant Circle search or a generic search ie Google?

If it's the first then I'm not sure as I have not seen any way in MC to report a business as closed.

If it's the second then as long as the website is still active then Google, Yahoo, Bing etc will continue to index it , although the rankings will drop over time as the content is not updated. Assuming they renewed their domain just before April 2011 then it may take up to two years before the URL returns a not found error and then another 2-3 months before it vanishes completely.

I assume that as the phone number and address are still the same that you may be the owner of both the old and new businesses and if so then you can request from the domain providers that the domain be de-registered although to do that you will need to provide proof.

Also I think that if you can provide that proof then MC staff will be able to remove the listing. So I would suggest you contact MC direct and see what proof they need.
