How does one remove tile?

How does one safely remove ceramic tile so that it can be reused at a later date?

Modern Renovations, LLC image Answered by Modern Renovations, LLC

Some people hope that they can remove ceramic tile from one installation and salvage it for another project. This is rarely the case, if the tile was installed properly. The tile should be adhered fully to the cement mortar, which may or may not remove easily from the substrate, depending on the type of bond when it was installed. Trying to remove the mortar cleanly from the back of the tile is very difficult, and the time involved would negate any cost savings of simply purchasing new tile for the project.
