There are 2 different things, a cash register-which has a locking cash drawer, and a Point of Sale terminal. A cash register/cash drawer should be permanently attached and have a good lock so bad guys can't just grab it and run. A Point of Sale terminal can be done on an ordinary PC or laptop. Software can be added that operates bar scanners, credit card swipers, check scanners, etc. You can even get POS software that will track inventory, scan tags, allow product and price updates, handle refunds and exchanges, and process credit cards.
