If the wireless network has security enabled then Yes you do have to have a password to connect your iPod to your wireless network. If you do not know your password ask the administrator of the network or who ever setup the wireless router. If your ipod is not accepting the password you can try testing your ipod where free wifi hot-spots are offered like a Starbucks or a Public Library, if the ipoddoes not connect here then it may be a problem with your ipod's wifi radio and you should contact Apple.

How does one go about getting a test prototype made?

You need to find a company that makes prototypes. There are lots of them. For general hard prototypes (stuff made out of metal or plastic, for example), a machine shop is a good place to start. You could also have a part made by 3D printing, which can be faster, but is still pretty expensive. Industrial engineering or design firms can also be very helpful. If you Google prototyping for your area, you'll probably find someone who can help.
