When something is notarized, will it hold up in court if it is done by a notary? Should it be shown to a lawyer in the case of legal documents?

Make sure you higher a savvy notary who is also insured in case you need to go against them in a court of law. I understand your sentiments about "doing crime and paying for it". That is exactly what the "rulers of any society (whether so called democratic or otherwise) wants its population to believe and continuously brainwash them into forming such beliefs. That is how the rulers rule and stay in power.
The real issue is not whether or nor your nephew committed the crime (s) or not but the correct way of looking at this situation is "Whether or Not the police, prosecution, and the State can prove beyond a reasonable doubt . If they (prosecution, police, and State) cannot prove all the elements of the alleged crime beyond a reasonable doubt your nephew is not guilty of doing any crime. That is the law. Now for sentencing your nephew should have built up a record of mitigation (reasons for the Judge to lower the sentence. Whether or not your nephew gets probation or community corrections or prison depends on a multitude of factors. These are his criminal history, his attitude, "remorsefulness", DA recommendations, pre sentencing investigation report, position of victim(s), safety of community, likelihood of re offending, nature of crime, what he has done so far to rehabilitate himself. These are just a few.

Further, if he took a plea bargain some DA and Judges allow for a stipulation as to the amount of jail, capping the jail amount or even no jail or prison. They have also kick children out of their center without worthy cause and they do it with no notice. They have call parents in the evening and stated your child is no longer allowed to come to our faculty effect immediately.
