About Fort Madison

Fort Madison is a city located on the shores of the Mississippi River. The city is one of two county seats of Lee County, Iowa.The other county seat is Keokuk, Iowa. The population of Fort Madison was 10,715 as of the 2000 census. Fort Madison is located in the the Fort Madison–Keokuk Micropolitan Statistical Area. An intersting historical fact is that Fort Madison was the location of the first US military fort in the upper Mississippi region. Today, a replica of the original for rests in its place, and is a popular tourist attraction. The city is also home to the Iowa State Penitentiary, the state's maximum security prison for men. The city is also home to the last remaining double swing-span bridge on the Mississippi River, the Fort Madison Toll Bridge. One of the best places to visit in Fort Madison is the Historic Downtown Area, known for its 19th century storefronts and home to a diverse array of boutique an specialty shops. The biggest school in the area is Southeastern Community College.
