About Plainfield

Plainfield is a town in Windham County, Connecticut. The population was 14,619 as of the 2000 census. The town is made up of four villages: Plainfield, Moosup, Wauregan, and Central Village. Plainfield was incorporated in 1699, originally named Quinebaug. The town was renamed to Plainfield in 1700. Plainfield evolved to become an industrial fixture in the 19th and 20th centuries. This was because the town was located close to the Moosup and Quinebaug Rivers, which provided power to the different mills around town. Major attractions in Plainfield include the Central Village Historic District, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. The biggest schools here are Plainfield Memorial School, and Plainfield High School. The most famous person from Plainfield was baseball player and 1950 American League rookie of the year, Walter Dropo.
