Lake in the Hills, Illinois, is a village located in McHenry County, Illinois and is a suburb of Chicago. Lake in the Hills, often abbreviated L.I.T.H. or LITH, was once a small lakeside village. Over the past 20 years, Lake in the Hills has seen its population increase nearly 400% and has become known as one of the fastest growing suburbs in the Chicagoland area. This increase in population was contributed to rapid commercial development. Lake in the Hills is recognized for its high quality of life, large amount of amenities and community services. Some of the many services provided by the village include the police department, fire protection districtb and municipal water service. In addition, the village operates a parks and recreation department that offers a wide variety of outdoor recreational facilities and programs that are available year round. Several lakes are located within the village: Woods Creek Lake; Goose Lake; Willow Lake; and Lake Scott. Every year in September, Lake in the Hills hosts the Sunset 5K Run. Schools in Lake in the Hills are served by Community School District 300, located within in the village and school districts 155, 158 and 47, located in neighboring cities.The village is home to Lake in the Hills Airport which is designated as a FAA reliever airport for Chicago O'Hare. Some other travel related businesses in the area include Northern Illinois Flight Center and American Airlines. While in the Lake in the Hills area, one of the best places to visit is Chicago's Historic Gold Coast District.
