These days, the teaching climate is very discouraging for teachers. Creativity and innovation are not rewarded; high test scores are, and even worse, low test scores are punished, even though they might be the result of a poor teacher the year before. (Research shows this.) If you feel your child's teacher is not able to reach your child, try to communicate with the school about this, first with the teacher, and if that doesn't work, go to administration. There are more learning issues today than in the past due to environmental, dietary, epigenetic and other factors, but there may also be overdiagnosis. If you feel your child is being treated differently due to a misdiagnosis by a teacher, again, try communication first. It's a tough thing for a parent to admit his or her child has a learning issue; are you avoiding facing something? Does the school have evidence you don't want to see? Or are they too quick to diagnose a restless child who is bored in the classroom with ADHD? You may need to advocate for your child with the school. This may require teaming up with other parents to make change happen. If that doesn't work, it may be impossible to fight the system; do the best for your child by moving him or her to another school, or add private tutoring, or even homeschool if that's an option.
