Macomb is a part of the McDonough County region/metro area of Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the city had a population of 21,659 and it has a land area of about 9.9 square miles. Macomb was founded in 1829 primarily be land grants given to veterans from the War of 1812. Macomb is often known as the location of the St. Louis Ram's training camp from 1996-2004.
