Is there anyway to test old fixtures to see if they have any lead based paint on them? Also, should you hire a professional to remove lead based paints before repainting?
There are various options for testing:
1. Using EPA approved test kits such as Lead Check or D-Lead. These kits are only approved to determine whether lead paint is not present. They are however a fair guide in determining whether you have lead paint or not.
2. Hire a Lead Inspector to conduct testing through XRF analysis. This is generally the most accurate method.
If you intend doing any work that deals with lead paint, you should, at the least, attend a lead safety class. There are currently many training providers conducting RRP training in all states. The training helps to keep you and future occupants of your home safe. This course only deals with renovation and repair. If your intention is to remove lead paint, it is best done by a lead abatement contractor. Your local health department will provide you with a list of lead inspectors and abatement contractors in your area. With lead, always remember "a little dust goes a long way". Rather be safe than sorry.
