About Clay City

Clay City is a city situated in central Kentucky and sits in the county of Powell. It has a small population of less than 2,000 people. The area was first settled in the late 1700’s by Stephen Collins who stayed because the amount of pyrite that could be mined there. There was much of this substance in the area because it was right at the bottom of the Allegheny Mountains. Much of Clay City’s business is run on the deposits that are found in the mountains, especially when Red River Iron Works began mining iron in the nineteenth century. Some of the best things to do in the city are to visit Furnace Mountain which is complete with a Korean Zen Buddhist Temple, do 18 holes on the Meadows or Beechfork Golf Courses, take a look through history at the Red River Museum, take in a concert at the Meadowgreen Music Hall or watch the cars at Mountain Park Dragway. Some of the best places to eat in the area are Kathy’s Country Kitchen and Papa’s Real Pizza, both of which offer authentic and delicious menus. Clay City participates in the Powell County School system which incorporates Clay City and Stanton Elementary, Powell Co. Middle School and other high schools in the area.
